Welcome Welcome to our new season! Welcome to Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre, and of course, Buxton Cinema. If you’ve not visited us before we want you to have a great time with us. There are many ways you can buy your tickets, from booking your tickets online or by phone, to visiting our friendly Box Office team. The Opera House Box Office is open every day we have a performance. Access to the Box Office is via the main foyer steps or you can contact a member of Box Office team by an intercom on Water Street. At the cinema, you can also buy your tickets on the door. There’s a hearing loop in both the Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre Box Offices and you can borrow a Passive Infra-Red system for a small deposit. In the Opera House, we have seating across four levels for you to choose from, with stairs to the Dress Circle, Upper Circle and Gallery. In our signed performances, the British Sign Language interpreter usually stands to the left of the stage, but there’s a good view from most of the auditorium. Much of our seating is original, so we have booster seats available for little ones during family shows. There are toilets on each level including an accessible toilet in the Stalls area. We’re often asked if there’s a dress code, we’re happy for you to wear whatever you feel comfortable in. So if you fancy dressing up or just wearing your most comfy jeans, all are welcome. There’s plenty of parking within a short walk of the theatre, most of which is free in the evenings, and there are two disabled parking bays on The Square. Entry to the theatre is via the steps at the front of the Opera House or the level access to the left of the building. We open 45 minutes before the performance starts for you to enjoy a pre-theatre drink in the Dress Circle bar. Our volunteers are always on hand to fetch you a drink if you’re in the Stalls and the stairs are a problem. We have free tap water on the bars and we’re happy to provide water for assistance dogs. During our Relaxed performances and autism-friendly screenings, we reduce the sound, keep the house lights on and set up a chill-out area. For more information, have a look at the visual story on our website. All of our helpful volunteers wear a name badge, please feel free to ask anyone if you have a problem – we’re all very friendly here!

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Riding around the world in 124 days

Seeing your first pantomime should be an exciting experience, but for children on the autistic spectrum and people with learning disabilities the shouts, bangs and flashes can be alarming. Additionally, many families with children who express themselves loudly, or get up and move around, find it difficult to attend formal theatre performances.

Sleeping Beauty

The Nutcracker

Swan Lake

Sleeping Beauty is every child’s favourite fairy tale, the classic story of love and innocence, mystery and magic set to Tchaikovsky’s sublime score. Stunning choreography, sumptuous costumes and wonderful sets form the fantasy world in which the Lilac Fairy struggles against the evil Carabosse.

The Nutcracker, this most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family, begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. As snowflakes fall outside, the warm glow of the open fire sends flickering shadows across the boughs of the Christmas tree and all the presents beneath. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy-tale world where nothing is quite as it seems, toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse-King and his mouse-army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins...

Swan Lake, the greatest romantic ballet of all time, is brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score. From the impressive splendour of the Palace ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all. From Odile, the temptress in black tutu as she seduces the Prince by spinning with captivating precision to the spellbound purity of the swan queen, Odette, as she flutters with emotional intensity, the dual role of Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most unmissable technical challenges.

David Baddiel Trolls: Not The Dolls Trolls – the terrible people who spend all day insulting and abusing strangers for no other reason than to fill the huge gaps in their souls. There is a common wisdom about how to deal with trolls: don’t encourage these people by replying to them. It’s a good law. And it’s one that David Baddiel has consistently broken. Because David has seen trolls as hecklers, and if a comedian gets heckled, it is their duty not to ignore the heckler, but to wittily put them down. Rumours of Fleetwood Mac

Purple Zeppelin

The Ultimate Rock Tribute Show!

Andy Parsons: Healing the Nation

Rumours of Fleetwood Mac, the world’s finest tribute to Fleetwood Mac, returns in 2020 with a brand new show

As featured in the BBC TV documentary “The Joy of the Guitar Riff”, Purple Zeppelin are proud to pay tribute to the two greatest Rock Bands of all time, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin – together for the first time.

It was June 2016 and I was contemplating a meal deal. I only wanted a sandwich but given that I could get a snack and a drink for only 5p more it seemed financially irresponsible not to.

Whether you were lucky enough to have seen the original bands live or not, Purple Zeppelin will take you back to the excitement and the sheer raw energy generated by those incredible musicians.

I had spent so long pondering the EU Referendum result that I was in a massive rush. The lad on the till scanned the first two items, but the third item wouldn’t scan. He tried one more time, when it wouldn’t scan; he went ‘bip’ and chucked it through. It was then I thought ‘we’ll be alright as a country we will’.

Rumours of Fleetwood Mac offers a unique opportunity for fans to rediscover the songs and performances that have ensured Fleetwood Mac’s place as one of the most loved groups of all time. Personally endorsed by Fleetwood Mac founding member, Mick Fleetwood, Rumours of Fleetwood Mac is the ultimate tribute to one of rock and roll’s most remarkable groups. INFORMATION & DIARY

Booking Terms & Conditions TICKET PRICES AND FEES

Our Box Office sells tickets on behalf of companies that include visiting theatres, concerts, shows, artists and other venues. These clients decide the value of the tickets and the money collected from the sale of tickets is passed on accordingly. The advertised price of a ticket is the price that you pay; all ticket prices include any taxes, levies and booking fees.

BOX OFFICE OPENING TIMES

The Opera House Box Office opening hours vary depending on performance times, but it is usually open Monday to Saturday: 10am to 6pm (10am to 8pm when there is a performance) and Sunday: 4pm to 8pm (when there is a performance). Buxton Cinema tickets can be purchased or collected from the cinema bar just before the start of the film. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased or collected in advance from the main Opera House box office up to an hour before the start of the film.

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

REFUNDS AND TICKET EXCHANGE

52

We are unable to refund the cost of the tickets unless a show is cancelled. Postage charges are non–refundable. We cannot exchange tickets or money for a different event. Where there is more than one performance of an event we can exchange tickets where available. This requires a minimum of 48 hours notice and there is £1.50 administration fee for exchanging tickets. We offer optional refund protection at the point of sale through a company called Booking Protect. Please ask the Box Office for more details.

ADMISSION

The management reserves the right to refuse admission and to request any ticket holder to leave our buildings at any time. Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable point in the performance at the discretion of the management.

CONCESSIONS

On many events we offer concessions to seniors, children, students, disabled customers, groups and customers in receipt of some benefits. • Senior: we class anyone aged 60 and over as a Senior concession. • Children: we class anyone aged 15 and under as a child.

• Students: we class anyone in full-time education or with an NUS card as a student. • Groups: we class groups of eight or more people as a group (group size may vary depending on event). Where available, we currently offer concessions for customers in receipt of Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment & Support Allowance, Personal Independence Payment and Disability Living Allowance. Proof of eligibility is required. Essential Companions If there are discounts available on a performance we can offer a free companion ticket to anyone in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or anyone accompanying an Access Card holder with the +1 symbol. Other essential companions and Derbyshire County Council Carers Emergency Card holders can still receive a 50% discount on full price tickets as long as there are discounts available on a performance. These companion tickets are only available if you are accompanying the person you are caring for and are subject to availability. Proof of eligibility required.

ACCESS

RESTRICTED VIEW

Although the Opera House foyer and Box Office counter are not accessible, there is wheelchair access to the Box Office side door in Water Street, where there is an intercom system.

CHILDREN

The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The level access entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. Unfortunately the building cannot be accessed by motorised scooters. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls at ground floor level and an accessible toilet. If you will be transferring from a wheelchair to theatre seating please let us know when booking. The Stalls Bar is not accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat.

The Pavilion Arts Centre has good downstairs accessibility including accessible toilets, however the layout of the seating can change for certain shows, please check when booking. For your safety, we advise that you bring a companion if you would have difficulty making your own way out of our buildings in an emergency. We have passive infra–red (PIR) systems in both venues for customers with hearing impairments. Please reserve through the Box Office when you book your tickets (£10 cash deposit required, limited availability). There is an induction loop system at both Box Offices. Assistance dogs are welcome, please let us know if they are accompanying you.

A small number of seats on all levels of the theatre have a restricted view of the stage. We want our customers to have the best experience, so when you book online, an information box appears over these seats to let you know that there may be a restricted or side view, if you would like more information please contact our Box Office before booking. When attending an opera, please note that surtitles may not be visible from some seats, again, please check with the Box Office before booking. Family tickets are not available on restricted view seats. We welcome children to the theatre and include a varied programme of children’s shows and events throughout the year. We have a number of booster seats available on first come first served basis. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups should have one adult per 10 children. Children under three and babies less than 12 months are welcome at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price or ‘Babies Free’ is shown. For safety reasons the Upper Circle side seats and boxes in the Opera House are not suitable for families with children under 10 years old. The Studio Theatre seating is not suitable for children under three years old.

SUPPORT US

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

High Peak Theatre Trust is a registered charity, we earn 34% of our income from the sale of tickets, but the remainder has to be found from other sources. A grant from High Peak Borough Council helps, but we also rely on the support of individuals, corporate sponsors and generous donors to help us deliver our work. There are many ways you can help:

56

Your gift will be acknowledged with a certificate and a brass plaque fixed to the back of the seat, inscribed with the wording of your choice.

DONATIONS

SPONSORSHIP

There are different ways to make a donation, you can donate at the checkout when you buy tickets for an event, set up a regular donation or just pop some change in the donation box in the foyer. We have over 400 supporters who make a regular donation, which totals nearly £33,000 a year. The average is just £5 per donor, per month – a lot of small gifts really do make a big difference. Don’t forget to Gift Aid your donation if you can!

NAME A SEAT

Remember a happy evening at Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre, make a heartfelt dedication to a loved one, show where you most like to sit or simply support our wonderful theatre by naming a seat. The cost for naming a seat in the Dress Circle of Buxton Opera House is £150 per annum or £1000 in perpetuity.

LEGACIES

By remembering Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre in your will, you could leave a lasting legacy which will help to support this beautiful theatre and help people of all ages engage with the arts. It is also a tax efficient way of giving. High Peak Theatre Trust, who run Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre, is a registered charity, and a gift from your estate will be free from inheritance tax under existing legislation.

We feel very lucky to have such a wonderful theatre, but running costs are high and we face the constant challenge of operating a Grade II listed building with all its beautiful but difficult quirks. In 2016/17 it cost well over £1 million just to keep our doors open. CASH BONANZA

Join the Giant Cash Bonanza Lottery and help raise funds for good causes including Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre. The lottery was created in 2002 to help raise funds for charities and good causes across the country. In 2016, it raised a staggering £110,000 for Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre and awarded over 1,400 cash prizes to its members, including an annual jackpot of £10,000. All subscriptions paid by you will be donated solely for the benefit of the Opera House and the Arts Centre, after deduction of money for prizes and reasonable expenses of administering the lottery.

FUNDRAISING FRIENDS

The Fundraising Friends of Buxton Opera House hold a coffee morning in the Dress Circle bar most Saturdays between 10am and 12 noon, they’d love to see you! They sometimes also offer tours of the theatre and private group tours can also be arranged, please contact 01298 72050 for more details. For more information about our regular Back Stage Pass theatre tours, see page 6.

"I’VE BEEN TO THIS BEAUTIFUL VENUE SEVERAL TIMES TO SEE PLAYS, MUSICALS AND GIGS. BECAUSE IT'S A SMALLER VENUE IT FEELS MUCH MORE INTIMATE FOR A MUSIC GIG - GIVING A MUCH BETTER EXPERIENCE THAN A BIG AUDITORIUM. THE OPERA HOUSE IS A BEAUTIFULLY MAINTAINED EDWARDIAN THEATRE MAKING THE EXPERIENCE EVEN MORE SPECIAL. LOVE IT!" TRIPADVISOR
