The Shmuz on the Parsha

Rabbi Ben Tzion Shafier

EMOR

Your Gashmius Is My Ruchnius

“And when you gather the cuttings of your land, do not cut the corner of your field when you harvest, and the fallings of your harvesting do not gather. For the poor man and the convert, you should leave them.” — Vayikra 23:22 The Torah reading on the first days of Sukkos outlines the yomim tovim of year and their sacrifices. In the middle of the detailing of all the holidays, the Torah repeats the mitzvah of leket, shikchah, and peah, the commandment to leave a portion of your harvest for the poor. Rashi is troubled by the placement of this in the middle of the descriptions of the holidays. He explains that the Torah is teaching us if someone gives leket, shikchah, and peah to a poor person properly, it is as if he built the Holy Temple and brought all of his sacrifices there. This Rashi is very difficult to understand. What possible comparison is there between this simple mitzvah of leaving a portion to the poor man and the colossal mitzvah of bringing all of the sacrifices on each holiday? Even more, how can giving charity be equal to the building of the Bais Hamikdash? The Heart of Our Nation The center point of each moed is the Avodah done in the Bais Hamikdash. It is difficult for us to imagine the holiness invested and the spiritual accomplishments attained when the korbonos are brought. A kohain is a holy Jew who spends his life dedicated towards spirituality. From his earliest youth, he is trained in learning to eventually join the ranks of the Torah teachers in Israel. Only when he is twenty-

4

five is he ready to begin his apprenticeship as a kohain. He will spend five years learning, preparing, practicing, and then he may finally serve, but only for the next twenty years. As there were thousands of kohanim, each kohain would only get to do limited parts of the actual service, and even that for only two weeks out a year. For each yom tov, a team of hundreds of the holiest people of the generation were involved in the preparations and the actual service. With the levi’im singing, and the rest of the Jewish nation waiting, the assigned kohain goes through the actual process. Scripted from beginning till end, he must maintain the exact intentions throughout the service and follow the procedure to the letter. These korbonos affect both the upper worlds and the physical world in a profound manner. The Gemara tells us that if the gentiles would have known the impact of the sacrifices, they would have surrounded the Bais Hamikdash with armies and not allowed anything to interfere. So how can Rashi say that when a man leaves part of his produce for the poor man, it is equivalent to all of this? All he did was refrain from picking up the droppings from his harvest and leave a corner of his field to the poor. In what way can this be compared to the spiritual impact of having built the Holy Temple and bringing all the sacrifices? The answer to this can best be understood by focusing on a concept that Chazal share with us.

The Great Opportunity to Help Another “More than what the rich man does for the poor man is what the poor man does for the rich man.” (Medrash Rabba Rus: 5:9). The reason behind this Chazal is based on very purpose of Creation. HASHEM created man to give to him. By placing man in this world and giving him free will, HASHEM allowed him the opportunity of perfecting himself so he could enjoy the greatest pleasure: basking in HASHEM’s presence forever. In accordance to the level of perfection that he reaches here, he will be able to enjoy closeness to HASHEM. The measure of all perfection is HASHEM. The more like HASHEM a man is, the more perfect he is, and the closer to HASHEM he is. The Torah is the system of spiritual perfection. Its mitzvos bring a person nearer to HASHEM by making him more like HASHEM. HASHEM needs nothing and does nothing for Himself. This entire Creation and everything in it was fashioned to benefit others. HASHEM is the Benefactor. And so, the more of a giver a person is, the more like HASHEM he is, and thereby, the more perfect he is. HASHEM is Perfect There is, however, one critical observation that bears mentioning. HASHEM is very good at doing what He does. He doesn’t need help running the world. And He has lots and lots of money. If HASHEM wished it to be, there wouldn’t be poor people. Even more, the entire concept of poverty and wealth

wouldn’t exist. HASHEM created a world with different sorts of people. Some are strong, and some are weak. Some are brilliant, and some are not. Some are wealthy, and some are poor. But it wasn’t by accident, and it wasn’t because HASHEM ran out of money. HASHEM created the world this way to allow people the opportunity to use their strengths and talents, their resources and situations. If man uses his opportunities wisely, not only does he grow, but he is credited with the accomplishment. If a wealthy person sustains a poor man, it is considered as if he gave life to that person. Even though it’s HASHEM’s world, and even though HASHEM gave wealth to the rich man, if the wealthy man gives to the poor man, he is credited with saving him. This seems to be the answer to the Rashi. Granted, when the kohanim brought the avodah, it was a spiritual act of extraordinary impact. But the source and measure of all holiness is HASHEM. The way that HASHEM shows Himself in this world is through giving. When man gives to others, he is acting as HASHEM does. There can be nothing holier. The Torah is teaching us that when you leave over your leket and shikchah, you are acting as much like HASHEM as you possibly can. When I take care of another’s needs, that is spirituality. It’s not second rate, not some add-on. This is the highest level of spirituality. This concept has particular relevance, as we find much of the spiritual aspirations today are focused on certain mitzvos. While all mitzvos are holy, we need to remain cognizant that their aim is to bring us closer to HASHEM. The way we do that is to be like HASHEM as much as we are able. The more that we are focused on the needs of others, the more like HASHEM we become. The Non-Jew who Saved My Father from the Nazis by Rabbi Moshe Zeldman

M

y father, who passed away recently at the age of 82, shared with me a truly amazing story about his childhood. My father, Bernard (Baruch) Zeldman, was born in the town of Simferopol, Russia in 1934. He was nine years old when Russia entered World War Two to fight against the Nazi threat. His childhood mostly consisted of him, his 15-yearold sister, their mother and grandmother fleeing eastward as the Nazis pushed further into Russia. They lived in bombed out buildings, basement shelters, overflowing refugee centers and sometimes open fields where, after days of traveling by foot, they’d just dropped from exhaustion. Nourishment often consisted of furtively digging potatoes out of the frozen ground of local farmers in the middle of the night. The Russian government, trying to protect their citizens, sent hundreds of them, including my father and his family, on a large barge that traveled east down the river. They would stop at neighboring villages and ask locals to take in families. The response in most places was, “We’ll take anybody but Jews.” As the days wore on and rations were running low, my father, at this point seven or eight years old, was getting quite sick and

18

weak. At every stop, they were desperately hoping for a salvation. Finally, a young, non-Jewish Russian woman came to the port and said, “I want to take in a Jewish family.” Her name was Mavra and my father and his family lived with her for many months. She saved their lives. Throughout the long, cold Russian winter she fed them, gave them shelter and taught them how to milk the cows, harvest the crops and fix machinery. But as the Nazis grew ever closer, father and his family had to pick up and leave. He vividly remembers a conversation that took place as they were saying goodbye to Mavra. “You saved our lives and there’s no way we can repay you. You’re not Jewish. Why did you specifically ask to take in a Jewish family?” Mavra replied, “Years ago when I was young, my parents were imprisoned by the Russians for anti-communist activity. I was alone, and the government sent me to Siberia for two years. After a train ride that lasted days, I arrived late one night at the station in Siberia. I didn’t know a soul, I had no money, and it was absolutely freezing outside. I had no idea how I was going to survive the night, never mind two years! “And then, out of nowhere, a man appeared and offered to take me into his home. They didn’t have much but they made me a part of their family. They clothed me, fed me and saved my

How one act of kindness triggered never-ending reverberations that are still being felt today. life. But there were a few things that were strange about them. They were always deeply immersed in these big books written in a funny language that reads right to left. The wife always had her hair covered. They had a special ceremonial meal every Friday night and strange holidays and customs. When my exile to Siberia was over and I was getting ready to depart, the father took me aside and said, ‘Mavra, you don’t owe us a thing. We did this purely from our hearts. There’s only one thing I ask. If one day you ever come across Jews that are in trouble or need help, pass on this favor to them.’”

69-Year-Old Bar Mitzvah Boy My father and his sister lived through the war. In 1945 he came to Canada by boat as a 13-year-old boy. He never had a bar mitzvah. I don’t think he even knew what it was. And he was never able to track down Mavra after the war. He married my mother and sent his three children to Jewish day school, and witnessed over time how one after the other, we all became observant, got married, and had our own

kids. At age 68, my father announced that it was time to make himself a bar mitzvah! He contacted our local Rabbi, cracked his teeth over the Hebrew, the Torah reading and blessings, the whole shebang. For his 69th birthday, he invited the extended family, all his old friends that helped him settle in Canada, and singlehandedly cooked the food for 80-person Shabbat lunch (he loved to cook). During his bar mitzvah speech, he said in not so many words, “My wife and I have three kids that have become observant, and all of our grandchildren are observant. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” My parents made their home kosher, began observing Shabbat and going to shul regularly. He lived for 13 years after his bar mitzvah. Think about the impact that one act of kindness can make. It began with the kindness from an unknown Jewish family in Siberia that lead to another act of kindness by a young non-Jewish woman to a Jewish family, that lead to giving life to my father, his children, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, not to mention the impact each of us is making in our own lives. One act triggered never-ending reverberations that are still being felt today.

Warren Buffett’s

Gems of Wisdom by Sara Debbie Gutfreund

Want to know what’s in Warren Buffet’s daily planner?

A

good friend of Warren Buffett was having dinner with Warren and a dozen others right before the New Year. As they discussed different upcoming events and meetings, Mr. Buffett pulled out a small, personal planner for 2017. “Do you want to know what I have in my daily planner?” Everyone at the table leaned forward, eager to see what was in the planner. He held the planner up and showed them blank page after blank page. “I have nothing planned. Nothing. I need all the time I have to learn and think.” Everyone at the table sat there silently for a moment as they thought about their overflowing calendars. Mr. Buffett was living one of the quotes for which he is well known: “Invest as much as you can in yourself. You are your biggest asset by far.” When Buffett is asked what he does with most of his time, he answers that he reads. He reads all day, and he thinks. That seems to be how he comes up with his greatest ideas. But it’s also how he has grown into one of the most giving, thoughtful leaders of our generation. Here are some more gems of wisdom from Warren Buffet: 1. On Israel: “You can tell prospective investors that I would have taken a perpetual bond if you had offered one. I believe Israel is going to be around forever. If you are looking for brains, energy and dynamism in the Middle East, Israel is the only place you need to go.”

20

2. Investing in the next generation: “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree long ago.” 3. Lessons from yesterday: “In the business world, the rearview mirror is always clearer than the windshield.” 4. Taking action: “Predicting rain doesn’t count. Building arks does.” 5. Protect your good name: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.”

11. On love: “The only way to get love is to be lovable. It’s very irritating if you have a lot of money. You’d like to think you could write a check: I’ll buy a million dollars’ worth of love. But it doesn’t work that way. The more you give away love, the more you get.” 12. On what’s important: “If you get to my age in life and nobody thinks well of you, I don’t care how big your bank account is, your life is a disaster.” 13. On mentors: “The best thing I did was to choose the right heroes.”

6. Developing habits: “Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.”

14. On thinking for yourself: “A public opinion survey is no substitute for thought.”

7. The value of family: “Basically, when you get to my age, you’ll measure your success in life by how many of the people you want to have love you actually do love you.”

Warren Buffett still resides in his modest home in Omaha, Nebraska that he bought before he became wealthy. He has donated millions of dollars to Israel and has earmarked the majority of his wealth to nonprofits. As his son Peter, a musician and an author, remarked: “My father transferred values to me, not wealth. He doesn’t believe in inherited wealth. His management style is the way he is in life. In a business environment, he finds great management and says ‘I believe in you’ and then leaves them alone. That’s the kind of father he is too. I would have never found my own success if I knew that my father was there to bail me out.”

8. Money and character: “Of the billionaires I have known, money just brings out the basic traits in them. If they were jerks before they had money, they are simply jerks with a billion dollars.” 9. What matters is what you do today. “The investor of today does not profit from yesterdays’ growth.” 10. Look for the next small step. “I don’t look to jump over 7-foot bars. I look around for 1-foot bars that I can step over.” To advertise, call 718-513-9885

Living Well Gluten Free Gitta Bixenspanner n.d.

Gluten free has become the latest BUZZ word (excuse the pun) in healthy circles. Who needs to avoid gluten? People who suffer from Diabetes as well as with all kinds of bowel problems such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), IBD (assorted irritable bowel diseases), Celiac disease etc. Years ago when people were diagnosed with any of these ailments they were at a loss of where to find gluten free items. Today we have become more knowledgeable about these disorders and thus gluten free items can be found everywhere. Going gluten-free doesn’t require embarking on hour-long search and rescue missions for expensive GF pastas and breads. Plenty of healthy, flavor-packed meals are naturally gluten-free, super simple to make, and loaded with good-for-you nutrients. Here are 5 of our favorites.

Nourishing Red Lentil Soup Red lentils are a beautiful color orange when dry, but they become a rather drab yellow when they cook. This can be disappointing, until you taste the lentils. This soup is very filling and great for gluten free diet. A few gluten free crackers or rice cakes almost make a full meal. INGREDIENTS 2 Tbs canola oil or peanut oil 1 medium or large onion, chopped 4 garlic cloves, minced Salt to taste 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp white pepper or to taste 1 (28-ounce) can chopped tomatoes with juice 1 pound red lentils (about 2 1/8 cups), washed and picked over 2 quarts water or chicken stock Cayenne to taste (optional) Juice of 1/2 lime FOR GARNISH Chopped green onions Toasted sunflower seeds PREPARATION Heat the oil in a large, heavy soup pot over medium

heat and add the onion. Cook, stirring, until tender, about 5 minutes, and add the garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt, the cumin and cayenne. Stir together for about a minute, until the garlic is fragrant, and stir in the tomatoes with their juice. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring often, for 10 minutes, until the tomatoes have cooked down slightly. Adjust spices to taste. Stir in the lentils and water or chicken stock. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, cover and simmer 30 minutes. Add salt to taste and continue to simmer for 15 to 30 minutes, until the lentils have fallen apart and thickened the soup. Using the back of your spoon, mash the lentils against the side of the pot to thicken the soup further. Add the pepper and add cayenne if you want more punch. Taste and adjust salt. Stir in the lime juice. If you wish, puree with an immersion blender or in batches in a blender, holding a towel over the lid to prevent hot soup from splashing out, and return to the pot. Adjust spices to your taste. Heat through and serve, topping each bowl with a generous sprinkling of chopped spring onions and the toasted sunflower seeds. Preparation 20 minutes Serves 4
