STATEMENT

CATHARINA ALIDE MEIER

I grew up and lived in countries with diverse cultures - Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Germany, France, Brazil and the USA. My passion for architecture stems from a quest to understand the complex and changing relationships between the built environment and the people inhabiting it. I have been exposed to contrasting influences my entire life. I have seen people living in abundance, unconstrained and able to access their right to free movement. I have also been confronted with people who experience poverty, and who lack access to basic necessities like shelter, food, water, health care, or education. Many architectural projects consider its inhabitants in a perspective of abundance, rather than scarcity. However, the realities that people in marginalized communities are confronted with daily are also critically important.

I therefore believe that successful design solutions in the areas of social housing, social facilities and basic infrastructure can only occur when architects embrace participative design processes. Architecture is not a notion that can be decided individually and autocratically. In order to induce lasting social change, decision-making processes should take place in an inclusive manner, so as to involve everyone living within the given community. For any kind of architecture project, my priority is to adapt the new design to both the site itself and to the needs of its inhabitants. In this context, my final thesis project for the Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin was both a great challenge and opportunity. Indeed I worked in an informal settlement in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, called the Complexo do Alemão. My project had the support of a local architecture office, Atelier Metropolitano, headed

by the architect Jorge Mário Jaureguí, and my supervisor, Till Gröner, project manager of Green Helmets. The aim of my thesis was to design a solution informed by the research I conducted within two months while working in the community. This demanded direct involvement with the residents and working with the local NGO Community in Action located in the favela. I am convinced that constant communication and the direct exchange of experiences between local communities, design and construction firms will always be an essential part of development projects. In total, I have worked over one and a half years in architecture offices and building sites. I was able to acquire substantial experience working as a student architect and freelancer in various environments, from urban planning to building design, in the following cities and offices: at Stephan Braun-

fels Architekten and at Spreeformat in Berlin, at Planungsbüro Männel in Bad Bentheim, and at n Architects in New York City. I lived in and traveled to many African and European countries, as well as South and North America. I can adapt quickly to unfamiliar environments and have a great interest in discovering new cultures. In the future I want to focus on the development of new designs, which tackle social issues, cultural diversity and sustainability. In my opinion, the success of social architecture should be defined by the impact the project has on an entire community. Inequality, humanitarian crises, and rural depopulation worldwide have led to severe housing problems in developing countries; which demands effective architectural solutions. I would like to contribute to such developmentthrough innovative projects.
