Senior Center Celebrates Purchase of Property for Future Site at Belvedere Senior Center supporters gathered on October 9 at the site of the organization’s future home in the Belvedere neighborhood. Generous gifts, pledges, and matching gifts from individuals, businesses, and organizations enabled the Center, which has never received government funding and operates on a self-supporting, nonprofit business model—to secure the $2.4 property. This purchase is the first step toward building a transformational center designed to meet one of the major public health challenges facing communities across the country. In the Charlottesville area, the senior population is projected to double,

is special in Virginia, but the time of year everyone covets is the fall. With over 15 million acres of foliage, 2,500 miles of scenic drives, fall weather that’s both crisp and gentle—all within a day’s drive or less for 60 percent of the U.s. population—it’s no wonder that Virginia is a popular autumn destination. While there are many views worth noting, some of the most spectacular are along the appalachian Trail, the shenandoah national Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the skyline Drive. Virginia is home to one fourth (544 miles) of the appalachian Trail—more than any other state. one hundred and one of those miles lie in shenandoah national Park and skyline Drive. The central portion of the appalachian Trail follows the Blue Ridge Parkway to Roanoke. Key sites along the way include George Washington and Jefferson national Forest in Bed-

ford count y. Pe a k s of otter in Bedford county has the Peaks of otter Lodge and plenty of spectacular scenery. The southern portion of the appalachian Trail travels westerly through the George Washington and Jefferson national Forest. Key sites include Big Walker Lookout, a 100-foot tower to view scenery; Mount Rogers national Recreation area offering many campgrounds; Mount Rogers, the highest peak in Virginia; and the Mount Rogers scenic Byway. a gradual change in foliage conditions can be seen in the western part of the state, generally at higher elevations, with a lower percentage of fall color at the lower elevations. Patchy color changes exist among tree species such as poplars, sweet gum, dogwood and maple. at this time, peak colors are expected in the mountains during mid

Shenandoah National Park shenandoah national Park, considered one of the most beautiful places in the world, has 500 miles of trails, including 100 miles of the ap-

palachian Trail. The Park covers the crest of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains for over 75 miles. Park Ranger programs are both educational and entertaining. For those who want to spend the night, camping is available. Modern facilities at skyland Resort and Big Meadows Lodge fill the needs of visitors who don’t want to rough it. Full-service restaurants are at skyland and Big Meadows plus there are “waysides” with lighter food. Due to the park’s size and its varying degrees of elevations, the national Park service says it is impossible to pick a “peak date” for the entire park. Based on past years, however, the colors of fall are predictably at their most brilliant between the 2nd and 3rd weeks of october.

Skyline Drive The skyline Drive is a national scenic Byway that runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, starting in the north of the shenandoah Valley at Front Royal to Waynesboro, where it meets the Blue Ridge Parkway. over two million people visit the skyline Drive each year. since fall is the most popular time to travel, expect quite a bit of company on the highway. If you’re in a hurry, the skyline Drive is not for you as the speed limit is only 35mph and is strictly enforced. Expect a non-stop drive to last at least three hours on a clear day. Traveling from one of the four entrances to the next exit takes about an hour, so plan on doing as many as your schedule allows. If you plan on taking photos or just want to get out and stretch your legs, there are 75 overlooks on to the Blue Ridge where you can take in the beauty of colorful forests, farmlands and orchards on either side. Most Parkway facilities are “Wheelchair Useable.” Some facilities have minor slope and/or structural barriers. Gasoline is not available on the Parkway, but is available not far off the Parkway at many highway intersections Rangers and volunteers present a variety of interpretive programs through October. These are given on weekends and occasionally on weekdays. Activities include campfire talks, music and history demonstrations, nature walks and slide presentations. Schedules are posted at visitor centers, campground entrances and Parkway concessions. Something else to consider is that Virginia is the only state through which both national bicycle routes, U.S. 1 and U.S. 76, pass. There are 838 miles of the two routes in Virginia, making it one of the favorite destinations of bicyclists.

The entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway begins at Rockfish Gap and follows a similar path as Skyline Drive along ridge tops. The Parkway was conceived and designed as a scenic motor road and conservator of the natural and historical treasures of the Blue Ridge. Today, it is the most visited site in the National Park system. Like the Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway was built in the 1930s in the midst of the Depression as a public works project. It took more than a half-century to complete and became the nation’s first and longest rural parkway, connecting Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. Known as “America’s Favorite Drive” the Blue Ridge Parkway winds through 29 counties and 469 miles of mountain meadows with endless vistas of mountains and valleys. There is no end to the fascination the Parkway provides, for it encompasses some of the oldest settlements of both pre-historic and early European settlement. For visitors with a yen for history, overlook signs trace much of the history of Appalachian culture, as do visitor center exhibits, restored historic structures, and developed areas, all of which reveal points of particular interest. The Blue Ridge Parkway is very much a “drive awhile and stop awhile” experience. The Parkway was designed for leisurely motoring, so speed limits do not exceed 45mph. Visitors are encouraged to take their time to enjoy the area’s incomparable beauty. The Parkway incorporates several recreation areas, some exceeding 6,000 acres. At the entrance to each of the recreational areas along the Parkway, you will find a large sign bearing the Parkway emblem. These areas have visitor centers, campgrounds, picnic areas, trails and, in many instances, concessionaire-operated lodges, restaurants, and other facilities. Unless otherwise posted, parking is permitted along road shoulders. Short trails offer the chance to get away from the road and see the Blue Ridge without the hindrance of an automobile window. This can be very rewarding, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Longer trails are also available for the more adventurous. Interpretive signs carrying the squirrel gun and powder horn symbol are at many overlooks and historic sites along the parkway, as are numbered mileposts. The zero milepost marker is at Rockfish Gap, immediately south of Shenandoah National Park, and each mile is numbered pro-
