re_thinking heraklion city Heraklion / Crete / Greece Diploma / Thesis 2010_11 [individual] supervisor:

Dr. Sokratis Stratis stratiss@ucy.ac.cy

The city of Heraklion follows a mode of development that meets the character of a capital. Robust growth, increased mobility, plurality of uses and large scale infrastructure forms the backdrop. The existing infrastructure of the city (Venetian walls, airport, port, highway, urban centers) and combined with topography (river, topography) over time to form.

dominated identities

This image is not based on the realization of a master plan which could organize and guide the development, but uncontrollable embolden a non-functional adjacencies and adverse coexisting uses. As a result was the discontinuity in the urban fabric characterized by fragmented functions and programs of the city.

interstitial space

Realizing the shortcomings through the real problems it is necessary to study the feasibility of the permeability of the limits. The immediate objective of this study is to achieve balance in the city and the urban functionality.

Methodology (tools): study of conditions and actions arising in the city either by official authorities or through spontaneous ownership. Fragmented analysis of Heraklion city through the observation of these statements and redefinition of this knowledge as the basis upon which programmatic urban uses may be exhausted by giving a new character to the city. The “observation of the city and the conclusions that arise from the methodology used applied in three different areas that were selected based on specific characteristics. These are the linearity, traffic flow and translocality. The specific areas penetrate residential environment where there is coexistence and interaction. Moreover, they are strong limits of the city and despite the diversity of their character approached as "ways of mobility and use.

The intention of this intervention is to eliminate and in some cases transmittance of the strong limits -in this case- the highway. This is achieved by concentrating uses on the borders thus breaking the “negative flow” allowing a duplication, coexistence and interaction between the environments of the area. Is applied a kind of “transformer” that filters the flow of uses in the area. Interventions related to the study of accessibility as a configuration of urbanization and in combination with the topography shape of the surrounding nature........ ................................... The character of each intervention operates according to four topologies: in regard of water, vegetation, land subsidence and movement. Independently or combined topologies allow access between environments, creating a single "platform" consisting of different conditions and uses.

The intention was to manage build program and open space in order to place public uses and activities. These can be characterized as both; educational and entertaining and at the same time are coexisting with more private uses of the program. Despite the introverted character of high buildings that surround the site, our goal was to create a distinctive architectural design that combines and highlights the natural elements such as lighting, ventilation and vegetation through a contemporary technological approach...................................... These led to design an open, welcoming ground floor, beneath a light and airy shell which leaves the external environment to penetrate the interior, while controls and regulates the indoor climate conditions in order to create a microclimate.

The facades of the building are determined by the structural system of the shell which is composed by a repeating node that forms a diagonal grid with ellipsoidal shape and diamond openings. The static system consists of hollow beams, posts and cables that create a trellis. The filling of the external shell come along the structural system and is composing of double glazing with a triangular geometry. The glazing shell has a unique technology identity; is an interactive surface which is shading the space bellow according to the temperature.

The purpose of this design studio was to experiment with the concept of private and public space and their coexistence. Initially, the experiment took place in the city of Nicosia, where obtained some conclusions and relationships of this coexistence. Then, the study focused on the life and the work space of a traditional tailor in the city who is at the same time a community council of a neighborhood. The aim was to gather information and create a programmatic of the proposing residence. Site of intervention (private space) was chosen an eminently public and "impersonal" space, a hypermarket. As a parasite residence affects and is affected by the environment in an effort harmony. The habits and the role of the tailor continue to take part at the hypermarket.

A biotope visitor gets into a sort of an “incognito” condition when entering into a biotope: his presence should not be detected by the biotope inhabitants. He should not leave “footprints” into the everyday life of the biotope ecosystems. Creating an environmental center in a biotope contains such a paradox: on one hand, the centre should attract visitors for promoting the biotopes assets and on the other hand such attraction endangers the biotope equilibrium. The proposal is formulated around the paradoxical condition of “incognito” by turning the building into a mechanism of observation with introverted and extroverted characteristics. It is organized as part of proposed natural trails (loops) of the biotope. The building becomes in fact, a node to those trails that transverse it, becoming a special event along them.
