BUTLER SCHOOL OF MUSIC 2019–20 SEASON

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Human speech is like a cracked kettle on which we tap crude rhythms for bears to dance to, while we long to make music that will melt the stars. — Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880)

Dear friends of music in person, Even in this hyper-moderated age, there is nothing like experiencing music in real time and face to face. The kinetic and visual drama of a live performance is all part of its theatrical power. Sit close enough and you can see the players in a chamber group making eye contact with each other. Sit close enough and you can observe the bead of perspiration falling off the pianist’s nose. Breathe with the singers. Feel the vibration of the bass line through the soles of your feet. This is my way of saying that we’re grateful for those of you who take the time and trouble to put yourselves physically in our spaces, to hear and see the work (and play) of Butler School students and faculty. You could easily stay at home and watch the live stream, but we suspect that you find your way over to campus because there is simply no comparable experience. Anything can happen, and anything does. So please join us this year as we melt the stars. All my best,

Mary Ellen Poole

DON GIOVANNI

by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

1787 | Italian language with English surtitles Directed by Chía Patiño Conducted by Douglas Kinney Frost

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25 & NOVEMBER 1 | 7:30 PM SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27 & NOVEMBER 3 | 4:00 PM Libertine, womanizer, and nobleman-in-name-only: Don Giovanni blazes a trail of broken hearts across Europe with his resourceful servant Leporello. After abandoning his latest conquest, the playboy plans more winesoaked misdeeds against women, including noblewoman Donna Anna and peasant Zerlina. However, his luck is about to sour. Existing in sublime contradiction, Don Giovanni, a dramma giocoso, or a "joking drama,” takes a sharp left turn in its final act for a satisfying and supernatural comeuppance.

MANSFIELD PARK

by Jonathan Dove adapted from Jane Austen 2011 | English language Directed by Margaret Jumonville

WEDNSEDAY, DECEMBER 4 | 7:30 PM THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5 | 7:30 PM Free Admission

At age 10, penniless Fanny Price goes to live at Mansfield Park, the estate of her aunt's husband. Clever, studious, imaginative and finely moral, she is especially close to her cousin Edmund. As she grows into her beauty, Fanny draws the attention of a neighbor, Henry Crawford, a charismatic yet cruel figure. To navigate increasingly difficult matters of the heart, Fanny must learn to bravely assert her character and wit. With an aim to create a "sound-world that Jane Austen would have recognized," the composer has scored this Regency era adaptation for a single piano played by two pianists.

THE TURN OF THE SCREW

by Benjamin Britten adapted from Henry James

1954 | English language

Directed by Kihwa Nam Conducted by Douglas Kinney Frost

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27 | 7:30 PM SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 29 | 7:30 PM SUNDAY, MARCH 1 | 4:00 PM A governess is hired to care for two young children; their guardian, the children's uncle, is living in London with no interest in caring for them himself. There are only three rules he asks the governess to follow: never write to him about the children, never ask about the history of the house, and never abandon the children. Employing Britten's signature mixture of tonality and dissonance to haunting effect, The Turn of the Screw is an old-fashioned ghost story that also touches on very contemporary themes.

THE ELIXIR OF LOVE by Gaetano Donizetti

1832 | Italian language with English surtitles Directed by Matthew Schulz Conducted by Douglas Kinney Frost

FRIDAY, APRIL 24 & MAY 1 | 7:30 PM SUNDAY, APRIL 26 & MAY 3 | 4:00 PM In vino veritas! Donizetti's bubbly romantic comedy follows Nemorino, a shy and hapless peasant, in his pursuit of the betrothed heiress Adina. After meeting a charlatan and purchasing a magic "elixir of love"— in truth, just a bottle of cheap Bordeaux — Nemorino is sent down an unlikely path that may in fact prove the powerful efficacy of wine in love. Sensual, sentimental and bright, The Elixir of Love is a triumph of sincerity that features one of the best-loved romanzas, "Una furtiva lagrima."
