Bishop Wordsworth's School PITCH IN Sports Campaign

April 2022

INTRODUCTION Sport, and the significant social, mental and physical advantages it brings, has been woven into the very fabric of Bishop Wordsworth’s Grammar School since its foundation in 1890. We have a ‘sport for all’ philosophy at Bishop’s and weekly sporting activity is part of the core curriculum for every pupil. There are numerous opportunities beyond the curriculum for our pupils to get involved in, and benefit from, participation in sport – from competitive fixtures to enrichment activities and lunchtime clubs to after-school training sessions. I am proud of the way we cater for a range of sporting abilities – from aspiring athletes who represent their county and country, to those who just want to enjoy a game with their friends. I am keen to support our PE Department in delivering the best possible sports training and opportunities for pupils of all ages and that is why we are launching a fundraising appeal for new sports facilities at Bishop’s. To achieve this, we need your help. If you are able to support our fundraising campaign, I would be hugely grateful – and so would countless current and future Wordsworthians. Thank you in advance for your help. Dr Stuart Smallwood Head Master

My Department and I are committed to ensuring all pupils develop sporting skills at the appropriate level and have a positive attitude towards sport and physical activity for life. Apart from the benefits that sport brings young people in terms of physical activity, confidence, teamwork, resilience, discipline and mental wellbeing, I want to encourage all pupils at Bishop's to get involved and try new things, even if that means taking themselves out of their comfort zone. I believe that by doing so, pupils can discover for themselves passions which they didn’t think possible and talents they didn’t even know they had. The pupils at Bishop's have access to superb coaching provision and we are looking to build upon this by providing them with the enhanced facilities that they need to play and train all year-round. Thank you for your support. Richard Demain-Griffiths Director of Sport

MULTI USE GAMES AREA (MUGA) Our PITCH IN campaign has been launched to raise funds to build a fully enclosed, multi-use games area (MUGA) at the Britford Lane sports ground, which will offer a significant increase in facilities provision. We have not upgraded our sports facilities since the addition of the Sports Hall in 2004, yet pupil numbers have increased by 248 in the last 5 years and are expected to rise again next year. An increase in pupil numbers has resulted in the wear and tear of our playing fields at Britford Lane and there is currently not enough indoor space to facilitate the varied sporting programme. The welcome introduction of girls into the Sixth Form has led to expansion of our sports provision, including women-only sports such as netball, lacrosse, women’s rugby, women’s cricket and women’s football. A MUGA will allow our pupils to have enjoyment and benefit from exercise on a surface which can be used throughout the year. Integrated court markings on the safety surface will allow multiple sports to be practised in the same area, making this a hugely versatile space for all year groups that can change purpose on a daily basis. Being able to host several different PE activities on one area will have big space saving benefits for the school whilst extending the programme of sports which we can offer. We will also have the added benefit of the opportunity for opening up the facility to local community groups such as sports clubs, summer sports camps providers and primary schools. The new 40 metre x 28 metre MUGA will include the following features: 5 retractable cricket lanes for bowling and batting practice Skills practice for team sports such as rugby, lacrosse, hockey and football A netball court A tennis court A 5-aside football pitch Space for general fitness training and PE activities

We want to increase participation and inspire more boys and girls to play cricket at Bishop’s. The proposed cricket-based MUGA will provide an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) approved surface that provides the required bounce and encouragement of turn for the modern game of cricket yet, thanks to retractable netting, can be quickly and easily transformed into a pitch suitable for other sports. Fully enclosed tunnel netting systems in high quality knotted netting 3.6m wide bays which are 4m high and 24m long Steel uprights sunk into concrete which allow the wires to be tensioned across play Unique torque-winch which allows tension to be consistent across all bays Net locking system which allows Nets to be secured from ground level with no need for ropes

FUNDING AND TIMING The MUGA project will cost £200,000 in total. We want to get our project underway as soon as possible so that pupils can benefit from the new facilities. Our aim is to begin construction at the end of 2022 so that the MUGA is ready for use in early 2023.

WHY DO WE NEED TO FUNDRAISE? As you will be aware, significant cuts have been made within the public sector, including education. Our own budget, as a state school, has always been tight and this has been exacerbated by the cuts. If we are to build a new MUGA then we must raise the money from within our own community. We are asking governors, parents, Old Wordsworthians and other friends of the school to help us raise the £200,000 we need.

Sport at BWS helped me develop my overall fitness and mindset. I was lucky enough to represent the school in rugby and gained some outstanding coaching and support. This helped me to get selected for England Rugby Under-20s and I now play for a premiership rugby team, Harlequins, of which I'm extremely proud. A MUGA would be a fantastic addition to the sporting facilities at Bishop’s - I wish we’d had one when I was at the school!
