CITY’S LOWER FIRE RATING MEANS A DECREASE IN INSURANCE RATES FOR HOMEOWNERS AND BUSINESSES

The City of Byram Fire Department has been busy the past several months. We worked diligently to get ready for our review by the State Rating Bureau that happens once every 4 years. A representative of the Rating Bureau spent 3 days with us going through multitudes of records, reviewing incident calls, daily logs, spot checking our computer records, reviewing personnel files, looking at area maps and cataloging our equipment, including trucks. It was an intensive process, but one we were ready for. As a result, residents and businesses of Byram can enjoy a DECREASE in their insurance premiums. Our rating for the City of Byram dropped from a class 7 to a class 5 effective April 23, 2018. We encourage each homeowner who lives in the city limits of Byram and each Byram business owner to contact your insurance company and be sure they are aware of this decrease in the city’s rating by the State Rating Bureau. If your insurance company needs proof, give us a call, 601-351-9700, and we can email you or your insurance company a copy of the official award letter we received in April, 2018. Or you can come by our business office and pick up a copy, Monday – Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. We are located at 200 Byram Parkway. This decrease will save you money!!

Also, the Fire Department has received a new E-One Custom Pumper Engine. This engine was ordered last year and was built to the specifications requested by our department. We took delivery of the engine in March of this year.

The city was afforded an opportunity to receive another custom pumper and took possession of that pumper in April. The acquisition of this truck was in preparation for Station 2 that is slated to be built in the very near future. This second station will be built in the Big Creek Road area, not far from Kroger and Country Woods Baptist Church.

If you have a worn out, faded, tattered American flag that needs to be retired, there is a flag repository at Central Fire Station located at 200 Byram Parkway (across the road from Wee Care Day Care Center).

Bring your old flag to the fire station and place it in the box which is located in the front lobby. The flags will be transferred to a boy scout troop to be retired properly in an official flag burning ceremony.

The City of Byram is proud of our country’s military veterans and active duty members. These men and women play a vital role in the preservation of our freedoms in America. One way to honor and pay tribute to these men and women

is by recognizing them on our Wall of Honor at City Hall. Anyone who has served or is currently serving in the military and has been or is currently living in Byram is eligible to have his or her name on this Wall. Plaques for each branch of the military are engraved with each individual’s name, rank and years of service.

“It was for freedom that Christ set us free....”

(Galatians 5:1, NASB95) On July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States of America. Conflict between the colonies and England was already a year old when the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in the summer of 1776.

In a June 7th session in the Pennsylvania State House, later known as Independence Hall, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia presented a resolution with these now famous words: "Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved."

Many events led up to what we now call the American Revolutionary War. Many battles were fought - thirty-six battles beginning with Lexington and Concord (1775) and ending with the Battle of Yorktown (1781). Innumerable lives were lost. Much blood was shed.

In the end, the colonies declared their independence. “It requires efforts, it presupposes mental and moral qualities of a high order to be generally diffused in the society where it exists. (John C. Calhoun, speech, U.S. House of Representatives, Jan. 31, 1816). Freedom is not free. It comes with a cost.

The Apostle Paul says in his epistle to the Galatians, “It was for freedom that Christ set us free….” This freedom involved the loss of life. This freedom involved the shedding of blood. Christ has set those who by faith trust in Him free from the yoke of slavery, the bondage of the law. “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36, NASB95). Jesus was not speaking of political freedom. He wasn’t speaking merely of a freedom by which we are relieved from physical bondage. He was speaking for true freedom to serve God, to fulfill the purposes of those specially created in God’s image.

Sin deprives us of this fulfillment because sin clouds our minds, degrades our feelings, and enslaves our wills. This is what the Reformers called “total depravity;” its only remedy is the grace of God through spiritual rebirth (3:3), regeneration, faith and repentance.

During the days shortly after the abolition of slavery, many who were formerly bound by strict rules and regulations, found themselves totally free. Without the enforced boundaries

of their taskmasters they soon found themselves wanting to go back to their old positions. Within those boundaries they felt secure. But within those same boundaries they would never be truly free.

It is within this context that Paul has been speaking to the church in Galatia about freedom; freedom from the binding nature of the law. “But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed” (Galatians 3:23, NASB95). There were people during Paul’s time, as there are people now, who would tell you that the way of righteousness and salvation is by strict observance to a set of prescribed rules and regulations. Paul says this is nonsense. “May it never be (Gal. 2:17; 3:21;6:14)! These ‘laws’ were intended to be tutors, teachers, to guide its pupils in the way of righteousness, not to be their righteousness, so he says, “do not be subject again to the yoke of slavery.” Don’t discount the heavy price, loss of life and shedding of blood it took to give you freedom.

Jesus Christ has set us free from the curse of the law. He has freed us so we might have full access to the throne of grace and all its benefits: righteousness, sanctification, redemption, forgiveness of sin. He has freed us from the condemnation of the law. The believer in Christ becomes one with Him. And now, one with Him, having died to the law, not under the law, but under grace (Rom 7:14), the believer no longer needs the external force of the law to keep him righteous before God. Jesus Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law (Gal. 3:13).

If Christ died to set us free – not to make us slaves to a list of do’s and don’ts’s then why would anyone want to abandon spiritual adulthood and go back to being a child. Would we ever want to go back to living as it was before the American Revolution, subjecting ourselves to the laws, taxes and restrictions that led up to the Battles of Lexington and Concord? I think the answer would be a resounding, “No!” May it never be!

It is who Christ died to set us free.

Martin Luther, the Protestant Reformer, said, “A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject of all, subject to all” (On Christian Liberty).

The deeper we all understand the ‘law of liberty’ that has set us free in Christ, the more free each of us will become in Christ.

It is my hope that you will have a wonderful time of celebrating Independence Day, July 4th, this year, but as you observe this day with family and friends that you would also remember, “It was for freedom that Christ has set you free” and in Him you are truly free indeed!

Palestine Homemakers Club

By Kathy Kammer The Palestine Homemakers once again held a crafts day in late May. And once more, we'd like to thank Wynndale Presbyterian Church for the use of their fellowship hall.

President Robin Simmons called the meeting to order and we pledged our allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

Dawn Spellman led members in a brief devotional reminding us of the cost of following Jesus Christ. In this world, Satan will show us his best and hides from us the his worst. Our Lord will tell us how costly it is to follow Him, but also He tells us the unspeakable joy that awaits those who put their trust in Him alone. Dawn then asked God's blessings on our fellowship and refreshments.

Tasty stuffed eggs, Friendship bread, chips with mango salsa dip and cookies gave those in attendance another great reason to come to our meeting that day! Our thanks go to Dawn and Robin for treating us!

Secretary/Treasurer Kathy Kammer read the minutes from our February meeting and gave the treasurer's report. Our business portion of the meeting continued as Vice President Karen Crawford mentioned the postponement of our scheduled meeting to Yazoo City for the previous month. A highlight of today's meeting was wishing member Ruth Gunn a very happy 95th birthday and to re-welcome her friend, Helen Sanders, to our gathering.

Members were encouraged to participate in the upcoming Fall County Fair in September where members will bring their homemade items, fresh baked foods, and canned goods for judging.

Karen Crawford showed us the completed Christmas ornaments from our February meeting and those members who were not finished were able to do so. Each member present brought with them to today's meeting, a clear zip-locked bag containing personal hygiene items, new socks, non-perishable snacks, bottled water and various other items. These bags will be distributed to those in need during the hot summer months.

Another highlight each year is our annual plant swap. Today, members took home Iris bulbs, fresh mint rootings, lamb's ear, sturdy begonia cuttings, Confederate Roses, and some lovely Gladiola blooms--just to mention

a few.

Our next summer meeting will be with our sister homemaker clubs as we meet for our Expressive Arts day on July 5th. For more information about Homemaker Clubs, please contact: Theresa Hand, County Coordinator for Hinds, at the Mississippi State Extension Office located in Raymond.

FRONT PORCH RAMBLINGS

Folks, Mary Anne and I have flown the coop again. This time, however, we left Raymond after sun up, not during the early morning predawn as in the past. We've been very busy this year and haven't had many days to kick our feet up and relax. My brother, oldest son and I have been spending one day a week maintaining our hunting camp near Rolling Fork. The property is owned by me, brother and two other individuals. Our fathers established the camp over eighty years ago and have been handed down to us. Three generations of family and friends have had many happy times and forged lifelong memories.

But, the time has come for us to sell. Health issues and other considerations, led us to contract with a realtor. After all of the paperwork was signed, it was time for Mary Anne and me to take the opportunity to escape for a few days. We're in good health, according to the doctors for our age, live close to family who can keep an eye on our house, garden and Mary Anne's cat. It is wonderful to recharge your batteries, but we do miss seeing our grandsons when we're away for an extended period of time. We have opportunities a couple of time each year, to satisfy our wanderlust by traveling to interesting places in this wonderful country.

We recently visited the Creation Museum and the ARK Encounter theme parks in Northern Kentucky. For a year or so, Mary Anne researched the internet and reserved entrance tickets for both places. I was overwhelmed at the magnitude and architectural detail featured at both sites. As we were driving to the shuttle bus parking area, the ARK was visible off in the distance on a high hill. My first thought was, "This place is larger than my imagination". The weather was real time in that as we departed the shuttle terminal, the skies turned very dark and a misting rain started to fall.

After we entered the ARK, the rain increased in intensity and continued on and off all day long. Just before closing time, late in the afternoon, as we returned to the shuttle bus, the clouds parted and beautiful sunshine provided us a safe return to our overnight accommodations.

The Creation Museum is a family friendly attraction. Great speakers, stunning exhibits, live entertainment and video presentations, led us through the creation of the world from a scientific point of view. Of particular interest to me, because of my biological background, the speakers were able to answer the age old question, "How did Noah get 2 species of oxygen breathing animals on the ARK?" He didn't!! Neither did he include any creatures of the sea. The facts that were presented explained that 2 young animals capable of reproducing, from the 5th descending biological taxonomic rank, family, were housed on the ARK. Obviously, that action reduced the number of animals necessary to repopulate the earth once the world flood ended. For years I've been a purveyor of words, but these sites left me short of adequate descriptive words and phrases. Although, we drove straight to Kentucky, we took a slight detour, on our return home, to our 2nd most favorite place on earth, the Smokey Mountains east of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Our most favorite place is Raymond, of course, because our grandsons and family are there.

During our time on the road, we had the occasion to visit independent book shops to discuss the availability of my five novels. One in particular I found very interesting a small shop off the beaten path, east of Gatlinburg, TN. We met the owner of a combined book store and gourmet coffee shop. was, even if you're not a coffee lover, out of this world. She and her husband lived on the South Side of Chicago, according to the singer Jim Croce is the "Baddest Part of Town” and drove fifteen hours each year, for over twenty years, to vacation in the Smokey’s. One year they made the decision to pull up roots in Chicago and move to the Smokey’s on a permanent basis. They have been residents for fourteen years and opened the book store and coffee shop with plans to return to Chicago only for short visits to friends and family.

But, then as life has it, all good things must end. So we left early in the morning and pulled into the driveway before night fall.

Once we arrived home, it was obvious, that our garden had survived as well as the grass in it. Likewise, the yard looked like the hard work Mary Anne put in prior to our departure, had never happened. So, as I sit on the front porch finishing this article, I'm reminded to hurry up because the grass needs mowing before another rain.

In the ensuing days after Mary Anne and I returned to Raymond, we had several conversations regarding the very powerful, eye opening impact this trip has had on our life.

EXTRAORDINARY NURSE RECOGNIZED AT MERIT HEALTH CENTRAL

JACKSON, Miss., May 31, 2018 – Merit Health Central recently honored its Q2 2018 DAISY award recipient, Katie Wood, RN, with a reception in her department, the intensive care unit. Wood has worked at the hospital for three months and was selected from 12 other nurses, all of whom were nominated by patients and/or family members of patients. A nurse is chosen to receive the award by members of the DAISY selection committee, a committee which is comprised of nurses working in various areas of the hospital.

Wood received a certificate and a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved from stone by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.

One of her nominators wrote, “Katie is a compassionate and caring nurse. She provided excellent care for my brother. She never left him without making sure he wasn’t choking. Katie came to suction him often and never seemed to be tired of doing that. We could tell she loves being a nurse and had empathy. She also provided support to me. Due to the devastation that Maria/Irma caused, my brother was moved here with no support or family. I flew out as soon as I could to be here with him and didn’t have a lot of time to prepare. Katie went above and beyond to help me secure a room to be close to him. She is my DAISY nominee and I will never forget her. She will remain in my prayers. God bless her!”

Merit Health Central Chief Nursing Officer Laura Knight, MSN, BSN, RN, said, “We are proud to be among the healthcare organizations participating in the DAISY Award program. It’s important our nurses like Katie know their work is highly valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do that.”

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was developed in memory of Patrick Barnes.

Patrick suffered from the auto-immune disease, Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, or ITP. His family was so impressed by the skill, caring and compassion his nurses gave him during his extended illness and multiple hospitalizations that they founded the DAISY Foundation and the award. DAISY stands for “diseases attacking the immune system.

CLINTON, MS (06/01/2018)-- Laura Davis of Jackson Recognized at Mississippi College Honors Convocation Mississippi College recently held its annual Honors Convocation to recognize students academic and service achievements within the university and community. Hosted by First Baptist Church Clinton, students, parents, and faculty were in attendance to honor the selected students during the university's chapel service.

Among the recognitions four students were given the Scholarship For Outstanding Service award. This scholarship is given to four undergraduate students who have made significant contributions to campus leadership and life outside of the Student Government Association.

SéLah Ellice Norwood of Byram recently graduated with Special Honors from the MS School of the Arts in Brookhaven, MS. At MSA she was a vocal discipline student, an Art’s Ambassador, Beta Club Vice-President and the Vice-President and choir directress of the student-led gospel group, Total Praize.

She has accumulated over $1 million in academic scholarship offers to various colleges throughout the country. She has accepted a full academic scholarship to Tuskegee University in Alabama and will major in Biology. Her goal is to become a Laryngologist, which deals with illnesses and injuries of the larynx.

SéLah is the daughter of David and Antrice Norwood-Friday and Melissa and Michael Guise. Her sister is D’Lalah Friday, grandparents are Ellis Norwood, Jr., Cleo B. Norwood and Linda Friday of Jackson. SéLah is an active member of the Greater Clark Street M.B. Church.

She gives all thanks to God and all of her family for their continuous love and support.

Eybriunna Lewis of Terry Earns a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree From Georgia State University

ATLANTA, GA (06/14/2018)-- Eybriunna Lewis of Terry earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the Georgia State University Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions during the spring semester of 2018.

The Chautauqua Garden Club will be selling homemade ice cream, and the Copiah County 4-H will serve hot and cold drinks all day.

Taking It In

Rev. Roger Collins Grace Presbyterian Church roger@gracepcabyram.net I admit, that I have a hard time listening to sermons without a critical analysis of the sermon and the person delivering the message.

After all, I am a preacher myself, so it goes with the profession.

There is a sense in which all of us should be both worshipers and critical listeners. We need to be sure we are hearing God’s word and that requires more of us than simply accepting whatever is presented. So I expect my own hearers to be like Bereans (Acts 17:11) and be sure from Scripture that what they hear is true to God’s word.

Listening to a panel discussion on a Hillsong channel, I was interested to hear a few of their ministry leaders discuss how they reach their audiences. The first spoke of the need today to use stories, and particularly those that appeal at the emotional level. “Today’s millennial generation demands it,” he said. “They are ‘story’ oriented and it has to impact them.”

The second was a woman who heads up the London Hillsong ministry. She doesn’t like ‘preaching’, so she ‘communicates’ seeking to connect on a very relational and personal level. The third, if I remember rightly, leads the Buenos Aires Hillsong. I expected him to embrace the previous woman’s comments and say that he ‘communicates’, but he surprised me. He spoke openly of preaching with the desire to help his listeners learn to incorporate his teaching into their lives with practical application. I found their comments intriguing.

Crowd size and TV programming compelled me to consider their celebrated methodologies.

In considering our continued study of the Apostle Paul’s missionary travels in Acts, we are privileged to have at least a summation, or perhaps the principle points of one of Paul’s great missionary sermons in Acts 13.16-41.

Reading the whole sermon takes about four minutes and it would be great if you did that before you continue.

The outline is traceable with some effort.

Major historical events loom large. Scripture quotations are significant! Beginning with the Exodus, Paul traced a familiar history from the beginning of the nation of Israel to King David, then to John the Baptist and ultimately to the person of the resurrected Jesus with a very direct Gospel exhortation. So we might put it in simple outline as 1) That which you know well, 2) That which you have heard about recently of John and Jesus, and 3) That which you must know about King Jesus.

What these Jewish synagogue attenders knew well was that their identity as Israel began with the very important story of deliverance and inheritance. It was their own story because it belonged to the Jewish people. Paul effectively connects with his audience as he retells that ancient story of God bringing his people out of Egypt and into their inheritance in the land of the Canaanites. We think of it as a Biblical story, which many of us learned again and again during our Sunday School journey. But it is much more than that. The story provided a frame for the early church which brought out the vivid hues of the gospel. By telling something that every Jew identified with, he was then able to weave together the familiar with the profound and set the good news in its context of suffering and sin.

A method evident in Temple worship - “God will provide a sacrifice.”

I think all of you can relate. We know stories like that ourselves. National stories are the easiest to recall. We might not have been in Dallas or Memphis, or even have been born yet, but the assassination of President Kennedy or of Martin Luther King is indelibly written on our personal consciousness. Pearl Harbor, 9/11 and Katrina are also like that. We remember where we were and what we were doing and in the retelling of those events we include ourselves. They have become our stories though they deal with others’ personal tragedy. We are a part of the national narrative

and significant events connect us. “Tell me about Katrina,” we may say. But then we tell about Katrina. It is our story to tell, too.

Among the Jews, their connection as Jews finds its center in the story of God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt. The descendants of Abraham became a nation on that journey to Canaan. It included more than Paul mentions, but “God’s uplifted arm” clearly references the power of the Almighty that was manifested through the signs and wonders of Moses and the freeing of oppressed slaves from the greatest power of that ancient world. Paul does speak of the forty years of wandering because of the hardness of heart evident among that generation. Godly Jews identified with that too. Nevertheless, they did receive the land and more significantly, they acquired a king, ultimately “a king after God’s own heart.”

A homeless people attained a kingdom with a great King - David! Yet Paul’s actual audience felt the loss of independence and freedom as Jerusalem was oppressed by Rome. Another king that could deliver once again was essential to the hopes and dreams of that generation.

That was a story with “roots and wings” as they say. It is an unfinished story today and it still preaches. Entertaining stories can be a gift of God for a weary people, but it is critical that the salvation story connects at a the very deep level of longing and hope. That place where we confront our sin and broken lives. I hope Paul’s sermon impacts you at a very emotive level where you readily see that the application calls for trust in and worship of the risen

Christ. “My hope is built on nothing less...”

By Jordan Jones Writer’s block, something I think every writer goes through from time to time.

One of the things that are very frustrating as a writer.

Over the past year of me writing articles, I’ve encountered writer’s block quite a few times.

I usually do these things to get over it.

• Act like no one reads my work • Write down the ideas Just write Back when I first found out about medium and made an account, of course, I didn’t get any views or reads.

I wrote like a madman, 2 articles or more a week.

Some of them were lengthy and some were not. I still write with passion but then I wrote so someone somewhere could come across it someway and take something from it.

One way to get out of a writer’s block period is to act as if nobody watches you.

And you are starting from scratch again trying to gain readers.

Sometimes The Best Ideas Are The Ones We Don’t Write Down (Like This Article) . Write down each and every blog post idea, even if it feels weird. Or even if you think it won’t do as well as the rest of them. Nobody is watching anyway.

Have that mindset going. It will make you work without caring about the ”numbers” Numbers are what makes the world go round right?

The ideas that we pass up on are sometimes the ones that do the best. Like my first article, for example, has the highest amount of views out of all of my articles, which is 1k.

And the article had lots of grammar errors.

For Crying Out Loud Just Write The main thing that helps me is just sitting down, and putting my thoughts on the paper.

All of the procrastination and over thinking fades away, like the wake of a ship.

Doing this makes me write good quality articles after a writer’s block period.

Not saying to just type anything up and press post, but sometimes just writing it helps!

The weeklong educational program promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), while training students and adults with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and decision marketing This program is specifically designed for trainees who have a particular interest in programming and engineering. The mission of Space Camp Robotics is to show trainees how engineers develop solutions for real-world problems using real-world technologies. At all age levels, trainees use state-of-the-art robotics systems to compete in air, sea and land activities and missions. Using the Office of Naval Research’s SeaPerch undersea robotics, Adams and the other trainees test payloads on an unmanned aerial vehicle, all while strengthening teamwork and leadership skills. At the end of their missions, the teams arrived in time to graduate with honors.

OXFORD, Miss. (June 4, 2018) – This morning, Century Club Charities, host organization for the North Mississippi Classic, presented a $100,000 gift to Friends of Children’s Hospital (FOCH). The Country Club of Oxford hosted the inaugural Web.com TOUR North

Mississippi Classic in April where 156 players competed for a $550,000 purse. The tournament champion, Eric Axley, received $99,000.

At FBC Byram K/Daycare, we are focused on teaching our children about God's Love and how to share it with others. This summer they are learning all about being the hands and feet of God. Each week, they are learning and growing in their faith through devotionals, songs and skits!

Then, they are working on a service project to help encourage and minister to someone else. All of our activities teach life skills, have a biblical reference or are rooted in an academic skill to keep their mind fresh over the summer. They are having so much fun, they don’t even realize that they are still learning!!! Recently, they made no bake cookies! They learned how to read a recipe and used some of their math skills like measuring, in fun way! CREATE ACTION PLAN TO DEESCALATE THOUGHTS OF SUICIDE

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi’s suicide statistics are alarming, but experts say there are tools for coping with extreme distress that often leads to thoughts of suicide – and just as importantly, for creating an action plan to have when intense feelings escalate.

“Extreme emotions don’t last forever,” said Dr. Courtney Bagge, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center whose specialties include suicide, its treatment and its prevention.

“Because episodes of extreme distress are almost always brief, temporarily putting space between yourself and the means of self-harm can save a life.”

The need for suicide prevention education is great. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s 2018 data for Mississippi shows that on average, one person dies by suicide every 23 hours in the state. It’s the 13th leading cause of death in Mississippi, and the third leading cause for those ages 15-34. That’s just confirmed suicides, and not any that go unreported.

If you are experiencing emotions that have brought you to the brink of attempting suicide, “you need to call 911 or a crisis line, or have somebody else do it,” Bagge said. “Ditto for taking those steps for someone you know.

“You might have thoughts of not wanting to be here anymore. It might only happen occasionally, but having a plan for what to do when those thoughts occur can help you stop them from escalating,” Bagge said.

It’s important to note that the majority of people who have suicidal thoughts don’t die by suicide, Bagge said. By getting help, “there is hope, and they can go on to live healthy, meaningful and productive lives.”

There are specific actions you can take and resources you can lean on to help you cope with increased distress and de-escalate emotions that are running high, she said.

“The goal is to help you move from a hot

moment, where maybe you can’t even think, to a cool moment, where you know, even though things may feel hopeless, you can get through it,” she said.

“Suicide crisis lines are available 24/7 and staffed by compassionate counselors trained to help those in extreme distress,” Bagge said.

Confidentially call the toll-free National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or locally, the Jackson Crisis Line at 601-713-4357.

However, crisis lines aren’t just for those who are actively contemplating suicide.

“They’re a wonderful resource for discussing not just suicide, but painful emotions,” Bagge said. “It’s something I talk to my patients about. People who are worried about someone can also call for information about how to help.”

Those needing immediate help, advice or a listening ear also can use their smartphones to text, or even to have a web chat with experienced suicide prevention counselors. “A lot of the time, our younger generation likes to text rather than talk to someone,” Bagge said. “I encourage everyone and anyone to put these resources into their phone, and for the text, there’s a setup process,” she said. “When you’re in a distressed state, for yourself or others, that’s not something you are able to do.”

Another key resource for everyone is the free Virtual Hope Box app, Bagge said. A user can click on “distract me,” “relax me,” “inspire me” and “coping tools.” And, you can upload important photos, quotes or other images that can uplift you by clicking “remind me.”

Not everyone is familiar with technology tools aside from crisis numbers. Christina Jordan of Tupelo lost her 18-year-old son Gabriel when he took his life in 2014. Although she spent years getting Gabriel professional help – not always easy because of limited access -- she wishes she’d had more resources to draw on as her son struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts.

“There are services available now that I

didn’t know about with my son,” she said. “I believe that could have made a difference.”

“It’s often difficult to find the help you need, depending on where you are and where you live. In Mississippi, it can be a challenge,” said Dr. Scott Rodgers, professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. “A psychiatrist like me would be helpful, but there aren’t many of us around Mississippi, especially child psychiatrists.”

Bagge offers these suggestions to those who need coping strategies to de-escalate their distress, whether it’s at the point of an immediate suicide attempt, or whether it’s day-today anxiety and depression that produce negative emotions: • Take your medications daily, eat and exercise regularly, and avoid alcohol and substance abuse.

“I tell my patients that a lot of times, you don’t want to eat, but make sure you eat something every four hours,” Bagge said. “By making sure that you are eating, being active and taking your medicines, it’s giving you the best chance to not react as strongly when you experience negative events.

“If you are depressed, alcohol or substance abuse makes it worse,” she said. “I tell patients that until they are stabilized in treatment with a combination of medications and therapy, not to drink alcohol. It can make you focus more on the negative situation, and not be able to focus on the buffers that would stop you from reacting, or stop you when you are considering suicide.”

• Create distractions such as mindful breathing, getting outside, and focusing on the little things. And, practice them before you are in a distressed state.

“Breathe in deeply through your nose, fill your belly with air for three or four seconds, then exhale,” Bagge said. “You’re focusing your mind on the breathing, and it can be incredibly helpful in centering yourself.

“It’s hot outside, but feeling the sun on your face is a good thing. Don’t eat at your desk. At least go sit by a window. Go to (a shopping area) and watch people. Walk around the block. It gets you out of your head. If you’re overwhelmed in your home, do one task that would take 15 minutes, like a load of laundry.

You will feel accomplished, but it’s not a huge thing for you to do.”

• Change your temperature.

“Hold ice in your hand, and notice it melting.

It’s hard to think when you are holding ice,” Bagge said. “Put an ice pack around your nose and eyes, and hold it there. It will slow everything down. It sounds scary, but getting into a cold shower will shock your system and slow

it down.

• Call a friend, not necessarily to tell them you’re in distress, but to distract yourself.

“This can be someone from church or your synagogue, or a sponsor of some sort,” she said. “It could be a coworker or acquaintance.”

Her advice to friends and family: Don’t just tell a suicidal person they need help and leave it at that. And, lock away all guns and ammunition in separate locations.

“Listen non-judgmentally, take them seriously, and remind them that you are there to help.

Help them to get into treatment. Help them to make the appointment. It’s not easy to take these steps alone,” Bagge said. “Take them to the emergency room. People should be responsive when their loved ones talk about suicide or emotional difficulties, just like they would about diabetes, heart attack or stroke.”

“Depression and anxiety are chronic illnesses,” Rodgers said. “They’re treatable. Patients can be very well managed and lead happy, productive lives.”

Most suicides in this country involve a firearm, usually a gun that belongs to a family member. If someone is actively exhibiting warning signs of suicide, “our recommendation is to temporarily remove the firearm from the house,” Bagge said. “We know this can reduce suicide. With a firearm, there’s usually not a chance to recover.”

Use both professional resources and coping mechanisms to get ahead of emotions that can escalate, Bagge said. “It’s important to have a plan in place, and places you can go to provide distractions, day or night,” she said.

“Too often, we think of the end game,” she said. “If we can notice when our negative emotions are increasing, and we can use some coping strategies at that moment, it might not escalate to a crisis on that day.

“It’s about using strategies, farther up a chain of events or feelings, that can help you in the moment, and not waiting until when you are thinking about killing yourself.”

Sen. David Blount Legislative Budget Update

The new state budget year began on July 1 and ends June 30, 2019. My column in this issue focuses on the budget year ahead and how the Legislature spends our state tax dollars. This budget was finalized in the 2018 legislative session that ended in late March.

Overall, the state budget for 2018-19 totals $20.8 billion. Almost half of this amount comes from the federal government. The budget is divided into four main parts: 1. Federal funds designated for specific purposes. This includes money the U.S. Congress sends Mississippi to help pay for health care providers (the Medicaid program draws down almost $5 billion in federal funds), some education programs, Interstate highway repairs, or other uses. Total: $9.4 billion.

2. State general fund dollars. This is money from state sales and income taxes that funds schools, colleges, foster care, the judicial system, prisons, and other uses. It is designated each year through the legislative process. Total: Approx. $5.5 billion.

3. State special funds designated for specific purposes. For example, the gas tax that is directed to state highway maintenance, charges recovered by the University Medical Center, or license fees to fund specific departments. Total: Approx. $5.4 billion.

4. Directed state source dollars. This is primarily the one-cent sales tax for education and money from the tobacco lawsuit for health care. Total: $569 million.

During the legislative session, most of the work on the budget focuses on the general fund since it is not obligated by law to a specific purpose. Where does this money come from? Here are the sources of Mississippi’s $5.5 billion general fund:

Sales tax: 37 percent ($2.1 billion) Income tax: 33 percent ($1.8 billion) Corporate income and franchise tax: 9 percent ($531 million)

Use taxes: 5 percent ($264 million) Gaming and tobacco taxes each generate about 2.5 percent of the state general fund budget (about $140 million and $145 million respectively). One item that may be of interest: If Mississippi was to start a state lottery, most estimates put net increase to the general fund of around $70 million.

Because of tax cuts and meager economic growth, the general fund budget is less than it was four years ago: In budget year 2015-16, the general fund was $5.7 billion. The corporate franchise tax is set to phase out because of the massive 2016 tax cut bill. This bill, which has only begun to take effect, will ultimately reduce the state budget above by $417 million each year. I voted against the bill.

MSU pre-nursing students now eligible for early entry program to achieve UMMC professional degree

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State and the University of Mississippi Medical Center are new partners in an early entry program for MSU pre-nursing freshmen to be admitted to UMMC’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

Students in MSU’s Freshman Early Entry (FEE) program earn approximately 65 credit hours at MSU during their freshman and sophomore years before transferring to the University of Mississippi School of Nursing in Jackson for their junior and senior years to complete the nursing degree.

Admission to this degree program can occur in the fall of the freshman year through early entry or through regular entry after completion of the pre-nursing curriculum at MSU. The deadline for consideration for early entry is Nov. 1.

“As the Baby Boom generation shifts into their retirement years, the healthcare industry will be vital to serve the medical needs of a growing population,” said MSU Provost and Executive Vice President Judy Bonner. “That also means that the healthcare industry will be a source of high-quality employment opportunities for those who have prepared themselves to assume those roles. That’s why we are excited about this innovative partnership with the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the promise it holds to accelerate those opportunities for MSU students.”

Bonner said students granted early entry status must enroll as freshmen at MSU and then apply to the Freshman Early Entry program between July 1 and Nov. 1 through the UMMC Registrar’s Office. MSU Freshman Early Entry program students who follow the progression and retention criteria will be automatically eligible to enroll in the University of Mississippi School of Nursing to complete the BSN degree.

MSU advisers in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Dr. A. Randle and Marilyn W.

White Pre-Med Advisory Office and in MSU’s Career Center will help guide students and answer questions. A UMMC nursing faculty member also will be available to advise early entry students.

The program gives MSU pre-nursing students the opportunity to engage in both professional and personal relationships with UMMC nursing faculty and upperclassmen immediately upon entering the program.

“Partnering with MSU to provide an early entry pathway into the traditional undergraduate nursing program at UMMC is exciting,” said Kim Hoover, professor and dean of the University of Mississippi School of Nursing.

“Students who are able to make early decisions about a career in nursing receive structured guidance to ensure their success during the first two years. The School of Nursing at UMMC welcomes the opportunity to prepare well-trained nurses to improve health care for Mississippians.”

The memorandum of agreement between the two universities outlines the benefits of early entry in that students will avoid the competitive selection process in which regular entry students must participate for admission to the BSN program. Early entry students are eligible for School of Nursing scholarships at UMMC and may participate in professional student organizations earlier in their collegiate careers.

Eligibility criteria for the program include an ACT score of 25 or greater and a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or higher. Additional criteria may include personal interviews, written essays, pre-nursing testing, and scholastic and non-scholastic extracurricular and service activities. A non-refundable application fee of $25 is required.

This report is designed to inform you about the quality water and services we deliver to you every day. Our constant goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water. We want you to understand the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our water resources. We are committed to providing you with information because informed customers are our best allies. Our water source is from wells drawing from the Forest Hill Aquifer.

The source water assessment has been completed for our public water system to determine the overall susceptibility of its drinking water supply to identify potential sources of contamination. A report containing detailed information on how the susceptibility determinations were made has been furnished to our public water system and is available for viewing upon request. The wells for the Eastside Water Association have received lower rankings in terms of susceptibility to contamination.

They are held on Tuesday after the 4th Sunday of the month at 6:30 PM at the Eastside Water Association Office.

We routinely monitor for contaminants in your drinking water according to Federal and State laws. This table below lists all of the drinking water contaminants that were detected during the period of January 1st to December 31st , 2017. In cases where monitoring wasn't required in 2017, the table reflects the most recent results. As water travels over the surface of land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials and can pick up substances or contaminants from the presence of animals or from human activity; microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, that may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife; inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban storm-water runoff, industrial, or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming; pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm-water runoff, and residential uses; organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations and septic systems; radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations that limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. All drinking water, including bottled drinking water, may be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. It's important to remember that the presence of these contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk.

In this table you will find many terms and abbreviations you might not be familiar with. To help you better understand these terms we've provided the following definitions: Action Level - the concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements which a water system must follow.

Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) - The "Maximum Allowed" (MCL) is the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology.

Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) - The "Goal"{MCLG) is the level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety.

Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL) - The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary to control microbial contaminants.

Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level Goal (MRDLG) - The level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk of health. MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contaminants.

Parts per million (ppm) or Milligrams per liter (mg//) - one part per million corresponds to one minute in two years or a single penny in $10,000.

Parts per billion (ppb) or Micrograms per liter- one part per billion corresponds to one minute in 2,000 years, or a single penny in $10,000,000.

Level 1 Assessment A study of the water system to identify potential problems and determine (if possible) why total coliform bacteria have been found in our water system.

(1) Total Coliform/E Coli Coliforms are bacteria that are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially-harmful, waterborne pathogens may be present or that a potential pathway exists through which contamination may enter the drinking water distribution system. We found coliform indicating the need to look for potential problems io water treatment or distribution. When this occurs, we are required to conduct assessments (s) to identify problems and to correct any problems that were found during these assessments.

During the past year we were required to conduct and completed 1 (one) Level 1 assessment. In addition, we were required to take and completed 1 (one) corrective action.

As you can see by the table, our system had no violations. We're proud that your drinking water meets or exceeds all Federal and State requirements. We have learned through our monitoring and testing that some contaminants have been detected however the EPA has determined that your water IS SAFE at these levels.

We are required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a monthly basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not our drinking water meets health standards. In an effort to ensure systems complete all monitoring requirements, MSDH now notifies systems of any missing samples prior to the end of the compliance period.

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. Our water system is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead. The Mississippi State Department of Health Public Health Laboratory offers lead testing. Please contact 601.576. 7582 if you wish to have your water tested.

All sources of drinking water are subject to potential contamination by substances that are naturally occurring or man made. These substances can be microbes, inorganic or organic chemicals and radioactive substances. All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. lmmunocompromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.

EPNCDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline 1.800.426.4791.

American Legion, members of Congress recognize National GI Bill Week

The American Legion hosted a reception at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C., June 20 to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, also known as the GI Bill of Rights.

The legislation enabled nearly 8 million World War II veterans to attend college or vocational school.

National Commander Denise H. Rohan was in attendance to commemorate the 1944 landmark legislation, as well as several members of Congress who recognized the week of June 18-22 as National GI Bill Commemoration Week. Attending the reception were Sens.

Tom Carper, Jim Inhofe and Jon Tester, ranking member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs; and Reps. Jody Hice, Clay Higgins and Phil Roe, chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

Rohan shared about The American Legion's investment in the GI Bill since its inception, and the benefits it has provided to America's veterans.

“Since the original GI Bill was introduced in 1944, millions of veterans have used these benefits to improve their lives and build their futures. The American Legion helped draft the original 1944 Servicemen’s Readjustment Act that fueled the Eisenhower-era post-war boom and the expansion of higher education and the middle class within American society,” Rohan said. “This is why The American Legion, many congressional leaders, and those who have benefitted from the GI Bill often refer to it as America’s ‘greatest legislation.’ The

American Legion continues to work diligently to ensure the GI Bill remains relevant to today’s generation of veterans. We thank Sen. Carper for his leadership in introducing (bipartisan) legislation creating a National GI Bill Week.”

Carper, a Legionnaire and Navy veteran who used the GI Bill to attend the University of Delaware following the Vietnam War, said, “The GI Bill changed the course of history.

Millions of returning World War II veterans enrolled in higher education and job training programs and helped usher in an era of broad economic growth in the United States. The GI Bill changed my life, too."

“Investing in a quality education for servicemembers today will pay dividends well into the future,” Tester said. “During GI Bill Week, we honor our veterans and recommit ourselves to ensure they can put their unique skillset and experience to use long after they hang up their uniforms.”

SECONDS, MINUTES, DAYS, WEEKS: TIMELY TRAUMA CARE SAVES MADISON MAN Ruth Cummins JACKSON, Miss. – Minutes after her husband Dan was viciously sliced by the propeller of his boat on Lake Caroline, Ann Smith wrapped her arms around him and prayed that it wouldn’t be his time.

It wasn’t.

“So many miracles,” she says of her husband’s journey of healing that began with his early afternoon accident April 24, 2017, on the neighborhood lake in Madison County.

Her prayers weren’t just answered at one of the docks, where Dan Smith fell out of his new boat after a wake unexpectedly jostled it.

They also were answered at the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s intensive care unit, and before that, in the hospital’s Emergency Department.

“They didn’t care who he was, or whether he had insurance or not. They didn’t even ask his name,” Smith said. “They took him straight to surgery.”

UMMC is the state’s only Level I trauma center, a designation awarded by the Mississippi State Department of Health. It offers advanced services, equipment and expertise to patients who have suffered traumatic injuries that’s not available at other facilities in Mississippi the Health Department has designated at Levels II-IV. Traumatically injured children and adults usually arrive by ambulance or in UMMC’s AirCare, the state’s most advanced medical helicopter transport. “We often get referred from other facilities the injuries that are complex or require subspecialty care,” said Dr. Alan Jones, professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

As a Level I trauma center, UMMC has a combination of physicians, surgeons and residents in subspecialty areas at the hospital 24/7.

“At a Level II hospital, they have to call in a trauma surgeon from home. They don’t necessarily have orthopaedic surgeons, or neurosurgeons,” Jones said.

In Dan Smith’s case, a complete trauma team swiftly reported to his operating room.

Among them: trauma surgeon Dr. Matthew Kutcher; plastic surgeon Dr. Benjamin McIntyre; thoracic surgeon Dr. Pierre de Delva; ENT physician Dr. Randall Jordan; ENT resident Dr. Laura House; surgery resident Dr. Wade Christopher; and anesthesiologist and critical care physician Dr. Hess Robertson.

“He had broken all of his ribs on the left side. You could see where the propeller hit him,” Kutcher said. “His vital signs were OK, but he had a bad critical care problem in that his left lung was not functioning. The force it took to break the bones was transmitted to his lungs.”

Thus began the Madison resident’s four-plus week stay at the Medical Center’s surgical intensive care unit.

“Dan was off, and we were going to take them out on the boat,” Ann said of her husband, a lawyer at the Mississippi Attorney General’s office.

Their boat was new, so Dan was being extra careful, said Ann, a decision support analyst with Forrest General Hospital’s Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services in Hattiesburg.

But, that day he hadn’t turned on the boat’s kill switch, which attaches to the driver’s belt and shuts off the engine if the driver falls out. Before the girls had a chance to board, the wake caused Dan to roll out of the boat.

“The motor propeller got his jaw and his lung,” Ann said.

“He was under water, and I didn’t know where he was,” Ann said. She ran to the lake’s clubhouse for help, then headed back and saw her husband. “He said, ‘I have lost a lot of blood. Look at this.’ He was talking about his chest. He said, ‘I’m weak.’

“I laid down on the pier and said, ‘I love you. Hold tight.’ Then he got his arms wrapped around my neck,” Ann recounted.

“I remember standing up in the shallow water, looking at my chest and thinking, ‘Lord, I guess this is it for me,’” Dan remembered. “Apparently, I was able to get to the pier, even though I don’t have a recollection. I can only answer that Jesus carried me. From that time, until about a month later, I have no memory.”

Help began to arrive. First responders and an ambulance rushed to the pier. A woman came from across the street to watch the grandchildren. A man turned off the boat’s engine. “Oh, my goodness. They were wonderful,” Ann said. “There were people all over, praying for Dan.” The first responders wasted no time summoning AirCare. “I remembered that UMMC was trauma care,” Ann said. “I remember saying to one of the first responders that they always carry you to the nearest hospital, and I asked where he would be carried. They said UMMC. I said, ‘Great!’ I knew he was bad, but I didn’t realize just how bad.”

AirCare left the Medical Center bound for Lake Caroline at 1:50 p.m., arriving at 2 p.m., then left with Dan at 2:18 p.m., arriving at UMMC at 2:26 p.m., said Stephen Houck, a former AirCare paramedic who now manages Mississippi Med-Com, the statewide emergency communications system at UMMC. AirCare has four helicopters, all staffed at minimum by a pilot, registered nurse and critical care paramedic.

“You’ve done all of your treatment en route that you can do,” Houck said. That can include procedures that only AirCare is qualified to do in the state: Insertion of chest tubes. Administration of Kcentra, a medicine that can stop profuse bleeding in certain patients by reversing anticoagulants. Placing arterial lines to monitor blood pressure by the second.

In the trauma room, “they want to know right then what happened. You get about two minutes to give your report, and then they hammer you with questions: What happened?

you think might be going on?” Houck said.

“It can be overwhelming, but we’re not overwhelmed. Everyone brings the worst of the worst here. That’s what makes our trauma center so unique.”

Critical care and prayer With no family yet at his side, Dan temporarily became “Unknown Aqua.” Emergency Department staff assign colors to patients who can’t immediately be identified.

When a traumatically injured person arrives at a Level I trauma center, Kutcher said, saving them is “not necessarily getting the right surgeon. It’s going to the place with the right resources.”

That includes a trauma team to compliment the trauma surgeon, who is “trained to take care of a little bit of everything,” Kutcher said.

“We are experts in stopping potentially fatal bleeding and resuscitating patients who are critically ill.”

Within minutes of Dan’s arrival, Kutcher said, he had a CT scan to assess the extent of his injuries. Just a few minutes later, trauma surgeons and other medical specialists, including plastic and thoracic surgeons, were in place in the OR. “It’s not a situation you have at many hospitals,” Kutcher said.

The next day in the surgical ICU, trauma and critical care physician Dr. Leon Sykes explained to the family why Dan needed not one, but two vents in order to breathe. “He had a hole in his left lung, and the air was escaping. He needed one vent to keep the left lung from collapsing, and one to keep the right lung going,” Ann said.

That night, the medical team called together a family conference, explaining that Dan’s condition was dire. Even so, Ann said, “I had a really strong peace that he would live. On Thursday, they allowed our ministers and elders to come in. They laid hands, prayed and anointed him with oil.”

They wondered if the impending wedding of their daughter, Sarah Smith Boyd, might need to take place in the ICU. The family bonded with the nursing staff, the residents, “even the security people in the waiting room,” Ann said. “We could not have asked for better hospitality and caring,” she said of nurses that included Kimberly Horn, Scott Hallman and Rachael Banks and nurse practitioner Christy Barrick.

And there were the miracles.

“When doctors said the only thing left to save him was the ECMO machine, we prayed and his lungs got a little better,” Sarah said.

“When doctors said he would go on dialysis, we prayed and his kidneys started working.

“When doctors said his left lung would be removed, we prayed and a blood clot disappeared and his lung started working again. When people feared he was too weak for rehab, we prayed and he walked 50 feet the first day.”

“From reviewing records and hearing from my family and doctors, I realize how blessed I am to have survived,” Dan said.

He was discharged from UMMC in early June to continue therapy. On June 10, Methodist Rehabilitation Center approved him to leave briefly to “walker” Sarah down the aisle. “I not only survived, but I was able to participate in the wedding less than seven weeks after the accident, including a dance with my daughter,” Dan said.

A year later, he continues to recover. His caregivers also include Dr. Ron Caloss, asso-

ciate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the School of Dentistry, who performed the first of several jaw reconstruction surgeries on May 7. “The Lord has placed us with the best of the best,” Ann said.

Dan has several messages he wants to convey. “If you are a boater, please take all safety measures seriously. If I had been wearing the kill switch, this probably wouldn’t have been a story,” he said.

“Support UMC when possible. They are excellent. Be thankful for every day. Most of us don’t really have bad days.

“If you don’t believe in miracles, I would like to have a conversation.”

Older Boomers Are The Most Satisfied Buyers Purchasing Forever Homes Older Boomers, buyers aged 63 to 71 years, made up 14 percent of all home buyers in 2017 according to the National Association of Realtors. The median age for this group was 66 years old and they were born between 1946 and 1954.

Within this group, they had the second largest share of single female buyers at 22 percent. Their primary reasons for purchasing a home, more than other generations, were the desire to live closer to friends and family (25 percent), followed by retirement (15 percent).

Combined, Older Boomers owned the highest share of investment (nine percent) and vacation (seven percent) properties. Equal to the Silent Generation, Older Boomers were the most likely to purchase homes in a small town (27 percent) and in a rural area (11 percent).

Compared to other buyers, they moved the greatest distances at a median of 30 miles.

Older Boomers were the least likely to purchase homes for the quality of school districts or convenience to schools. Rather, they purchased homes for the quality of the neighborhood and for convenience to friends and family. This age group found commuting costs as well as windows, doors, and siding installation equally important. Overall, Older Boomers were very likely not to make compromises on the home when they purchased (47 percent), citing that they were never moving and it was their forever home (27 percent).

In their home search process, Older Boomers were very likely to drive by homes and neighborhoods and they were the least likely to find the paperwork a difficult step. Older Boomers were the most satisfied with the home buying process at 93 percent.

Older Boomers’ income was below the median income of all buyers ($88,800) at just $80,700 and they purchased homes at a median price of $239,200. Older Boomers were the most likely to use the proceeds from the sale of a primary residence as the source of their down payment (56 percent) and from an IRA account (five percent). They were the largest group of home buyers to save for a down payment for more than two years (30 percent).

Older Boomers were the third largest share of home sellers at 22 percent in 2017.

The median age for an Older Boomer seller was 67 years. They had the second lowest median income at $80,700. They were the most likely to sell to be closer to friends and family (28 percent) and for retirement (19 percent), and at a median distance of 39 miles from the home they recently purchased. They were also very likely to sell when they wanted to (94 percent). They receive the highest equity at 46 percent and second highest dollar value at $86,000.

The Aged Heroes of the Helicopter

the UH-1 'Huey' helicopter in Vietnam The other week I had the opportunity to go to a PHI Inc (used to be Petroleum Helicopters Inc.) company reunion in Lafayette, LA, sponsored by the founder and owner's wife, Carroll Suggs. She sold the company in 2001. It is the company that I worked at for 43 years (1973) and retired in 2016. While I was shuffling around visiting my old comrades, the average age was probably 65-75 years old, it dawned on me that many of these individuals were the pioneers of the helicopter world. We know that humankind has been trying to fly for eons and that even Leonardo da Vinci made sketches of his concept of a flying helicopter over 500 years ago, although he never followed through. Then the Germans designed and flew the first practical helicopter but it production was hampered by the allies during WWII. Then along came Igor Sikorsky, with his ideas and brilliance and go the first production helicopter in the late 30's. Then the helicopter was used in the Korean War but it came to be during the Vietnam era. Nothing defines that war more so than the helicopter.

PHI had its beginning in 1949 providing support for the seismograph crews and eventually the offshore oil industry in the Gulf of Mexico and around the world. During my tenure and in the 70's and early 80's PHI was the largest helicopter operator in the world. We had over 1,000 pilots and 500 aircraft. In fact, the only two entities that had more helicopters than PHI were the US Army and the Russian Army. It is difficult to understand that during that time helicopter aviation was really just starting to make inroads into the business and government world. So during those years PHI flew around the world in at least 45 countries.

Looking around the restaurant and seeing all the grey hair, the 'misshapen' bodies, the limps, and slowness and yet understanding that these were the men who pioneered an industry. At that time most of our pilots were combat trained and spent their time in Vietnam and survived. We even had a large contingent of Vietnamese pilots who escaped the chaos and came to the US and were flying for PHI. These guys have stories that would fill years of TV specials or sitcoms.

They did the first mid-air recovery of a suborbital missile payload, flew the Queen of England when she visited Texas, flew for the US State Department for the Camp David Peace Agreement between Egypt and Israel, flew for many government agencies and have helped several countries around the world in times of need and disaster, to name just a few. And since 1981 they fly EMS or aero medical flights around the world, including the aircraft at UMMC and three other bases in Mississippi. Today there are about 26,500 civilian helicopters and about 29,700 military helicopters in service. There were about 12,000 helicopters that served in Vietnam and of those well over 5,000 were lost to combat and accidents Several of our comrades were no longer with us and in time we will also leave this earth, hopefully a little better than when we first started flying the helicopter.

Now that the Summit has ended we are given some hope of a Nuclear free Korean Peninsula.

However, watching the Liberal New media, they just couldn't give President Trump an acknowledgement of a success. They were saying how the North Koreans had as many flags as we did on the stage - tell me one Official State gathering where that is not so. Even one news organization was complaining about the meal that Premiere Kim was eating as opposed to his citizenry. And then the kicker of how can he negotiate with such a human rights violator.

Did we condemn FDR or Truman for meeting with Joseph Stalin, and he killed millions of his people.

How about Nixon and Mao Zedong, who killed millions of his people, and then the Castro regime with former President Obama. Of course, the proof is in the pudding, and I will wait and see what actually comes of the summit, but it will take time and patience.

Grilling safety tips from the burn center at Merit Health Central

Don’t invite burns to your summer cookout. Here are some tips provided by the JMS Burn Center at Merit Health Central to help you avoid burn injury:

Make sure the grill is at least 10 feet away from other objects, like houses or bushes.

Check your gas grill for leaks with soapy water. Spray on gas line connections, and if it bubbles, there's trouble.

•

Never start a gas grill with the lid closed, use one indoors or leave one unattended.

•

Use extra care with lighter fluid. Keep the container away from the grill, don't spill it and never add to hot coals.

•

Never, ever use gasoline as a starter fluid for charcoal grills.

•

Childproof lighters are not child-safe lighters. They can still cause fires and burns.

•

Always wear short sleeves or tight-fitting clothing while grilling

• •

Use cooking utensils with long handles.

There is a right way to dispose of hot coals: Douse with water, then stir. Rinse. Repeat.

•

Clean your grill! Don’t let grease or fat build up, as they can cause flare ups. Check gas lines for blockages, too!

Always, always, always shut off the propane tank valve when not in use. Always follow these tips to have a safe and happy grilling season!

By Carol L. Kohan America is a bit surprised over the Media News; A School Shooting and a Royal Wedding. Young men and women spend time thinking, praying, debating over who to marry and hope their choice is till death do they part!

On the other side of the scale; young men and women spend their time participating in lockdowns, drills and walking into school house doors fortified with bullet proof glass.

In fact, the research team at Yale concluded that gun use spreads like a virus due to social affiliation with others.

What happened to our discipline policies at the schools: teachers have no authority and parents are very lax and complacent, some parents pay more attention to their cell phones than to their lonely child who needs a loving embrace.

BRING PRAYER BACK TO SCHOOLS! It’s time we seek God in all His righteousness.

“If my people which are called by my name would humble themselves, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sins, and heal the lands.” 2 Chronicles 7: 14 The School Shootings are shocking to our students; this isn’t the norm for our country.

One solution by a 12th grade student sounds enlightening: “Before school, after school and during lunch period, there should be chillspaces for students to de-stress, talk to a counselor and get themselves ready for the day.”

December 15, 1791, the Constitution of the United States adopted these words: “A wellregulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the fight of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

Changes to the Second Amendment are not needed. Changes are needed regarding our gun laws.

Indeed, our government could learn from other countries like Japan. Japan puts its citizens through a rigorous set of tests which includes a mandatory all-day class. From there, they

must take a written test, have a 95% accuracy on a shooting-range test, a mental health evaluation and a background check.

A common misconception in our country is that we would be safer without guns. I realize there needs to be an official improvement to gun policy, however laws will never end the violence that has come to destroy our educational system. But without laws, we are faced with the problem of domestic terrorists and unashamed maniacs. {excerpts from Wash.

I found some interesting data from the National Survey of Children’s Health for ages 6 to 17, researchers found a 20 percent increase in diagnoses of anxiety between 2007 and 2012. Depression: Teen depression can be present along with anxiety so it is best to visit a mental health specialist.

Parents and teachers must be aware of these seven signs of Anxiety to help teens to get through this period of transitioning from childhood to adulthood successfully.

Psychology Professor Maryam Kia-Keating, at the University of California who studies childhood trauma presented an example of trauma; Children as young as 3 and 4 are now participating in lockdown drills, which increase the concept that violence can happen anywhere and at any time. The professor is correct on establishing her thoughts about violence. A reporter for the Washington Post asked a student at Santa Fe High School if she thought a shooting could not happen at her school. The student replied, “I’ve always kind of felt like eventually it was going to happen here too.”

Professor Kia-Keating believes violence is “shattering our beliefs in a safe and just world.

In some ways, we’re just surviving by becoming a little bit numb, but it’s not a desirable outcome. It’s going to have a very bad ripple effect down the line and even right now.”

Pope Francis says that people must be agents of their own development and thank God the Florida high schooler have taken that message to heart. The fact that they are speaking up as boldly as they are, may be the turning point on gun policy in the United States. It would be nice to believe that Parkland gun massacre be the one that changes the momentum on gun

policy. If we pray to be instruments of God’s peace, maybe we can start by not letting our surviving children down.

In 1962, the Supreme Court ruled “Schoolsponsored prayer in public schools in unconstitutional.” The majority held that “schoolsponsored prayer violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.”

Along with the Pastors in Parkland, Florida, I believe the solution to the violence and shootings in schools; Prayer would solve the problem and become a solution to violence. Also, the church can be a consistent voice for the promotion of peace at home and around the world as strong advocates of prayer.

Nelson Mandela stated, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

Apparently, bullying and cyberbullying are the most prevalent forms of violence in schools with detrimental effects. Students who are bullied are more likely to experience social isolation, health problems, anxiety and depression. Both bullies and targets of bullying are more likely to have increased suicidal tendencies. Moreover, it has been proven recent neurological studies show that “empathy” from others are crucial to easing distress.

It is now the darkest hour in our United States. The only power that can help us in this dreadful hour is PRAYER. Pray with me now this prayer written by Pope Pius XII: “Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, in this tragic hour of the World’s history, we entrust and consecrate ourselves to they Immaculate Heart, our only Refuge, our Hope, our Salvation. Have pity on the World, torn by the most terrible conflict, burning with the fires of hate – victim of its own sins. May thy Heart be moved at the sight of so much ruin, pain and sorrow. We consecrate to thy Maternal Heart our persons, our families, our Country – the whole of humanity. Protect and save us!

O Heart of Mary, source of true love, fill our selfish hearts with divine charity and with that true brotherly love without which there can never be peace.
