NEWS & VIEWS CAAR Celebrates Newest Professional Honor Society Inductees Professionalism in the local real estate community has never been stronger, as evident by the turnout at the 2012 CAAR Honor Society celebration on Tuesday, March 19 at Farmington Country Club. A long-running awards program at the state level, a total of 152 REALTORS® have achieved this pinnacle recognition

since it was implemented at CAAR in 1996. Being a member of the honor society signifies a deep commitment to industry standards of excellence. The selection process each year relies on three core areas of participation in: real estate-related educational programs and events; various leadership and/or

volunteer roles in the Association and/ or the community; and encouraging and/or achieving sales volume. The 2012 class marks the 17th year of honor society for nine CAAR members and the first year for five members. “It is fantastic that so many of our members go the extra distance to be

involved in activities that improve their professionalism,” Denise Ramey, GRI, CAAR president and director of relocation at Roy Wheeler Realty, said. “It also means a lot that their peers attend these events to cheer them on.” Some 125 CAAR members showed their support at the event.

Last Tuesday’s event was the perfect venue to pay tribute to an outstanding community volunteer among the REALTOR® ranks. The first CAAR Good Neighbor Award was bestowed on Bill Howard (pictured above), principal broker at Real Estate IIICommercial Properties, for his dedication to the Alzheimer’s Association Central and Western Virginia. What began as an effort to honor the memory of Howard’s father has grown into a highly anticipated annual community event to raise awareness of the disease that is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. ot every little arts organization in a small Southern city would have the guts to launch a building campaign a couple of months after 9/11. Some might say the move was a little too…dramatic. But the folks at Live Arts knew Charlottesville, and Charlottesville knew it wanted the kind of provocative, communitydriven theater experience the scrappy little downtown company in the Old Michie Building had provided since 1990. Just two years later the new, titanium-clad structure opened on Water Street with a theatrical adaptation of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. An audience of 13,500 saw Live Arts productions during its 2011-2012 season. They saw work intended to entertain, but also to challenge and, most of all, as artistic director Julie Hamberg paraphrases the group’s mission statement, “to forge community and theater. Everything that Live Arts has done is risky and bold and starts conversations,” Hamberg says. “That’s what I believe theater should be. It should always be a conversation between the community and the theater.”That means summer camp education programs for kids, a monthly reader’s circle, and initiatives to develop new work and to engage people from across the city’s ethnic spectrum. Most of all it means a six-

show subscription series heavy on the cultural commentary, plus a big, familyfriendly summer musical where teens work alongside adults. “We pride ourselves on being an amateur theater with incredibly high production values,” says Executive Director Matt Joslyn. He means “amateur” as in “volunteer,” but also in the original Latin (amator) sense, i.e. lover. Some 250 lovers of theater help Live Arts put on plays these days, hammering sets, sewing buttons, running the lights and sound boards – and acting onstage. What Joslyn calls the company’s “interesting, rich and bizarre history” began in 1989 when a group of “big personalities in town” decided Charlottesville needed a theater company, and approached local real estate partners Gabe Silverman and Allan Cadjene, owners of the Old Michie building on Market Street. The troupe they founded opened in September of 1990 with Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1944 existentialist play No Exit. “In the early days, they would do plays on Friday nights, take the set down, bring out the DJ booth, and have big huge acid house parties, and then put the set back up the next morning, do a play the next night, take the set down and do big acid house parties. That’s how it began. They were financing the theater with the revenues of the acid house party. Live Arts became this maybe under-

Live Arts Executive Director Matt Joslyn ground, certainly fringe company that did some really funky, challenging work.” Joslyn believes Live Arts played a large role in the Downtown Mall’s transformation from a stretch of blocks mostly shuttered at nightfall to the bustling town center synonymous with local nightlife today. The company hired its first full-time staff member, artistic director John Gibson, in 1993. By 1999 it was dreaming about all the great things it could spend the rent money on if it had its own home. “On a wing and a prayer this little fledgling company decided

‘hey, we’re going to build a building,’ Joslyn says, marveling that they pulled it off. The 27,000+ square foot, three-story Center for Contemporary Arts on Water Street, designed by local architectural firm Bushman Dreyfus, gave Live Arts two theaters—the 200-seat Downstage (now the Gibson) and the 70-seat black box Upstage—plus two rehearsal studios, costume and scenery shops, offices, and costume and props storage areas. They share the building with two other prominent and adventurous Charlottesville arts groups: Lighthouse Studio, a film and production company for students, and Second Street Gallery, a contemporary art gallery. “From 2006-2010 the company had some real identity crises and financial crises” related to the economy, Joslyn notes. Attendance and donations declined dramatically in 2008 and 2009. But the company sold 13,500 tickets for its 2011-2012 season, and saw a 35 percent increase in subscribers from 2011-2012 to 2012-2013. Thanks to a donor base of roughly 1000 people, it has enjoyed three record-breaking fundraising years in a row. What drew an artistic director of Hamberg’s caliber to the company in the fall of 2011 is that ambitious, inclusive mission statement, Forging Theater LIVE ARTS continued on pg. 18

It fulfills the whole mission.” Osage will be directed by Fran Smith, one of the company’s founders and its first artistic director, who has directed a fifth of the shows it’s produced. Joslyn promises a cast with “a lot of faces Charlottesville audiences will know.” Osage will be presented in the Gibson Theater May 17 – June 8, 2013. Come July, the tone turns lighter. “What we love about our summer program is that we choose a musical that features young people, and we fill out roles with adults,” Joslyn says. In summers past, audiences have been treated to Footloose, Zombie Prom, Thirteen, and Hairspray, the biggest seller so far. This year’s Legally Blonde, with music and lyrics by Nell Benjamin and Laurence O’Keefe, and a book by Heather Hach, centers on the comic adventures of Elle Woods, a perennially perky, preferably pampered heroine partial to pink apparel. “I’m very psyched that we’re the first theater in the area to be doing it,” Joslyn says, predicting a turnout of “hundreds and hundreds” for the auditions, including “probably 50 different Elle Woods’ that are going to bleach their hair blonde’.” Hamberg, for her part, is more concerned about the pool of canine actors than the pool of potential Elles. “We have both the singing and dancing talent to do a great job,” she says. “One of the beautiful things about Charlottesville is that you can do a big, splashy musical, and do it really well.” Whether or not, absent money for a trainer, she can risk using a live dog, she hasn’t decided. An award-winning director, producer, and arts-manager who has staged more than 75 new plays, Hamberg worked in New York City for 18 years and most recently served as Interim Director for Southern Rep, a major regional theater in New Orleans. “Every decision we make, we put that through the prism of the mission statement,” Hamberg says. “When I’m choosing the season, it’s gotta fit both the community of volunteers as well as the community audiences. We have volunteer actors, designers, and directors. Will it be good and fun for them to work on, and for our audiences? It’s always about how the community and the theater drama part will go together. Of the company’s daring history, she says, “it is just completely my kind of theater. Live Arts has done work that many regional theaters would not do because it was too out there. Because Charlottesville is a ready, accepting, challenging place, there’s an audience for it, and that made me really excited.” When Joslyn and Hamberg asked Live Arts fans what they wanted to see on stage next, August: Osage County came up over and over. Originally staged by Chicago’s renowned Steppenwolf Theatre, which took it to Broadway, it’s an epic drama about a dysfunctional American family set in Osage County, Oklahoma, that won playwright Tracy Letts the 2008 Pulitzer Prize. A large work with many challenging roles, Osage “takes on big themes of family and personal responsibility and power,” Hamberg says, “but the biggest thing about it is that it is really funny as well as clashing against emotion. If summer at Live Arts is geared towards families, the occasional Late Night performances offer, in Hamberg’s words, “a kind wacked-out cabaret for adults” where anybody with an idea for a short performance—song, skit, belly dance, whatever—can take the stage. The final Late Night of the season will be on June 15th. Cover is $10, drinks are cheap. Late Night lends itself to short-form invention. The Foundry, New Works on Fire is for workshop versions of longer material. “Anyone in the world can apply and say I’d like to develop a piece,” Joslyn says. “We give you $100 and a room. And an audience, and you can have your play heard.” For Hamberg “one of the engines of theater is not only looking at pieces that are part of the theater canon, but also creating new pieces talking about things that are happening right now. That’s what the Foundry is about.” The next Foundry presentation is Peter Gunter’s Jefferson Slept Here, on April 15. Melanin is a series of staged readings designed to attract more artists and audiences of color. Next up is Love’s the Thang, by Charlottesville’s own Clinton Johnston, a playwright, director, actor, theater scholar and general fixture

on the Virginia theater scene. A date has yet to be fixed. Even theater lovers sometimes find the first reading of a play hard going. It’s not always easy to establish and keep straight each character’s voice and personality. Carol Pedersen is a longtime dramaturge – which is to say she’s made a career of directing and coaching actors, amateur and professional—and she leads the Live Arts Reader’s Circle. The Circle, which is free and open to the public, meets one Sunday afternoon a month to read plays and discuss them. It will read David LinsdayAbaire’s Good People on April 21. Playwrights Lab is a reader’s circle for aspiring playwrights. It meets the first and third Mondays of each month. Actor and director Bree Luck oversees a diverse array of education programs for kids and adults that drew more than 600 participants last year. The Live Arts Teen Theater Ensemble (LATTE) puts on two “youth-centric” productions a year, along with more than 60 classes, workshops, and camps. The Page to Stage camp puts on a one-act play in five days. Playmakers Intensive is a two-week camp in which kids and teens write, design, build, and perform their own original pieces. Two-week Musical Theater Intensives teach singing, Broadway-style

We dance together; that’s the spirit of Live Arts.” Hamberg and Joslyn believe Charlottesville has the talent for a volunteer theater – an amateur theater—capable of producing at least one show a year that could play the hippest, most creative stages in the country, “a show,” Joslyn says, “that if you put it Off-Broadway, would sell. There’s not a tree or plant that isn’t conducive to wildlife.” Sandy created what experts call a “beneficial landscape.” While lawns are notoriously cost intensive in terms of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, water and labor, a beneficial landscape takes care of itself for the most part because it recreates the local native ecosystem with native plants that are likely to grow well without a lot of care. Maintaining a wild flower patch, for example, costs far less than the same

ackyard habitats are just as important as the curb appeal of a home,” declares self-described “green” person Sara Greenfield, owner of Charlottesville Fine Properties. “They provide us space for contemplation and grounding that our homes and computers cannot give us.” Greenfield, who holds a B.S. in Outdoor Education, continues, “Creating an outdoor habitat is easy and rewarding. It adds value to most of the homes I have ever sold.” “Anyone can develop a habitat,” agrees David Mizejewski, a Naturalist with the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), which sponsors a Certified Wildlife Habitat program. “People with 50 acres, people with a little postage stamp—we even have one in Manhattan—there’s always some wildlife.” Backyard visitors can include birds, bats, butterflies and other insects, frogs, toads, lizards, and mammals. “Well-managed backyard habitats can save energy, protect the soil and improve water and air quality,” notes Dr. Greg Eaton, Director of the Claytor Nature Study Center at Lynchburg College, in a Virginia Cooperative Extension Service publication that he co-authored. He explains that plants improve air quality and anchor soil in place reducing sediments and contaminants that enter streams and rivers. In addition, well-placed trees shade homes in summer and reduce winter heat loss. While it’s certainly not necessary to have a habitat officially recognized, it adds personality and panache to

any property. For certification, the NWF has three basic requirements: water (bird baths, ponds, streams), shelter (evergreens, shrubbery, woodpiles, bird houses), and food sources (feeders, fruiting and flowering plants and trees.) Think Globally, Act Locally is a motto favored by NWF’s Mizejewski. “You don’t get much more local than your own backyard,” he says, “and creating natural landscape saves time, money and labor in the long run.” When “Sandy,” who prefers not to give her actual name, and her husband moved into their home 11 years ago, there were no mature trees and minimal landscaping. “There was no place for birds to come,” she recalls. She spent many hours developing a Certified Habitat, shifting rocks in the yard to create pathways and a small rock garden. She also built a small pond and populated it with tadpoles from a nearby creek. Thrift shops
