A Message from the JWCPA Artistic Director Let me be the first to wish you all a very Merry Christmas this year from The Jonathan Williams Center for the Performing Arts (JWCPA)! We are a 501 c3 non-profit formed in December, 2016 and we are so excited to bring The Gospel According to Scrooge to Beaumont as the second show in our inaugural year! Our first one, Mahalia, presented in July, 2017 by The Ensemble Theatre of Houston, was a hit! This time we’re producing this show locally in collaboration with Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church and we are so pleased and thankful that you are here to support us! JWCPA is committed to providing performing arts education and performing opportunities for youth, teens, and adults in Southeast Texas and this presentation includes all three groups of actors, singers and technical staff from Beaumont, the surrounding areas, and Houston. The performers you’ll see are your relatives, friends, neighbors, church members or their children who share a desire to use their God-given talents to entertain, delight, and uplift the spirits of us all. We are your community members working to create a legacy of excellence in the performing arts right here in South East Texas! This production, an adaptation of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol, is a personal favorite as I was the musical director for this show 25 years ago in Washington, D.C. and for many years I’ve wanted to direct it and share it with audiences again. After returning in 1992 to Beaumont, my hometown, I’ve directed many students from Martin Elementary, Jewell Houston Academy, and Ozen High School and it gives me a great sense of pride to know that students from each of these three schools are part of this show! All of the volunteer cast and staff have committed numerous hours to rehearsals and organizing and I am so grateful to work with such caring, giving, and talented people! You are probably familiar with the story of Ebenezer Scrooge but we have a different “take” on Scrooge as we see his story as one of conversion and redemption in Christ. Listen to the narrator’s comments and the songs which ring forth a message of Christmas can change even the hardest and heartless of hearts. Thank you to our volunteers and sponsors who helped to make this show a reality! We sincerely appreciate your support of The Gospel According to Scrooge as a special Christmas gift of hope and joy to the Golden Triangle which has experienced months of devastation and recovery. We believe this Christmas is still a celebration of the gift of life! Join us in this celebration!!! Jonathan Williams, Founder and Artistic Director TEAM JWCPA…..Leaving a Legacy

SYNOPSIS ACT I The narrator sets the stage for the classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. As Scrooge is dressing for the day, he refuses a Christmas greeting from his housekeeper and heads out to collect on loans due on Christmas Eve.  On the way to his office, he encounters carolers, singing, “Ring The Bells.”  Once at his desk, Scrooge, bothered by the noise of the carolers, tells his nephew, Bob Cratchit, to send them away.  Cratchit tries to share the meaning of Christmas with his uncle to no avail.  Two solicitors visit Scrooge asking for a donation… Christmas cheer for the poor.  Scrooge inquires about the prisons and workhouses for the poor and dismisses them both, leaves his office, scattering the carolers and sings, “People.”  At 5 pm, Cratchit asks to leave for the day and to have Christmas Day off.  Reluctantly, Scrooge agrees and then closes the shop for the day and heads home.  The Narrator then comments on Scrooge’s relationship with his nephew.   Scrooge returns home; while preparing for bed, he ponders how he treats his nephew.  Scrooge then hears the Voice of God who tells him that he will be visited by 3 angels.  Scrooge falls asleep and is awakened by Angel # 1, who takes him to his past.  They first visit the schoolhouse where he meets Young Belle, his first love.  The school children & teacher sing, “Christmas Is” after which Young Scrooge receives a letter from home which seemingly changes him for life, singing, “From Now On.”   The Angel then takes Young Scrooge to Belle’s street and gives him a letter from Belle.  They then pass Bell’s church where everyone is singing, “What Child is This.” Young Scrooge and Belle meet after service.  They run ahead of the crowd to later attend the Annual Fezziwig Christmas Ball.  Partygoers are greeted, dance and sing, “Celebrate.”  Later, at a park, Young Scrooge and Belle discuss their relationship and his obsession with money.  Young Scrooge and Bell sing of the “The Good Times” and later Young Bell decides to leave him because of his priorities or lack of.  Young Scrooge laments losing Bell and his need for monetary security in the lyrics “I let all the good times slip away”.   INTERMISSION ACT II Narrator sums up Scrooge’s Christmas past in the first act and brings up back to the present at 2 am. Angel #2 transports Scrooge to the present to invisibly visit the Cratchit family. Scrooge watches as they decorate the Christmas tree while Tiny Tim looks on and sings “Someday.” Everyone prays for Tiny Tim and sings, “Yes, I Believe” after which Cratchit comments on Scrooge’s wealth. The family plays the “Yes and No” game about an ugly animal…Scrooge. Narrator feels pity for Scrooge who thought he was regarded as a wealthy businessman but now knows he’s the object of amusement. Angel #3 now appears to take Scrooge to the future where he finds men discussing his death and if anyone will attend the funeral. Then the Angel takes him to hear the pawnbroker negotiating with the laundress and charwoman who stole Scrooge’s clothes and household things and this gang singing, “Birds of a Feather” as Scrooge begs the Angel to show him no more! The Angel then takes him to a graveyard where people are arriving and Scrooge sees the Cratchits. The Angel and Scrooge approach the grave site and see his name on the headstone. Scrooge then sings “This Time.” Now back in his bedroom, Scrooge is on his knees praying for forgiveness and gets up realizing he is still alive. When the housekeeper knocks, he asks what day it is and is told it’s Christmas Day. He gets dressed quickly, opens the window and asks a lad to go buy the big turkey hanging in the meat market. He kisses the housekeeper and gives her a Christmas gift and a raise! He runs into the street praising the Lord and gives a solicitor money for the poor running off singing. Narrator asks, ‘Did you hear him say Merry Christmas?’ Scrooge runs to the church and hears his nephew’s testimony about Tiny Tim’s Christmas miracle while Scrooge walks up, says he’s been changed and asks for his forgiveness. Everyone sings “Whadayasay.”
