Byron Community College Term 1 2014

...from the Director Nourishing the optimist. Are you labelled as optimistic or pessimistic? There’s one aspect of life that seems to reinforce the former. That’s the uplifting joy of an inspiring compassionate story of someone or a group who is really making a difference. It’s what we chose to learn in our lives that matters. And it’s how we consciously choose to do something with that learning. To help ourselves and our relationships and our world. Nearly 21 years ago, new adult community education organisations (ACE) were born in Mullumbimby and Byron Bay. Places that go right back to the workers education movement over 100 years ago. Places to develop a skill but also to study philosophy. This democratic movement has also believed that a society is better when we have social justice, share ideas and activity with others, improve our reading and writing, utilise technology to be healthy wealthy and wise. So what about right now? There are lots of choices of new things to learn and discover at our own community college. The internet has changed how we engage in research, and education. That can be good, but many of us across all ages still want to learn direct from the source in friendly groups with a brilliant teacher. That’s also why we love our festivals and community groups. So find something you’ve been wanting to learn, or take a risk and change your life with something completely different. Invest in your future and nourish your optimist! Richard Vinycomb

Trainer Profile: Jud King Early Childhood Education and Care

Early childhood education and care is my field of expertise and one which I am passionate about. Teaching this course permits me to convey my passion to future educators/carers studying the course. I have been involved in the field for twenty years, the latter two thirds in supervisory roles. My experience includes a variety of education and care facilities - long day care, preschools and vacation care. This enables me to draw from many experiences to example aspects of the course content. The course runs in an interesting manner by blending face-toface teaching with practical sessions, Power point presentations, photographs, videos, guest speakers and short excursions relevant to course content. The practical sessions are an important aspect and allow learners to experience child-focused experiences as they would in a job situation. The course is presented in a manner that ensures learners will have full understanding of best practice and good quality care which are essential characteristics of early childhood education and care today. This process prepares the students to go out into the workforce to start (or further) their career in the childcare sector. Byron Region Community College RTO: 90013

Introduction to writing romance & getting published

I have just done a couple of courses in weaving and cheese making. They haven’t sent me into a career, made me money, created a business opportunity or produced a serious hobby... but each course has the potential to open doors and give colour and depth to people who challenge themselves to learn something new. For me, the courses are a Pandora’s Box of unknowable outcomes. That gives them the ‘wow’ factor for me. The extreme variety is unmatched and just reading the courses often gives me delight in the thought of discovering untapped talents. Susie Burns – Mermaid Waters

Since completing a Travel Writing course with Kim Wildman and a Photoshop for Beginners course with Gerhard Veit at Byron Community College, I have gone on to write, design, and self-publish three guidebooks to the best places in Australia to go kayaking, canoeing, and stand up paddling. Four thousand copies of my books have been sold and this is now my main source of income. There is no doubt the quality of my publications owes much to the training that you provided. Thanks Byron Community College.

Student Profile: Andrew Dredge

During 2013 I studied Certificate III in Visual Arts with Byron Community College in the Laneway studio, Mullumbimby. It was two full days a week (plus homework) and included sculpture, drawing, painting and printmaking. We had a number of talented and experienced tutors and guest tutors, including Virginia Reid (our main teacher), Michelle Dawson, Michael Cusack, Rene Bolton, Suvira McDonald, Ian Pearson, Jules Ober and Annique Goldenberg. The basis was to learn the fundamental techniques of fine arts, such as composition, colour theory and life drawing, which I found improved my confidence and ability. In the many exercises there was room for each of us to explore our creative freedom too. I’m starting a Fine Art Degree in Brisbane next year, such a privilege to continue learning, the course and the friends I’ve made have been so supportive. I loved it! I promised my son Christopher and his lovely Lara a cheese making course so this goes straight to them. Once again BCC, thank you so much”.

Message posted on our facebook site I am very grateful to Byron Community College for the courses I have done, and the ones I am yet to do. They cost little in the way of money and enlarge life. Some save money and also health, such as the Green Cleaning workshop. I had bees that were in my eaves and learnt how to look after them in hives, and now have honey to share. Better than a holiday away for me to learn more about our present world. I want to do the butterfly workshop again, and the water tour. Actually there are many I would like to do. Great selection. A UNIQUE NEW PUBLICATION: Sustainability for Educators by Katrina Shields and Lisa Hoggard Education needs to be ahead of the curve to be most useful. Never was there a more pressing time to create the skills and motivation for creating a sustainable future. Now is the time to prepare students for a low-carbon economy. Byron Community College has launched a publication to address this need: “Sustainability for Educators” which is a comprehensive toolkit of learning activities and resources.

Co-author Katrina Shields who is a Sustainability Education Coordinator says “We saw an important gap that needed filling. This book makes it easier for busy educators to communicate principles of sustainability and run empowering learning activities. This book also explores the difference in approach needed in education ABOUT sustainability including technical skills and education FOR sustainability with provides people with knowledge, motivation and capacity to bring about change. There are lots of engaging and fun things to do in groups or individually that leaves participants more motivated and inspired. We don’t focus on the problems but emphasise that solutions already exist.” The other author Lisa Hoggard works with business organisations and professional associations and says:” It is important that we make sustainability a ‘less fluffy’ concept and anchor it in real individual and organisational experience. People will look at sustainability through the lens of their own values. What makes or breaks sustainability practise is how well you deal with people’s values. I find it useful to think of my learners wearing a t-shirt that says “What’s in it for me?” If you can make your teaching

about sustainability relevant, meaningful and give it some inherent personal value you can make real changes.’ Reviews: “While there are plenty of books about sustainability, there are precious few on education for sustainability, essential to enable the mind shift we need for a sustainable future. This is a beautifully designed collection of tried and tested activities that engage, challenge and empower educators and their students from early childhood to tertiary. A must for anyone involved in sustainability education.” Dr Caroline Smith, National Centre for Sustainability, Swinburne University of Technology “A treasure chest of pretty much everything you wanted to know about sustainability education … informative and accessible, attractive and at the same time substantial.” Professor Stephen Sterling, Head of Sustainability Education, Centre for Sustainable Futures at Plymouth University, UK

Student Profile: Lynette Zito Certificate IV in Training and Assessment 2013

As a self-employed business woman wanting to update my skill set, I decided to do a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. So I asked around for recommendations and Fiona Plesman and Byron Community College topped the list. I was a little hesitant at first because of the distance I would have to travel. But wanting the best for myself and my clients, I decided that the 90 minutes drive each way would be worth it. And I haven’t been disappointed. From my first contact with the administration staff, my experience has been wonderful. Fiona is an amazing trainer, knowledgeable and genuinely interested in her students. All the staff I have had contact with have been helpful, professional and friendly. This decision has brought rewards I never envisaged, such as meeting the group of great people who are also taking the course and being challenged by and enjoying the learning. Thanks Fiona and Byron Community College for doing what you do so well!
