This is my 3 year old niece Aoibheann on the day she learned her first prayer, she wanted her mum to send the video to me in Australia, as she was so proud of herself and confident to say her new prayer with no help! This little lady has taught me so much. When I think about gratefulness, I think about showing appreciation for the people who make your life great — your partner, your family, your colleagues, anyone who is always there to listen and hear your complaints and worries. But apparently, there’s someone else who needs your appreciation, as much or more than the rest of those people: “You” Aoibheann may be grateful for her shoes, her dresses, her pony, her dog, her brothers and her parents but she is also grateful for HERSELF. Imagine if we all thought to be grateful for ourselves at 3 years of age, I can’t help but think that there would be less self-sabotaging in the world and alot less

anxiety and depression. I don’t think we have to express this gratitude out loud; thinking grateful thoughts about yourself should suffice. It is interesting to take a look at self gratitude and how it affects our mental health, being grateful on a consistent basis has been shown to positively impact us in our relationships and our mental health. It can even help to relieve stress, anxiety, and depression. I read recently in an article that by trying to be grateful for YOU on a more consistent basis, we can help to improve our lives mentally, physically, and socially. Gratitude may not only change our perspective, but can help us to appreciate the positive in our personal lives on a daily basis. In the words of writer, William Arthur Ward, “Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, routine jobs into joys, and ordinary opportunities into blessings. A valuable lesson we could all learn from this, and since mental health month is approaching I thought it would be nice to share.
