HIGH PROFILE FOR BUSHEY MEADS SCHOOL AT PIXL NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN LONDON Mr Turner – Executive Principal On Thursday of this week our fantastic school had a very high profile at a national conference in London attended by over 1800 delegates (mainly senior school leaders and key educationalists) from around the country. Deputy Headteacher Mrs Ash spoke to over 300 delegates in a Breakout session at the start of the busy day - outlining all the superb raising achievement strategies that have enabled our school to significantly improve its results at both KS4 and 5 over recent years.

One of the delegates I spoke to later in the day said “it was one of the best Breakout Sessions I have attended – full of very practical ideas to make a real difference” – high praise indeed!

“Breakout 2 - delivered by Bushey Meads regarding Year 11 was brilliant! Congratulations on all they do and I will be summarising it for discussion with SLT back at school. Thanks”

At the conference all the delegates received a PiXLis magazine, which will no doubt end up in the staffrooms of all the schools represented. There were no less than three articles about our school: ü one mentioning our Head Boy Rikesh and one of our Head Girls Amira, who both compered the annual recent national PiXL Celebration Event and a lovely photo of them at the prestigious event to go with it ü one profiling Deputy Headteacher Mrs Ash, with details about her excellent Breakout Session ü one explaining all about our involvement in the PiXL Them and Us initiative that has been launched at our school this term and based around our new school motto ‘Our School has a Mind to Be Kind’

On top of that a film was shown to all the 1800 delegates in the Main Meeting that featured 8 BMS students – talking really eloquently about the project and also Mr Besisira and his Tutor Group in a tutor session led by him focussed on a key aspect of the

As if that wasn’t enough, our star Year 13 student Shannon sang an amazing solo ‘On My Own’ and literally brought the house down – there was not a dry eye in the place!

It was an absolutely stunning performance and capped off a brilliant day for Bushey Meads – almost half the school leaders in the country would have heard about and seen so many superb aspects of our wonderful school! Sir John Rowling the Founding Director of PiXL sent Shannon this email.....

Please say thank you from me to her. The song was wonderfully and movingly delivered. We wish her all that is best in the future but I want her to know that right now she has brought a great deal of pleasure and positive emotion to a lot of people. Well done to Shannon and to Bushey Meads!

BRIGHT YEAR 7’S SHINE AT CURRICULUM SHOWCASE EVENING Mr Fisher – Senior Assistant Headteacher On Thursday evening our bright, new year 7 students got the chance to show to their parents and carers the high quality learning that had taken place during the first half term. The large restaurant area was set out with wonderful displays from science, maths, English, the arts, the humanities, technology, and other subjects too.

Year 7 students attended at every table, explaining their projects to the interested parents. Students had cooked some savoury toasts to serve alongside our usual refreshments and many staff members generously gave up their time to supervise proceedings.

After reviewing students work, parents and carers moved to the seats they had pre-booked in hall. In a varied 40 minute show, students themselves explained what they had been studying. The first half term had a more cross-curricular flavour, with 'communities' as a unifying theme; for instance, maths sequences had been converted to dance moves, songs in French and Spanish lessons had been sung and played in music lessons, plots from history had been enacted in drama.

As well as hearing from our confident, student speakers, the audience enjoyed performances which included two short plays, a complex dance choreographed to mission impossible, and around 170 of our students singing to an impressive, live orchestra.

All speakers, musicians and performers on the night were year 7 students, a fact that had one of our dedicated school governors write in afterwards to describe how she

"...sat in awe. Even though the children are relatively new to the school, they all performed with confidence and lots of enthusiasm."

High Achiever Awards – first half Autumn Term 2017

As many of you are aware throughout the year, every half term, each faculty is asked to nominate one student from each year group to receive a prestigious High Achiever Award based on the student’s work, effort, attitude and achievements made throughout the previous half term.

Each student who receives a High Achiever Award will have their name published in the weekly newsletter, and a copy of their certificate displayed on High Achiever noticeboards which are placed in prominent places around the school site. They will also will receive a letter of recognition from the school and their certificate is posted home to their parents.

I am delighted that the following students all received a High Achiever Award for their work during the first half of the Autumn term. We congratulate them all for their recent success and wish them every success as they continue their learning journey at BMS.

THEME OF THE WEEK - REMEMBRANCE Mr Malik – Pastoral Support and Communications Manager This week students focused on the very important theme of remembrance in the run up to Remembrance Day on the 11th November. Students spent tutor time thinking about why remembrance is significant today and how people show their appreciation for the sacrifices service men and women make for us. KS3 and 4 students looked at areas where there is currently conflict and then looked at how they could show appreciation by being having a mind to be kind and doing act of kindness like the shoebox appeal or even paying someone a compliment. KS5 assembly consisted of Mr O’Kelly sharing the story of a local cavalry man who lost his life in north Africa in the WW1. Extracts of letters he wrote home were shared with the students who found this very emotional.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ABERYSTWYTH COMES TO BUSHEY Miss Skevington – Head of Geography The University of Aberystwyth’s Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. As part of this celebration, the department is looking to colleagues in schools to share knowledge, experience and up to date, exciting research. Miss Skevington was lucky enough to be invited to a course for teachers of the new A Level in July of this year and during that time made a contact which would prove to create an exciting opportunity for the students of Bushey Meads School. On Friday 3rd November, Senior Lecturer in Glaciology Dr Irvine-Fynn made the enormous journey from the west coast of Wales all the way to Bushey. Students from A Level Geography and even some enthusiastic More Able year 11 Geographers were invited to attend a session on Glaciation. The students were mixed up into small groups and really rose up to the challenge of a University style lecture and activity. They carried out a mapping activity, interpreting present day geomorphological maps to determine the ice extent and direction of ice movement which would have formed the landscape. Working in teams, asking intelligent questions and interacting with Dr Irvine-Fynn, students made the most of this enriching opportunity. We even learnt about some “hot topics” and areas of exciting, current research taking place in the world of glaciology. Thank you to the University of Aberystwyth and the Geographers present on the day for an excellent afternoon.

SECURING YOUR SUCCESS INITIATIVE Mrs Ash – Deputy Headteacher A group of 33 students from Year 11 (20% of the cohort) are part of a programme to “Secure Success” in the core subjects of English and Mathematics. The students are invited to attend support sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime where Sixth Form students help support them with their learning. The attendance to the sessions has been fantastic and the programme will run throughout the entire year. Students from last year’s Year 11 found the experience very worthwhile and were eager to give back to support to the younger students. Further mentoring programmes and initiatives will be rolled out to the rest of the year group over the next term.

FANTASTIC LEARNING FOCUS IN YEAR 11 LESSONS Mrs Ash – Deputy Headteacher

This week I dropped into a number of Year 11 lessons to look at their focus and attitude to learning. I was incredibly impressed and proud of the students and want to thank all the staff who are helping support the Year 11’s with their upcoming Pre Public Examinations.

GOVERNORS DAY AT BMS Mr Turner – Executive Principal Next Tuesday is arguably one of the most important days in our school calendar and is our annual Governors Day at Bushey Meads. It is a day when all our hard working Governors and some of our key Trustees come into the school for a breakfast meeting with our Student Learning Consultants at 8.00 am and then go on to lead the Key Stage 4 Main School Assembly. This gives them the chance to hear about all the latest initiatives related to teaching and learning that are taking place at the school and also profile themselves with a large and important body of students within the school. Much of the work of our Governors and Trustees takes place at evening or weekend meetings and is unseen to most of the staff and students, so Governors Day enables them to connect in with the key stakeholders in our school on a typical day – the students and all the dedicated staff who work here. During the day they have an important meeting with our key Middle Leaders – our superb Heads of Faculty, and they undertake a tour of each faculty and department area; visiting lessons to see the teaching and learning and marking and feedback that is taking place. In addition they meet as individual governors with a select group of students from all year groups in the school to hear their feedback about all the key subjects they study. After a comprehensive tour of the school during which they will see all the amazing developments that have been made to our school site over the previous 12 months, they attend a joint Governors and Student Parliament Meeting – this year discussing Learning and Teaching. After lunch in the school restaurant they finish their day at the school with some performances from our talented performing arts students in the Main Hall. All in all a great day that gives them an excellent understanding of the latest developments at the school and a chance to really hear the powerful views of our all important student body.

YEAR 9 TRENCHES TRIP 2017 Mr Newbold – Head of Humanities Faculty Early morning October 6th whilst it was still dark and most people were fast asleep in bed saw over 80 hardy and intrepid Year 9 students assembling at school for what has become our annual trip to Ypres and surrounding area to visit important sites from the First World War. Year 9 are currently studying this in their history lessons and this was an opportunity to experience something of what it was like to be a soldier in the First World War which many eagerly responded to. We made good time to Folkestone where we crossed to the continent by shuttle, in itself an interesting experience for students. From there we headed through northern France and crossed over into Belgium to Ypres. There students explored the remains of the trench system at Sanctuary Wood and visited the Memorial Museum at Passchendaele. However, for many the highlight was visiting the cemeteries at Tyne Cot (the largest British and Commonwealth war cemetery anywhere in the world) and the contrasting Langemark German cemetery. Students found it fascinating to look for the graves of soldiers with their surname or of those sadly killed on the day of our visit (and because this year is the centenary of the battle of Passchendaele) exactly 100 years ago.

Finally we had time to spend in Ypres itself where students were able to buy tasty Belgian chocolates and to enjoy the ambience of the town before heading back home.

Divija said; “it was a great experience but there were moments which were quite emotional so we should be grateful to the soldiers who helped us to live our lives today”. Jesse found it “very reflective” but “also great fun” as did Kayana who said “it was great fun and I learnt a lot about WWI” Well done to all the students who took part and a big thank you to all the staff who took part and made the trip possible.

CHILDREN IN NEED – FRIDAY 17TH NOVEMBER Mrs Ash – Deputy Headteacher Year on year, Children In Need gets bigger and better, raising more and more money for charity. Last year, as a school, we raised an impressive £1179 for this worthy charity. This year we would like to do even better! We will be holding a non-uniform day on Friday 17th November where students can pay £2 for the privilege of wearing their own clothes in school that day. We will start to collect the £2 for the non-uniform day from Monday 13th November so any student wishing to participate in the event needs to bring in the money and hand it to their Form Representative during one form time. Any students who do not contribute £2 for charity will be expected to wear the normal school uniform.

STUDENT RECEPTIONISTS Mrs Nealon and Mrs Biggerstaff – Receptionists Year 8 have now completed their year as student receptionists and what a fantastic job they have done – thank you to all the students who have assisted us over the past year; we would have been truly lost without you. All Year 8 student receptionists have been awarded 5 achievement points in acknowledgement of their hard work and as a ‘thank you’. Year 7 students will be starting their year as student receptionists from Monday 6th November and we are sure they will get off to a flying start. Good luck to all of you and thank you in anticipation of a very successful year.

SYCAMORE HOUSE UPDATE Mr Lyley – Head of House A huge warm welcome back to all Bushey Meads students and staff to the winter term, of what has already been a very successful start for Sycamore House. There were some fantastic entry's, across all Year Groups to win Sycamore valuable House points. Moreover, an additional belated felicitation to Isabella Stovey for her appointment to Head Girl! I am certain you will do a fantastic job in representing both the sixth form team and Sycamore House this year. Let the competition begin‌ Whilst the new term has only just begun and with so much yet to come, it has been an absolute pleasure to have been involved in the first inter-house Countdown competition. I was incredibly proud to see so many eager Sycamore students, all from Mrs. Garcia's enthusiastic 7 Sycamore competing head to head against many House teams with a mix of Year Groups. The 'Stoic Sycamore Students' did very well to achieve joint 4th place. With an upcoming House assembly on the theme of 'Participation' in the forthcoming weeks, I hope to see many more committed Sycamore students getting themselves involved! Derry, Sydney, Angela, Ilias, Benji, Alvin, Abhi and Kaushal.

Celebrating our first half term theme of 'Community' I was also very proud to witness the final product of History and Dramas' joint production of 'Trial by Ordeal', showcasing the value of communities working together in the Medieval period. The Year 7 skits, coordinated by our fantastic Head of Drama and Year 9 Form tutor, Mr Futerill, were fantastic to watch, filled with comic relief, great storytelling and awesome performances. A massive thank you to all students involved on the Year 7 Celebration Evening for making both departments so proud!

On a final note, a massive personal thank you to all Sycamore students at the start of this half term. Sycamore have progressed significantly in the House Cup Competition from 6th to 3rd place in the last 3 weeks. Be sure to keep working hard in lessons and getting yourselves involved to win those crucial points!

ARSENAL LADIES VISIT BUSHEY MEADS Wednesday’s Arsenal coaching session saw a special visit from first team player Gemma Rose as part of the Women in Football week. Gemma, who has visited the school before for an assembly, helped regular coach Lucy to run a session with the girls and provided them with some Premier league tactics to take forward into their own games. Gemma spoke freely with the girls about her own experiences at school and her development through the tiers of football to the point where she is now a regular in the Arsenal Ladies first team squad. The girls were all presented with tickets for the upcoming Arsenal Ladies game at the end of the session. Big thanks to Lucy, Gemma and Arsenal for providing the girls with this great opportunity that I am sure they will always remember. Thanks also to Mrs Maloney for supporting the event.

SCHOOLS SPORTS HERTSMERE PARTNERSHIP BADMINTON On Tuesday students from year 10 and 11 represented the school at the boys Hertsmere Partnership Badminton tournament. The competition was fierce with teams from Haberdasher’s, Watford Boys and Yavneh competing and the standard extremely high with county players aplenty. The Bushey Meads team acquitted themselves very well with a number of victories and some very close matches. Although not making it through to the final the boys should be proud of their efforts. Competitors: Vinal Kerai, Henry Stewart, Charlie Lyall, Joe Manning, Yama Qarib, Maxwell Hamilton, Billy Garvey
