NEWS & VIEWS Local Real Estate News CAAR Member Darian Cochran Honored with First 2018 Good Neighbor Award The Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS® (CAAR) has announced that Darian Cochran, principal broker, of Avenue Realty, LLC is the first 2018 Good Neighbor Award recipient. The Good Neighbor Award program highlights local REALTORS® who dedicate significant time and interest to projects that make a lasting impact on our communities. Cochran was nominated by his wife and colleague, Amy Cochran, for his dedication, commitment, and fundraising efforts to Northside Baseball League. In addition to being on the Northside Baseball League Board as the equipment manager, Cochran is also a coach. Cochran created, organized, and advertised a Northside Baseball League home run competition, where every time a player on a Northside team hits a home run, they are featured on the Northside Facebook page. In addition to player recognition, Cochran’s real estate office, Avenue Realty, LLC, donates $50 for every home run hit. “He probably puts in upwards of 100 hours as a volunteer in his board position. The coaching piece, probably over 500 hours,” said President of Northside Baseball League, Alice

Riccabona. “Even kids in the major league - 10, 11, 12-year-old kids - who haven’t been coached by this individual have felt the impact of his giving to the league. He’s really touched everyone in the league.” “Darian has been coaching some of those kids since they were 4 or 5 years old in tee-ball, and now they’re out there hitting home runs for the all-star team. So really, really excited to share this with those families, and the kids, and their parents,” said Amy Cochran of Avenue Realty, LLC. A $500 donation was made to Northside Baseball League in Cochran’s name. Bike & Build Team Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity Team of Young Cyclists Bike Across U.S. to Benefit Affordable Housing Bike & Build is a national nonprofit committed to raising money and awareness for affordable housing. On June 4, their Central United States team pedaled into Charlottesville to build affordable homes with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville at the Lochlyn Hill neighborhood. The team is made up of 24 teammates from ages 18-26. “We’re so excited to have the Bike & Build team back in Charlottesville to work in the Lochlyn Hill neighborhood,” says Kim Purdy, Community Engagement Specialist at Habitat for Humanity who is also an alum of Bike & Build. “Having pedaled across the country with Bike & Build, I know how passionate these riders are about affordable housing. It’s so meaningful to be able to see the varied needs of affordable housing across the country. We’re excited to share how we are building a mixed-income community here in Charlottesville and we’re fortunate to have such a big team visiting us!” The journey began on May 29, when the team reported to Yorktown, VA. Over the next 11 weeks, the Central US team will pedal an average of 66 miles per day to Portland, OR and the Pacific Ocean, arriving on August 12. Along the way, the riders will participate in volunteer build days with 10 different affordable housing organizations like Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville, Rebuilding Together, and small local housing nonprofits to help build affordable homes for families in need. Riders will build in towns like Charlottesville, St. Louis, Boulder, Idaho Falls, and Portland, among others. They will also advocate for the need for

affordable homes for all Americans in the many host communities and passthrough towns along the way. Each member of the team has raised at least $5,000 to support the trip prior to its start. Much of that money is then donated to affordable housing groups, and since 2003 Bike & Build has donated $6.4 million to such organizations nationwide. In total, roughly 180 18-to-26-year-old riders will see and experience first-hand the affordable housing need in this country. In addition to volunteering with construction efforts at affordable housing sites, riders also meet with local officials and community members to discuss affordable housing issues. Riders sleep in local churches, community centers, and schools, and rely on the generosity of hundreds of community members for food, showers, and other necessities. When the trip is complete, many Bike & Builders have gone on to continue their commitment to service through their career choices or further volunteering. Young Charlottesville To Speak Out About Race At #UnmaskingCville On Thursday, June 21, Virginia Humanities will kick off #UnmaskingCville, a three-day series on anti-racism, led by Charlottesville youth and young adults. The series will include three events held June 21-23 at Piedmont Virginia Community College. Inspired by poet Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “We Wear The Mask,” the Unmasking series first launched in Richmond in the winter of 2016. “#UnmaskingRVA was unlike any public conversation on race I had ever seen,” says Virginia Humanities director of African American Programs Justin Reid. “It was Black millennial- and woman-driven, and just felt fresh and contemporary and youthful.” After #UnmaskingRVA, Reid immediately solicited the help of independent journalist and Central Virginia native Samantha Willis, the co-creator of Unmasking, to bring it to Charlottesville. The three-day #UnmaskingCville experience will offer a safe space for candid, solution-centered, youth- and young-adult-ed dialogue about race and racism. “What makes UnmaskingCville unique is that it is led entirely by local youth and young adults,” says Reid. “UnmaskingCville is not just talk. By the end of the series, participants will feel more empowered and be better equipped to dismantle racism and promote equity and inclusion in the Charlottesville community and beyond.” During Part I: Connect + Film on Thursday, June 21, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., participants will meet, talk, and connect over dinner. They’ll also attend a film screening curated by Enjoli Moon, founder of the Afrikana Independent Film Festival and assistant film curator at VCU’s Institute for Contemporary Art. Small group conversation and a talkback session will follow the film. On Friday, June 22, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Part II: Backstory Breakdown will be led by a diverse panel of young, changemaking, Charlottesville natives. They’ll explore how race and racism have shaped the City's past, impact its present reality, and influence its future. Panelists include:

• Niya Bates, public historian of slavery & African American life at Monticello • Zyahna Bryant, student activist, co-founder & chair of the Charlottesville High School Black Student Union • Nikuyah Walker, mayor of Charlottesville • Jordy Yager, independent journalist Backstory Breakdown will be livestreamed at facebook.com/VirginiaHumanities. During the livestream, questions can be tweeted using the hashtag #UnmaskingCville,or posted to the Virginia Humanities Facebook page. The series concludes Saturday, June 23, from 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m., with Part III: Learning in Action. Social justice and inclusion educator Yolanda Avent will facilitate a workshop exploring impactful ways to confront racism and how to self-identify biases. Participants will also receive resources from organizations committed to growing Charlottesville into a more inclusive community. This program is made possible through the generous support of Mel-

anie Biermann and Marty Younker. Each year, the Virginia Festival of the Book invites submissions of original, published books of fiction (all genres), nonfiction, poetry, and children’s and young adult literature. Writers, illustrators, and other publishing professionals with a new book published in 2018 or early 2019 are encouraged to submit their books for consideration. ing that “several of our new home owners selected Spring Creek based solely on the course.” The market is picking up in Wintergreen communities, but it’s not too late to get a good deal there, Marianella offered. He explained that Stoney Creek residents are just 30 minutes away from Charlottesville and have an easy commute. The location also works well for two career couples with one spouse working elsewhere such as Lynchburg or Waynesboro. One challenge for home sellers in golf communities is that relatively high prices put them in direct competition with new construction, Guthrie said. For many buyers building a home designed to their exact specifications is a great option. However, builders are very busy right now, some booked well into 2019. Guthrie believes the long wait for new homes will benefit sellers of existing houses as not everyone has the time or the patience to wait so long before they move in.

Golf Courses Add Value For golfers the joys of living near their favorite course are obvious, but there are plenty of other reasons to move into a golf community. One is the economic benefit since golf courses can raise property values even for homes adjacent to the community. A study by researchers at Florida Atlantic University (based on a review of 10,000 real estate transactions in South Florida) found that “having a property adjacent to a golf course adds between 8 percent and 12 percent to property values on average.” Guthrie observed that a well kept golf course will help maintain subdivision values, benefitting everyone who lives in a community. Everyone can appreciate the additional common ground space of a course, he continued, since it permits more and better views of the mountains compared to neighborhoods where views may be blocked by other houses.

Whether they’re out on the field or out $50 for the tickets, the average Charlottesvillian is somewhere on the continuum from sports fan to sports fanatic—maybe the first from April through August and the second from September through March while the UVA football and basketball seasons are in progress. We love our “Hoos”/”Cavs”/Cavaliers, and we love getting out there and playing ourselves, whether we’re dreaming of future glory, or reliving past glories and trying to stay in shape.

University of Virginia UVA teams are probably the most talked about—and the most agreed on— subjects in town. The University offers 12 sports for men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, squash, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and wrestling. It offers 13 for women: basketball, cross-country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, squash, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

UVA Basketball Two-time National Coach of the Year, Tony Bennett came to UVA from Washington State in 2009 and revitalized the men’s basketball program with his “five pillars”—humility, passion, unity, servanthood, and thankfulness. Bennett’s teams are known for their strong defense. In 2017-18 that defense led them to 17 ACC conference wins—a conference

record—and into the Sweet Sixteen as the number one seed before suffering a heartbreaking loss to UMBC. With their cheaper ticket prices, the women’s games are popular with families—but no less exciting. Playing for beloved coach Debbie Ryan from 1977 through 2011, the UVA women’s basketball team developed its own loyal and enthusiastic fan base. Joanne Boyle followed Ryan as coach and kept interest high winning six out of her seven years in the job. Tina Thompson, former associate head coach at Texas, takes over for the 2018-19 season.

Under the leadership of third-year coach Bronco Mendenhal, the Cavaliers open their season at home in Scott Stadium against the University of Richmond Spiders on Saturday, September 1. They continue “the South’s oldest Rivalry” (dating back to 1892) against North Carolina at Scott Stadium on October 27. They close out the 2018 season and take on their biggest rival, Virginia Tech, for the 100th time on November 23 in Blacksburg. UVA first played Tech in 1895 and has done so annually since 1970. Each year’s winner takes possession of the four-foot-high, marble and cherry wood trophy known as the Commonwealth Cup.

UVA Baseball The UVA Cavaliers baseball team won its first NCAA National Championship in 2015 under five-time ACC Coach of the Year and three-time national coach of the year Brian O’Connor, now in his 15th season as head coach. UVA has ranked among the top 40 in the nation in total home and average home attendance since O’Connor took over in 2003, and has been in the top 20 nationally in attendance in each of the last eight seasons, prompting the University to undertake several expansions of Davenport Field. Next year fans look forward to the arrival of a potential first-round Major League Baseball draft pick, Boston high school right-hander, Mike Vasil. Vasil is currently listed at No. 37 among the top 500 likely picks, but will play for the Cavs first.

Recreational Sports While we root for the Cavs around here, we have numerous options for playing (and socializing) ourselves. The Jefferson Swim League sponsors 18 swim teams for children. The Cavalier Wrestling Club operates a Scholastic Program for kids grades K-12, and a USA Wrestling Regional Olympic Training Center (RTC) brings children together with UVA and Olympic-level athletes for wrestling tips and life lessons. The Seminole Lacrosse League is dedicated to giving local kids the chance to play lacrosse at the high school level. Pickleball It’s not quite tennis, and it’s not badminton, and it’s not ping pong either, but pickleball, which has elements of all three, is the country’s most popular new sport. The game is played by either two or four players using paddles to hit a perforated ball like a Wiffle Ball over a net on a court the size of a badminton court. The game’s rules are similar to those in tennis. Local pickleball enthusiasts play at the YMCA, Boar’s Head Sports Club, the Senior Center and the Key Rec Center.

Soccer The Soccer Organization of Charlottesville/Albemarle (SOCA) began organizing games for kids in 1982. Today it serves over 6,000 local players, offering men’s, women’s and “co-recreational” (both genders) matches. Kids play year round, starting at age five in the Hot Shots program and continuing on through the Elite travel program for ages 13-19. Many participate in camps and clinics and take advantage of individual or small group training. Not only are local teams and recreational sports leagues hugely popular, but they give kids and adults of all neighborhoods and backgrounds the opportunity to meet, mingle and make friends. Like many a newcomer, Day had a hard time meeting people at first. Like the professional problem-solver (computer programmer) he is, he decided to found a sports league. The club has 4,500 members and offers the chance to play basketball (men’s and co-ed), flipcup, cornhole, co-ed kickball, sand volleyball, soccer and flag football. “We’re happy to provide an outlet for recreational players to go out and get active,” Day says. “People are really friendly, you just need that icebreaker. Being on a sports team with 10 or 15 other people is a great way to start.” Fall registration for Charlottesville Sports and Social Club opens in July. The league also sponsors happy hour get-togethers and Foxfield outings.
