What’s On Mr Turner, Executive Principal
It is always inspiring to walk around Bushey Meads School and see students engaged in their learning, participating fully in lessons and responding to feedback from their wellqualified and hardworking teachers. On Wednesday last week it was great to visit Mrs Aldridge's Year 8 Spanish lesson and hear so many students working in pairs and speaking in the target language - role playing a conversation about a previous holiday experience.

JAMIE (07Beech) This week’s student of the week has been nominated by Miss Dhanecha, Pastoral Manager. Jamie has been nominated for preparing and presenting an excellent talk. Well done Jamie - you did great!
NOOR (10Elm) Noor has been chosen this week as the KS4 student of the week for being a consistently dedicated, hardworking and fantastic student! Noor has 100% attendance, consistently high ATL scores throughout the year and works hard in every area of her education. She is an example to all students at BMS. Well done Noor, keep up the hard work. We are very proud of you!
EMILY (13Willow) Emily has been working hard to raise the profile of photography amongst younger students in the school. She is beginning a new initiative to allow students to relieve stress and express their imagination through photography by starting a new club - a fun escape during a difficult exam period.
Study Saturdays for Y11/12/13: 10am – 2pm, every Saturday in the LRC until half term
KS3&4 School uniform: length of skirts. Please note that the rules on uniform posted on the school website states: The skirt must be no shorter than 5 cm above the knee and must not be tight fitting. Students who do not have the correct uniform will be sanctioned in line with the behaviour policy and parents will be contacted to rectify the infringement.
KS4 Examinations: As we are starting the GCSE exam period, stress levels are getting high. To all Year 11 students please do all you can to ensure you are looking after yourselves, especially in terms of eating well, sleeping well and being organised and ready for your exams. Please re-familiarise yourselves with the examination hall rules and remember the school is providing you with a free banana and bottle of water before your exams. Please make sure the label is removed from the bottle. All the very best to you all, hang in there! It will be Prom Night before you know it! Prom Night: Please can all Year 11 students remember to have your deposits paid for the prom (£17.50) online as well as returning the permission slip. We organise the prom in the same way as we do school trips so we must have a signed permission slip from you in order for you to attend.
Schools have not had SATs in Year 9 for a few years now, but at Bushey Meads we like to give the younger students the practice in exams that will help them become more familiar with expectations when they face the real ones at Key Stage 4. Our school calendar places the Year 9 exams week in the week before half term (this coming week – w/c 22 May), and the Year 7 & 8 exams in the week after half term (w/c 5 June). Some Year 9 exams may be in the gym, but most exams will be in the classes of that subject during those weeks. We have put together a more detailed programme, with revision lists, on the website. You can find it under ‘Parents’ and under ‘Students’ too. Good luck to all the KS3 students!

BMS Attendance Award A special attendance award is going to Euan, 11Ash, for his outstanding attendance to school during his time at Bushey Meads School. Euan has achieved 100% attendance for five consecutive years – quite an achievement! This impressive feat has helped Euan to maximise his achievement, preparing him in the best possible way for his examinations. A huge congratulations to Euan – long may this attendance last into years 12 and 13!
Mrs Ash, Assistant Headteacher This year the month of May is ‘National Walking Month’ and this week has been the official ‘Walk to School’ week across the country. The idea is for as many people as possible to walk to school every day during Walk to School Week in order to encourage an active lifestyle, promote better travel systems for the environment and promoting exercise as a good stress reliever. More information can be found at http://www.livingstreets.org.uk/ where you can also sign up to get tips on being healthier and increasing the amount of walking you do each day. Of course, many of you live just too far away to make it feasible for you to walk the whole route to school. However, even if you are brought to school and collected at the end of the day by car you can still walk a part of the journey. Have a read of our suggested ‘Park and Stride’ routes below:

Bushey Meads School has 36 Year 9 students completing their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. For this award they have to complete four sections: volunteering, skills, physical and expeditions. In a build up to the expedition they had a number of training sessions on how to erect a tent, how to prepare the cooking equipment, first aid and navigation. On Friday, 5 May, the students put their training into practice at Phasels Woods. For this expedition they had to complete two walks, one on the Friday and one on the Saturday, navigating their group through checkpoints. The students had to erect tents in groups of three and cook both dinner and breakfast for themselves. All students did really well over the course of the weekend and the challenge provided them with some unforgettable experiences.
A big thank you goes to Miss Booth, Miss Budd, Mr Cox, Mr Knowles, Mr Lester, Miss Skevington and Mr Tocknell for giving up their time to help support on the expedition. Also, my thanks goes to Mrs Grady for running the first aid session. We are now ready for their qualifying expedition in July at Braid Wood!
Successful Study Saturdays
"I love the Study Saturdays - it is good to get up and come into school and really focus on achieving something constructive in the four hours allocated. At home there are too many distractions!" Year 11 Student
Yet again it was inspiring to see so many hard working students focussed on their revision for the forthcoming GCSE and A level examinations attending another one of our Study Saturdays in the LRC last weekend.
"Mr Back is really encouraging and helpful and has all the past papers printed off for us which makes it much easier - printing takes forever at home." Year 13 Student
Mr Back, our inspirational LRC Manager was, as always, on hand to provide, not only advice and encouragement, but also a whole array of ready printed off past papers across all GCSE and A level subjects.
"I have attended every Study Saturday so far this year. It has been really helpful. Year 11 Student
Over 60 students attended the session and demonstrated an excellent attitude to learning many for the full four hours.
"I find it easier to work at school; with other students around me also working it keeps me on task." Sixth Form Student
If you haven't yet tried one of the Study Saturdays come down this weekend - anytime between 10.00 am and 2.00 pm. You will be more than welcome!
Mrs Cooper and Miss Rowden Year 10 GCSE dance students and some of our disabled students were lucky enough to be involved in a three-day dance workshop and development piece last week. Funded by Hertsmere Council through the Sports Development Program, the Wheelchair Dance Sport Association delivered three engaging and inclusive sessions to the students involved. Session 1 focussed on developing the interaction between the various students before the development, rehearsal and performance of the piece in the final session. The GCSE dance syllabus requires students to study different movement styles as well as look at the inclusivity of dance, so the sessions provided the perfect opportunity for the students to experience this at first hand. It also gave them a starting point for their next assessed piece where they have to incorporate taught choreography with their own ideas. Our physically impaired students embraced the opportunity to work with able-bodied students, as well as to receive choreography from a specialist dancer focussing on their inclusivity. Not all of the students who took part are confined to wheelchairs so it was fascinating to see how the dance teacher ensured that all students were fully involved. The sessions provided Miss Rowden with professional development opportunities, furthering her own expertise in the field of disability dance. The support assistants working with the PI students gained valuable insight into ways in which they can aid their students in future dance lessons. This was an extremely valuable opportunity for everyone involved and thanks go to both the dance teacher from WDSA and Hertsmere council.
Students involved: GCSE Dance: Ben Faulkner, T-Ala Marsh, Scarlett Cloona, Lana Mulford-Lawlor, Sarthak Kanel, Thanaa Mohammed-Khan, Chloe Steuart, Lara Villiers, Olivia Welch, Hollie Ellis, Arabella Parker, Kelise Mullings
PNI students: Sarthak Kanel, Daniel Adebajo, Francesca Martin, Oliver Jack, Rhianna Jinks, Melisa Lowenberg
Mr Hawkins, PE Teacher & DoE/World Challenge Coordinator
Bushey Meads School has over 30 students who are taking part in the 2018 World Challenge to Swaziland, Africa. The students are departing in July 2018 and in preparation have been participating in a number of different fundraising events. To help with the group's fund- raising, most of them participated in a 100-foot abseil at Epsom Downs Racecourse. It was pleasing to see that all the students who took on the challenge each raised around £150. Thanks to Mr O’Kelly for driving the minibus and supporting the abseil, and to all the family and friends who came to support. As well as the fundraising the students’ planning and preparation for their expedition starts. Upon completion, they will then go on to their acclimatisation which will lead on to their trek and project work, before ending with rest and relaxation on safari. A possible project: In 2012, over a seven-week period, World Challenge in partnership with All Out Africa, built a new classroom at Langeni Neighbourhood Care Points (NCP) where, in the absence of a room, the children took their lessons under a tree. Seven schools worked on the project, with the first team digging the foundations, and the last team applying the final coat of paint. The orphaned and vulnerable children (OVCs) at the NCP had a new classroom to move into, teams felt a great sense of reward and the project was a resounding success.
World Challengers: keep fundraising as this will be a truly life-changing experience!

It was the first time they had all played together and with great team spirit they scored some consistent halfrounders. After conceding 13 rounders in the first half, Bushey Meads fielded with much more consistency and accuracy in the second half; only giving away half a rounder to Queens. Well done to the whole team Player of match: Sophie Parkhouse for excellent and consistent batting skills.

At half time the result was 4-4. Unfortunately in our second batting innings we were all out before the 30 good balls. A promising start with some strong fielding and catching. Player of match: Alice Elman for strong batting.

At halftime the score was 7 - 6 1/2 to Queens….then the rain came. The field became quite slippery but the girls pushed on, playing well but just not enough to get the win.
