ported through monthly Saturday meetings. Plans will be made soon for future sessions of Heyer Voices and organizers are hopeful current participants may return as future mentors. For more information, please email info@heyervoices.org.

The first gathering of “Heyer Voices,” a collaborative program between the Heather Heyer Foundation and The Sum, two local non-profits with aligned missions, came together this past weekend in downtown Charlottesville. Fourteen area juniors and seniors took part. Kibiriti Majuto, a graduate of Charlottesville High School and one of the mentors, said, “This weekend students from across the Charlottesville area were able to connect together, explore ideas and feelings, and formulate ideas for projects on variety of issues related to race and our many other rich differences. It was an opportunity for them to process how to elevate themselves and the voices of other young people.” Susan Bro, mother of Heather Heyer, added, “We couldn’t have asked for a more amazing group of motivated teens and mentors. What a fantastic opening weekend! They have definite ideas about what they want to see in the world.” For an evening and half a day, the group examined individual styles of communication along with internal work on personal biases. The remainder of the second day, they brainstormed ideas and created their own projects to create positive, non-violent social change. Participants were encouraged in sustainable activism, allowing them to work it into already busy lives, aligned with their natural talents and interests. The projects will be implemented over the fall semester and will be sup-

St. Anne’s-Belfield School Grades 6 – 8 math teachers Mr. Mark Gearhart, Ms. Julia Robbins, and Mr. Terry Lippmann have all made changes to how and what they grade. In addition to providing students the possibility of more personalized pacing this approach has increased the clarity of content mastery and mathematical ability in their grades. “I’ve moved away from grading behaviors and towards grading content mastery,” explained Robbins. “This system is supposed to be more bias-resistant, fairer, and more motivational to the students.” Robbins began examining her grading processes after reading Joe Feldman’s Grading for Equity. Often a system such as this is known as “standards-based grading.” The book inspired her to make notable changes, for example no longer attaching a grade to behaviors such as completing homework (now called “practice”) and class participation. Instead she has created a model in which content mastery is key, and so now assesses students on a 5 – 10 scale that allows them the chance to re-take assessments after a reflection period, and encourages them to return to material throughout the year rather than pacing the class as a whole. “When kids take a quiz now, even if they get every question wrong, I still assign a five,” says Robbins. “This is because they’ve certainly learned something. They may not be able to do the problems that I’m giving them yet, but I don’t want to disregard all the work that they’ve done to get to where they are right now. Not to mention giving a kid a zero on a quiz is really de-motivating, and it’s really hard to overcome . . . when you factor in a zero to an average there’s not going to be much coming back from that. So, why don’t we make it possible for them to ‘stay in the game’ longer?”

In sixth grade, the last year of Singapore Math in the K – 6 math curriculum, Gearhart found that the principles of Grading for Equity were a natural fit to areas he had found challenging in grading in the past. “Two areas of grading that I’ve always struggled with were class participation, which was always subjective, and collaborative project work,” he said. “After reading Grading for Equity I found myself agreeing with the philosophy, and so I got rid of class participation, I got rid of grading collaborative projects, and I got rid of homework as well. I moved to ‘trackers,’ for example notes about the amount of homework students did. “Later in the year after an assessment they’ll be able to look at how they did and then go back and see how much homework they completed and we can have a conversation about the relationship and the correlation rather than it being a part of their mathematical ability grade.” In eighth grade, Lippmann is now teaching those students who were in Robbins’ class last year and so are familiar with the move away from grading behaviors and towards grading content mastery. “We have very similar ways of scoring to communicate how much a student has mastered,” explained Lippmann of the Grades 6 – 8 teachers. “We work with ‘beginning,’ ‘exploring,’ ‘proficient,’ ‘advanced,’ and ‘mastery.’ We don’t allow students to be satisfied with less than ‘proficient,’ we don’t want them to settle like that. So proficient is our minimum for students to move on, but they are encouraged to reflect and retake and go further in terms of the standards-based assessments if they want to.” For Lippmann, allowing assessment re-takes has been a part of his classroom grading for a number of years but it was after reading Grading for Equity that he saw clearly how grading behaviors was

against his mathematical education philosophy. “The grade on a report card should reflect what a student knows in math, not how well they sit in a classroom or how much homework they do,” he said. Students Angel Hasley ’24 and Lellie King ’24 are both in Lippmann’s eighth grade math class and are familiar with the philosophy of Grading for Equity from Robbins’ seventh grade class. “The reflections were great!” said Hasley. “If we got something wrong on a quiz we’d write about why we got it wrong and we’d make up our own problem that was similar to the problem we got wrong and then we’d solve it ourselves . . . she gave us the opportunity, we just had to take it.” King took advantage of these opportunities knowing that concepts and skills were building blocks, and that incomplete mastery in one area might well lead to incomplete mastery in others. “I felt like if I got below an eight on a quiz that I needed to retake it until I got to a nine or ten,” she explained. “I just felt like the information was important, like later on I wouldn’t understand things as well if I just let one quiz slide. I felt like if I went back and learned the information again then I would understand what we learn later much better because later units would involve the things that I was being quizzed on all along.” As Hasley and King both experienced, standards-based grading affords students the opportunity to go back and improve on past content as their mastery of that content grows. Given the cumulative nature of math, consistent building on fundamental skills is imperative. Gearhart, Robbins, and Lippmann agree, standards-based grading or grading for equity promotes just that. St. Anne’s-Belfield School is a co-educational Pre-School – Grade 12 day school of nearly 900 students, with an international boarding program in Grades 9 - 12. It holds as its core purpose to inspire and prepare the next generation of exemplary citizens and visionary leaders, and recognizes six core values: integrity, curiosity, diversity, creativity, agency, and impact. Fourteen countries are represented in the student body, with 41 percent of students receiving financial aid. More information may be found at www. stab.org.

that buyers prefer “flexibility in design,” so they can use their space to accommodate changing needs. Some agents report that the breakfast room is another space that may be disappearing as some families opt for an extended kitchen island with a seating area instead. Aging in place features are popular and appeal as well to parents juggling strollers, toddlers and groceries, or individuals using a walker as they recover from knee replacement surgery or a skiing mishap. “We are seeing an increase in our main level living styles that offer Easy Living elements for aging in place such stepless entries, larger walkways, functional floor plans, and an owners suite and guest suite on the entry level of the home. Contemporary exterior designs are popular too,” explains Andrea Akers, Sales Manager for Southern Development Homes.

Enjoy the Outdoors Spectacular scenery and a relatively mild climate are two big reasons people move to our area. No doubt this is why outdoor living features such as decks, verandas and screened porches continue to be popular new home options. “Outdoor living is a big trend we continue to see grow each year,” says

Low Maintenance More time for outdoor activities, hobbies and other pursuits are big reasons buyers favor low maintenance features when building a new home. “Low maintenance continues to be the name of the game” along with “eco-friendly” features, Akers says, adding “we take pride in our EcoSmart Program delivering energy efficient quality homes with low maintenance backed by solid warranties.” When it comes to flooring, laminate is “still the best low maintenance option with commercially backed warranties, but Coretec, a luxury vinyl flooring, “with its lower price point and variety of incredibly real looking wood choices backed by naturally antimicrobial rubber and cork underlayment,” is increasingly popular as well, Akers says. “Low maintenance exteriors give our home owners more time to enjoy life versus constant upkeep,” says David Boisvert, Sales Manager for Atlantic Builders. He adds that, inside the home, “solid wood is being replaced with laminate and luxury vinyl planks that look like hard wood but hold up much better to scratches and wear.”

Tile is another feature that is low maintenance and can be incorporated into any design. “Have fun with it,” says Pete Sandfort with Sarisand Tile who has a home in the Parade built to showcase “unique and fun uses for tile” all over the house. If you don’t want to build, you can still enjoy low maintenance features by upgrading. Troy Yancey, owner of T.E.A.L Construction and a featured remodeler in this year’s Parade, hears from homeowners who are “too busy to take care of their homes,” and appreciate low maintenance upgrades, such as to exteriors and decks. Yancey is in process of completing a total renovation of a 1910 house and adding a 1,400 square foot addition. See pictures at his Parade page and on his website. While there is a big demand for remodeling services most people don’t know where to start or who to consult, Yancey says, adding that he offers a free consultation to potential clients. This year’s Parade Magazine features Yancey’s company as well as Dovetail Design & Cabinetry, Glass Innovations, Inc., and Sarisand Tile.

Contact info and before and after pictures of various projects can be seen in the Magazine. Townhomes are another way buyers can be free of common home maintenance chores. Atlantic Homes’ Evershire Parade entry located in Waynesboro offers that freedom plus affordability says Bevin Boisvert with Roy Wheeler Realty Co. and Atlantic Homes. The townhome community is an easy commute to Charlottesville with prices starting at $199,900. Home Owner Association fees include maintenance of the lawn, siding and roof. The three-story units include a garage and some great mountain views Boisvert says.

Cutting Edge Design Come to the Parade to “see the new designs, the new products, and the new communities,” as “a lot can change from year to year,” Colvin says. [The Parade is] “a wonderful opportunity for folks that may not normally plan on touring homes to come out and enjoy what is going on in the real estate market and check out the latest designs and finishes,” Akers adds. She is excited about “five new models created by our in-house architectural designer, and we are looking forward to feedback from Parade goers!” Farmhouse styles continue to be

popular. “We’re showing farmhouse elements in many Parade homes this year,” Southmayd says, including features such as “white siding, black windows and shiplap.” “The latest design change for us has been a shift from craftsman style architecture to the modern farmhouse style. As we have introduced these plans into

We are seeing an emphasis on “clean white interiors with wood accents including the use of “reclaimed wood for beams, floors and mantles,” White says. Examples are “tobacco wood hardwood floors, white shiplap and re-

claimed river wood.” While white is still popular, Amy Hart with Dovetail Design is starting to see a move to “more warm woods such as oak and hickory, with grey tones that add warmth and an organic feel.” Some of her clients even tell her they want “anything but white.” The result is designs that she calls “more coura-

geous, with more personality.” Hart has also observed “a huge focus,” on well-engineered, well thought out designs that “tackle multi-purpose needs with one item.” Examples are a sink with a built-in ledge for sponges or a medicine cabinet with backlit mirrors.

such as community meals. The focus on sharing means residents enjoy “a simpler life with less stuff,” explains Peter Lazar the neighborhood’s developer. “Happiness per square foot is what we’re about,” he adds.

Parade Information Start your Parade experience by visiting the mobile friendly Parade website: brhbaparadeofhomes.com where you will find a map and details about each Parade entry grouped by geographic area. Each house has its own page, so visitors can peruse the info and plan a trip that includes homes, neighborhoods and builders of greatest interest. Find hard copies of this year’s Parade of Homes Magazine with maps and information in each Parade home along with details about the design and remodeling entries including photos and contact details. On Friday, October 11 and Sunday, October 13 The Daily Progress will carry a special section on the Parade including a map. Bring a friend and a list of questions and take advantage of this weekend’s final opportunity to talk to REALTORS®, builders and other new home professionals eager to be of service.

Energy Savings Surprisingly low utility bills are a big advantage of a new home. “The overwhelming majority of builders in our marketplace now feature energy efficient construction methods as a core part of their offering,” says Greg Slater, with Nest Realty and Bramante Homes. “Solar is getting some traction,” Guthrie says. While cost is a barrier for some buyers, Ridley explains that solar can make “financial sense,” especially with today’s low interest rates. Emerson Commons, a featured Parade neighborhood, is an “intentional community of private homes clustered around shared space,” and the first all-solar community in the Commonwealth. Homeowners also enjoy shared resources like lawn mowers and a central organic garden.
