town and he credits Canton for shaping his values. “Everything I am I owe to growing up in Canton. I learned hard work, selflessness, community, and caring about others from living there. I was so lucky to grow up in a place and time that valued helping each other and friendship way over social status or material goods.” Yet, Matt was ready to go, to “move the needle” as he would say, and he eagerly jumped at the chance to teach and coach basketball at a school in Harlingen, Texas. He stepped off his painting ladder, and with a small advance, drove off sight unseen to begin a new chapter in a Texas border town. Coach Herting spent 7 years in Texas, immersed in a culture that resembled something more Mexican than traditional American. Eventually, he decided it was time to move on and, once again, Coach Herting took a leap of faith. That leap brought Matt Herting to Bishop Verot. Coach Herting quickly became an iconic figure and beloved teacher at Bishop Verot. Colorful, brash, and flamboyant, he’s a fan favorite at Spellamania, where he’s entered the gym in wigs, on ropes, and in costumes that, well, you’d have to see to believe because Matt Herting doesn’t do anything halfway. He gives 100% every single time. That’s especially true when he opens his heart to someone in need. And he’s got a heart bigger than the Midwestern sky. Mr. Herting is a man of action, a Pied Piper of good deeds. When he goes all in, he takes Viking nation right along with him. Two years ago, he learned a student was about to undergo surgery for the removal of a brain tumor. It
took all of one week for Mr. Herting to collect letters from this young man’s favorite pro-players and coaches, offering him words of encouragement and autographed memorabilia. He organized an after school pep rally to present these items and 600 students showed up. Last year, when one of our students was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and his treatment posed a financial hardship, Mr. Herting organized the largest garage sale our area has ever seen. The gym was not only filled wall to wall with donated items for sale, it was full of volunteers and community members, some only stopping in to make a donation. Mr. Herting has that effect.
He’s consistent when it comes to caring for our own and, in doing so, sends a strong message of faith and community to our entire student body. He calls it “chex mix”, but his love for Verot is the epitome of being many parts, but one body. Our students recognize his servant’s heart, which is why Mr. Herting has been honored with the much coveted “Christ, the Teacher” award. This award is chosen only by students, in recognition of the teachers they feel mirror the character of Christ. Mr. Herting is life in living color. He’ll don fur and beads. He’ll lead BISHOP VEROT ALUMNI MAGAZINE
the student body in a charge at pep rallies or at karaoke night. He’ll take the stage in outrageous costumes or hang from a wrecking ball, but when he steps on the basketball court, Coach Herting is the very picture of composed professionalism. His impressive sense of strategy and intricate knowledge of the game made him one of the most respected coaches in Southwest Florida. Over the course of his 17 year career at Verot, he has amassed 300 wins, earned 9 District titles, advanced to 6 Regionals, and made 1 State Final Four appearance. He has given our somewhat unlikely school a respected name in the basketball community. He’s sent dozens of athletes on to colleges to continue their basketball careers. He has cultivated relationships with basketball programs and elite coaches all over the country and was instrumental in forming the Southwest Florida Basketball Association, which teams together area coaches to advocate for their sport and their athletes. He has led our basketball program with impeccable vision. When the winter basketball season began, we commemorated a significant landmark in Coach Herting’s career as Head Boys’ Basketball Coach at Bishop Verot. On November 19, 2015 Coach Herting notched his 300th win with the BV program. We invite our supporters, parents, alumni and students to be a part of this year-long celebration - a celebration of a career landmark, a celebration of spirit. Check out our 2015-2016 Boys Basketball schedule and help us make this season one to remember. BV
