NAN GOLDIN AND MICKALENE THOMAS SELECTED AS THE YEAR’S MOST INFLUENTIAL ARTISTS We’re pleased to announce that Nan Goldin and Mickalene Thomas, part of Henzel Studio’s artist program HENZEL STUDIO COLLABORATIONS are selected as two of the most infuential artists of 2019. According to Artsy; ”The year’s most influential artists drove unprecedented crowds to museums, incited heated debates, spurred Instagram sensations, and set splashy auction records. Some harnessed innovative digital technologies, while others took centuries-old craft techniques to new heights.” Nan Goldin was this fall named the second-most powerful person in the art world by ArtReview. Thomas continued to be a force within the art world, as well, with solo shows at Galerie Nathalie Obadia in Paris during FIAC, at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, and a striking survey, “Better Nights,” at The Bass, which opened the week of Art Basel in Miami Beach. WORKSHOP UGO BASSI ISOLA / NEW SIGNATURE COLLECTION The collection by Calle Henzel is based on his work on paper combining various techniques such as collage, painting and his signature free-form shape. The final design characteristics are attributed to a mixture of abstract color fields, studio waste, cardboard scraps, irregular surfaces and raw and untreated surfaces. Different materials and sculpted heights on the pile are used to recreate the originals. Calle Henzel developed the collection over a course of five years, the first drafts were outlined in a studio located at Ugo Bassi, Isola, Milan. ONE OF THE MOST PROGRESSIVE LUXURY RUG BRANDS IN THE WORLD Henzel Studio’s ethos is based on the artistic practice of Calle Henzel, founder and creative director. Over the past twenty years, he has translated his artistic practice as painter and collage artist into the medium at hand, positioning Henzel Studio as one of the most progressive luxury rug brands in the world. The organic and artistic process of Calle Henzel has been the driving force in the development of Henzel Studio’s designs. He has over the years in an uncompromised fashion challenged the traditional conventions of subject matter, shape, finishings and special treatments as a result of painstaking research that includes vintage treatments, intricate surface compositions and even natural erosion – methodologies that further blur the distinction between art and design. His work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions, group exhibitions and public installations worldwide. He has over the years cultivated an independent standing and business model that has allowed him uncompromised artistic freedom. His practice is a continuous reflection of what is experienced and perceived through subjective cultural impulses. The unique characteristics of his pieces lend a contemporary and enduring quality to his work, blending the abstract and figurative, often searching for a constant interplay between the sublime and the intense. His organic and experimental process, which involves elements of intuition, chance and accident, is something that continues to breathe into the making of his art. Calle Henzel has collaborated with some of the most prominent names in contemporary art and artists foundations including Tom of Finland Foundation and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

HENZEL STUDIO COLLABORATIONS / HERITAGE

Since the launch of ’Henzel Studio Collaborations’ at Barneys New York Madison Avenue in 2014 during Frieze Art Fair, Henzel Studio has developed art rugs with over thirty contemporary artists including Richard Prince, Helmut Lang, Jack Pierson, Nan Goldin, Scott Campbell, Richard Phillips, Marilyn Minter, Mickalene Thomas and Anselm Reyle. Via ’Henzel Studio Heritage’ extensive collections have also been developed in collaboration with artist estates, that to date include Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Tom of Finland Foundation. Free to disregard design movements and related principles and rules, the featured artists were invited to freely and seamlessly translate their work and artistic ethos into the media at hand, exploring shape, volume, and finishing, where practicality was secondary to concept. This creative brief allows all artists to embrace the outcome as part of their body of work. “Art rugs have been around for quite some time in various forms, and some of the most prominent artists including Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana, Mike Kelley, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Leger, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, and Pablo Picasso have all turned to the media at some point in their oeuvre. However, rather than look back, we’re looking to encapsulate facets of contemporary art and work with a curated group of artists that simultaneously express their ethos within a broad yet defined scope. Having more than thirty leading contemporary artists collaborate in this capacity makes Henzel Studio Collaborations an unprecedented program, even though the artisan practices remind us that the possibility has always been there.” Joakim Andreasson, curator for Henzel Studio

All rugs are designed in collaboration with Calle Henzel. ’Henzel Studio Collaborations’ has in the past had solo exhibitions at venues that include Barneys Madison Avenue (New York), Colette Gallery (Paris), The New (Los Angeles), and Joyce (Hong Kong).
