3rd Year Dwelling in Oporto Porto, Portugal

This 3rd year exercise focused mainly on collective housing. We were asked to design a complex of residential buildings in an important centre of the city – Rotunda da Boavista – between Rem Koolhaas’s Casa da Música and Eduardo Souto de Moura’s subway station. Thereby we started from urban planning, we learned optimized ways to combine mixed programs and to organize the relationship between public and private spaces. In an advanced phase we were encouraged to develop one of the buildings in a detail level. The common gallery organization of the building presents as a new and more informal way of living, directed essentially to students or young couples. This principal such as the main construction material (exposed concrete) and the use of colour tries to ensure the cosmopolitanism suggested by the two new icon buildings.

4th Year A museum for the city, Matosinhos, Portugal

The 4th year exercise consisted on designing a contemporary art museum for the city of Matosinhos. The urban grid of the city is very regular and to accentuate that the project’s matrix grid extends that same regularity of the city. The building site integrates a pre-existent diagonal, a disable railway that should be respected according to the local law. The concept of the building is clear: form follows function. Its evident the pure transformation of the organization into a constructed form. The space should be as neutral as it can be, so it would be able to embrace a great variety of contents and ways of exposition. A tectonic attitude reinforces the purity of the forms; the real veracity of construction is also the museum aesthetics.

5th Year Hotel and Public Space Buenos Aires, Argentina

This 5th year exercise (that I took in PUC – Santiago de Chile) intends to demonstrate the importance of the architecture in the continuous design of the city. The major concept focuses on a “kneecap” solution as a way to join the old and the new Bs As. This is urban acupuncture; with the minimum architecture (minimum building) transform the maximum of the city. A three building complex delimits an intimate place but at the same time it creates a space that dialogues with the surroundings. The new place goes against the old city plot – closed blocks – but then again doesn’t copy the new way of urban planning – a free city plot with its consequents residual spaces.

Pladur Competition Oporto Tourism Office Porto, Portugal Colaboration with: Sofia Rangel, Tiago Trigo

In the 2010 Innovation on Pladur competition we were asked to work in a typical Oporto lot with the main purpose of rehabilitation and revitalization of the city centre. Our general concept was to raise a volume that in its whole shows a “typical� Oporto house unity though its interior reveals a different typology - a lot more flexible, allowing diverse approaches to that new city space. The use of Pladur pannels (movable and acustic pannels) is essential achieving that interior flexibility and innovation - the main concept of the entire competition.

Eduardo Souto de Moura e Joaquim Portela Competition for the Urban Redevelopment and City Hall headquarters buildings, 2nd Prize Bragança, Portugal

This to 2010 Souto de Moura Competition for Bragança city is an Urban Redevelopment of the Forte de S. João de Deus area and City Hall headquarters Buildings. It’s a large project that solves different problems in different scales. The suggested masterplan includes the refurbishment of the City Hall building, the construction of Technical Support Buildings, new Housing Buildings for the city, a School and an Auditorium. I chose to show this last one building since I had the great pleasure to be responsible for its design and specialties coordination.

Eduardo Souto de Moura e Joaquim Portela Jewish Museum Braganรงa, Portugal

Located in the historic center of the city of Braganรงa in Portugal, the project required the extension and conversion of the Center for the Interpretation of the jewish culture into the Center of Contemporary Art (CCA). The use of new materials in the recuperation of the old building allowed to maintain the facades and replicate the volume in order to reach areas and ceiling heights suitable for the program. In the ground floor of the extension building are located the connection to the CCA and a Tourist Information Center; on the remaining floors the Museum itself. The vertical accesses were coupled to the service facade on the back of the building which limits the patio destined to the technical facade.

Meier Hug Architekten Competition for Dwelling in B端lach, 1st Prize ZH, Switzerland

This project for the town of B端lach not only wants to solve a housing problem but also to create a space for the community support. The two four storage buildings are positioned strategically creating an outside central space of semipublic use. This complex reunites different types of families as well as an intergenerational structure. The base of the West building, offers a series of services such as supermarket or a day care centre. And the base of the East building is an assisted living residence, where wealth care is provided. The first building has a typical vertical distribution and proffers a variety of typologies for single and multiple families. The second one has a horizontal distribution, more suitable for senior residence; since they can be more aware of their neighbours, reinforcing the idea of community vigilance.

Meier Hug Architekten Apartments in Oberrieden ZH, Switzerland

The plot covers a hillside on the left bank of Lake Zurich; it is connected to the city by the upper side, and at the lowest point borders the railway line. The main guidelines were very clear: the apartments should be “luxurious” but “family friendly” and they should be able to fully benefit from the extremely attractive prospect location. The volumetry tries to make a statement without disrespect the various building and zoning regulations of the municipality. The building form is compact to minimize its footprint in a typical green “house with garden” neighbourhood. Its angular shape derives from the desire to provide every apartment overlooks to the natural environment and it also helps to minimize the sound impact coming from the railway that runs along the lakeshore. Also the sheltered patios intend to respond to the problem of a beautiful but not always silent surrounding.

Meier Hug Architekten Competition for Senior Housing in Richterswill, 1st Prize ZH, Switzerland

The aim of this competition is the project of a senior residence and Nursing home for the city of Richterswill. The program covers as well a dementia unity with daily nursing care, a cafeteria, a canteen and spaces for specific physical and mental therapy. The concept of the building is essential about integration in the city’s grammar architecture. The building is composed of two parts, as two houses connected, which allows achieving a well-connected infrastructure without a big and compact construction. The terrace in the last floor between the “two houses” is a central an essential space for a healthy live of the residences and the supporting staff.

Meier Hug Architekten Competition for Complex Avaloq, 1st Prize ZH, Switzerland

This project consists in the development of a big complex of residential and office buildings. The client is a big pharmaceutical company - Avaloq - and they intended to renovate the old headquarters and also enlarge the Avaloq quartier offering residential and common spaces. The new office building has the same structure of the old building, but the organization of the space is more open and suitable to the new business demands. The office units are essentially open to a big common space assuring a better connection between the diferente sectors of the company. A new auditorium was also a very important part of the project design.

Meier Hug Architekten Senior Apartments Sonnenhof, Execution Project Wil, Switzerland

This project presents a complex of apartments for the elderly. The main goal was to integrate a new building related to an existing nursing home. Due to the proximity with this structure, the new volume should be a powerfull statement of health and good living, The building intends to bring life and joy to the comunity and assure the service of an easy and pleasant day-to-day life to its senior residents. The execution project consisted, as usually, in the development of all the technical documents and detailed plans required for the correct execution of the project. For a period of 8 months we developed an intense research focused essentially on the materialisation of the architectural concept: we aimed for the perfect fusion of classic and cozy materials with contemporary and minimal design.

Meier Hug Architekten Competition for Dwelling in Vรถgelwinkel, 3rd Prize Baar, Switerzland

120 apartments aimed to house mainly families and also to generate a large public green space in order to promote the better integration within the community. It was avoided building separated single family houses, allowing to free a significant portion of the terrain. The adjacent land is a protected area of agricultural use and is connected to a large forest. The implementation of the buildings is thus aimed to let this green space flow in and to offer, both residents and the community a leisure space for all. The main challenge of this project were the strict laws and building regulations of the city, seeking to help maintain community identity. Despite the implementation strategy being quite distint to the current one, mostly composed of singles family houses, the environment of family life and of direct contact with Nature is thus assured.

Durch die Gliederung der Wohnhäuser entstehen vielseitige Überecksituationen, welche die Qualitäten der unterschiedlichen Aussenräume in den Wohnungen über diagonale Blickbeziehungen akzentuieren. Diese diagonalen Querungen sind auch auf der Ebene der Siedlungserschliessung bestimmend. Insbesondere im Bereich der Aegeristrasse eröffnet sich für den Besucher und Spaziergänger einen weiträumigen Einblick durch die Anlage bis hinauf zum Waldrand entlang der Landschaftsschutzzone.

Das Grundstück Vogelwinkel ist Teil einer Raumkammer zwischen Aegeri- und Himmelrichstrasse sowie der bewaldeten Hügelkette des Ruggeren. Die Lage am Siedlungsrand der Ortschaft Baar, verbunden mit der Aussichtslage in die Weiträumigkeit der Zuger Landschaft, rückt die Frage des Verhältnisses von Siedlung zur Landschaft ins Zentrum der städtebaulichen Einordnung: die Attraktivität des Siedlungsrandes mit räumlichem Bezug zu den Landwirtschaftsflächen und Waldsaum wird durch die grossräumige Öffnung der Siedlungsfigur bestimmend – die Landschaftsschutzone verzahnt sich mit dem Siedlungsraum.

Umgebung Im Dialog mit der hangseitig anschliessenden Umgebung schafft die Bebauungsstruktur eine offen fliessende Landschaft, die eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Aussenräume mit spezifischen Qualitäten umfasst, die wesentlich zur Identität für die Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner beitragen. Zentrale Elemente und öffentliche Treffpunkte für die Siedlung und das Quartier sind die zwei Plätze: der Eingangsplatz entlang der Aegeristrasse schafft mit Wasserbecken, Spielplatz und Sitzplätzen einen Aufenthaltsort, der das neue Quartier mit der bestehenden Struktur verbindet. Der ruhigere und grünere, innenliegende Kiesplatz erhält über den grünen Keil, der sich aus dem offenen Gelände in das Areal schiebt, eine besondere Blickbeziehung zur angrenzenden Hügellandschaft. Zusammen schaffen die zwei Plätze einen stark nutzungsorientierten Freiraum. Gestaltungselemente sind Mauer- und Sitzelemente, die ineinander übergehen, extensive Blumenwiesen und Bäume.

Die Bebauungsstruktur verweigert durch diese Setzung die Gesetzmässigkeiten der Arrondierung – vielmehr schafft die Siedlungsfigur, geprägt durch die Grosszügigkeit der gemeinsamen Weite zur unverbaubaren Landschaft im Osten, eine für die Bewohner identitätsstiftende, hohe Wohnqualität. Im Gegenzug eröffnen sich an der Aussichtslage vom Waldweg für den Spaziergänger nebst der eindrücklichen Weitsicht in die Zuger Seelandschaft einen in die Tiefe der Siedlungsstruktur gestaffelten Blick – die Landschaft fliesst förmlich in den Siedlungsraum. Dieser städtebauliche Ansatz führt zu einer baulichen Verdichtung entlang der Parzellen des bestehenden Quartiers. An dessen Rändern, unmittelbar zur Nachbarschaft, knüpft die Grundfigur an die Freiräume der umgebenden Gartenanlagen an: durch die variierende, von der Nachbarschaft zurückweichende Abwicklung der Baukörper entstehen lokale Binnenräume, die eine angemessene Distanz zur bestehenden Bebauung und Strassenräume schafft. Die Siedlung im Vogelwinkel wird über diese «gärtnerischen Binnenräume» im Quartier eingebettet.

Das eingewebte Wegenetz verbindet die umgehenden Strassen und Plätze rollstuhlgängig mit den Zugängen. Die grüne Vorzone entlang der Aegeristrasse beinhaltet Erschliessungs- und Entsorgungsfunktionen, wie Veloabstellmöglichkeiten, UFC, Wendemöglichkeit und Zufahrt zur Einstellhalle. Mauerelemente zonieren die privaten Terrassen und die halb-öffentlichen Grünvorzonen und definieren die Zugänge zu den Gebäuden. Es entsteht eine klare Zuordnung der Siedlungsumgebung zur Landschaft.

Die in der Grundfigur und Höhenlage gestaffelten Baukörper ermöglichen eine behutsame Eingliederung in die Hanglage und eine der bestehenden, heterogenen Bebauungsstruktur angemessene Massstäblichkeit. Master FAUP Concrete Architecture “Como uma pedra líquida: - o betão armado, Abstract o corpo e a arquitectura.”

The reinforced concrete – also known as artificial cluster (obtained by mixing cement, sand, gravel and water) applied on a metallic armour5 – is the most used material in the world: the production of cement is estimated to be around 1.7 billion tonnes per year, enough to produce over 6 billion m3/year, or at least 1m3 per person/year6, and the trend is towards increasing these numbers. As a matter of fact, with the exception of water, man consumes no other material in such tremendous quantities.7 Nevertheless, despite the fact that reinforced concrete has allowed the creation of a building system that responds to both the demands of industrial and commercial production (as well as the growing infrastructural and habitational needs) in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, its exacerbated presence does not imply a consensus on the characteristics of this "new" material. Its versatility in addressing both structurally as well as formally and aesthetically renders the reinforced concrete the most complex material and system ever used, that has risen a large numbers of creative interpretations, proving that indeed there is no such thing as a single, legitimate concrete architecture.8 It is this paradoxical condition of concrete – the apparently even material that is a heterogeneous composite, the one that meets both the compressive and tensile, the one that can be a frame, a wall or a structural membrane, the one that instigated the detachment between architects and engineers, between artistic and technical work, the one that can be built in situ or be precasted, the one that may depend on hand or machine, ultimately the one that can, in its most brutal state, trigger a prodigious sensitivity – that we propose to explore in this paper.
