01 FROGTOWN - MIXED USE

Adressing the lack of public space and affordable housing within Frogtown, this project was designed to be a mixed use building, introducing commercial and open spaces, as well as housing units. The spiraling area of the building contains the commercial space, which utlizes the empty spaces as places to meander and gather. The open facades allow users to look out and above the low-rise buildings as they travel through the spiral. The long, diagonal volumes are housing units that have a simple studio-like organization and shape in order to be affordable. The residential bars also act as a “mesh� for the basement, filtering light to create unique environments for the public green space.

02 ADAPTIVE REUSE - CLERESTORY TO KINDERGARTEN

Through adaptive reuse, I wanted to transform a clerestory, once horse stable, into a kindergarten that encouraged movement and play, rather than emphasizing the original spatial conditions of segregated spaces.

The rhythmic placement of cells on a grid were broken down to be used as an organizational tool for the bays that housed the programs for the kindergarten. The interlocking walls and openings that exist on each bay prevent programs from being isolated, creating a physically and visually connected space that flows throughout the building. The roof was also altered to create a membrane that moves along the center datum, creating multiple roof to wall conditions to give the building different lively spatial conditions. In the courtyard areas where there is no roofing overhead, the exposed trusses begin to read as a different set of roofing rather than just exposed structure, reintroducing emphasising the original building with a new purpose.

03 LEIMERT PARK - MIXED USE

Located in Leimert Park, this project is directed towards younger residents that are moving into Leimert park, or having to move out from their family. This building creates an environment that fosters micro-communities for these new residents, while also creating a flexible space on the first floor to house various programs depending on needs and desires of the growing community. The entire structure is based on frames that exist on a matrix system, weaving dwelling units with one large flowing space that acts as both circulation and open, gathering spaces to create a more homogenous volume. Individual housing units are designed to act as modular 3D tetris-like puzzle pieces that lock and blend together to introduce a level of spatial anonymity.

The ground floor is an open space created with the same frame system with a descending ground plane that follows the grid created by the frames. The layers create varying spatial qualities through the available surface area between stairs, as well as the ground-to-ceiling height, allowing for different programs and gathering spaces depending on the size of event, as well as spatial desires. As Leimert Park focuses on expressing their artistic culture and community, a flexible art gallery, a presentation / performance area, and a pop-up shop were chosen as the three main programs that the first floor would house.

These programs address and promote the existing culture of Leimert Park, exposing and integrating new residents first-hand, while also addressing the need for public amenities.

03 SUSTAINABILITY In order to make housing more affordable, the units are reliant on sustainabilitiy. Sunlight is collected and stored in batteries located in the basement. Rainwater is collected through the edges of the cascading ground, treated then stored in water tanks in the basement. The perforations that exist throughout the building allow for air to ventelation each unit, as they would all have multiple windows to allow for passive cooling.
