THE NEWSLETTER OF BURWELL PRINT CENTRE

WE’VE MISSED YOU! We are delighted to say that we are now welcoming our fabulous Printers back to work. It’s been a very strange time and there’s lots to learn in this ‘new normal,’ but having our lively team back in action is great progress. The Print Centre has been open for a while with a small staff team, but each week we are growing little by little, and our loyal customers are returning. Having the Printers back really makes the building come alive again and feels like the work place we’ve missed. The furniture in the print room has been moved around so we can all stay safely apart and we have added a bit of movement to our daily routine as we are now spending lots more time at a single desk during the day. We are currently open to customers from 10am until 3pm. If you would like some work done, please email or call us first, as we are offering a ‘click and collect’ style service. Please also wear your mask when you come to collect your printing.

To keep everyone fit, healthy, and happy, we’re committed to doing ten to fifteen minutes of exercise each day. These are simple exercises that we can do at our work stations, while socially distanced, and include everything from touching our toes to dancing on the spot! It’s a fun and social break in the afternoon and helps burn off some lock-down calories!

AUTUMN 2020

ECO BRICKS NOW FOR SALE Thanks to a grant from Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, we were able to set up recycling project during lock-down. Our new venture reuses and recycles the inevitable waste-paper created by a busy print centre to make eco fire bricks (briquettes). The project has been a valuable activity to do at home during these strange times and has supported the Printers’ physical and mental well-being. Supplies of unwanted paper and tools were delivered to some of the Printers at home and the team have been able to remove staples from paperwork, shred, pulp and press the paper into briquettes. The bricks can be burnt in your fireplace, garden fire pit or wood burner as kindling, or alongside your standard fuel to prolong the burn time. We are now selling the eco bricks from Burwell Print Centre for £2 for 6 briquettes. We are continuing to make the bricks now we are back at work; it’s a good activity we can do socially distanced in the garden and they dry nicely in the sunshine. We are working on creating a good supply to sell over the colder months. Huge thanks to the Printers (and the Printers willing assistants) that took part at home and got a bit messy. You did a great job and we are now packaging up the dried bricks ready to sell. Dan, Jason, Chris, Usman, Adrian and Mark have all been busy making bricks.

ce! Watch this spa Just around the corner from Burwell Print Centre there is a little row of shops at the top of The Causeway. Our manager Jo has been working behind the scenes, to rent one of these shops as another Print Centre working space. This will allow more of our team to be back at work and be able to safely distance. We are excited to say that we now have the key and Jess and Elaine have been in to have a peek at the potential. Hopefully this little shop will evolve with us, as we are full of ideas of what we might create here, and what else we can use it for in the future.

BEHIND THE SCENES

SHREDDING SERVICE Burwell Print Centre has had a delivery of a new machine which makes short work of confidential documents. We now offer a secure shredding service using a cross-cut shredding machine. Paperwork is cut both vertically and horizontally ending up like confetti! Our service will ensure that you do not become a target for fraud and means your paper can be easily recycled. Drop off your home or office papers to us, the cost is £1.50 per 1kg. This machine has also helped our eco brick production during lock-down.

CARDS FOR SCHOOLS We have a new project in progress working with Schools to fund raise in the lead up to Christmas, which will also keep us busy in the coming months. We would like Schools to use Burwell Print Centre to turn their pupil’s artwork into personalised Christmas cards, postcards and magnets. The school raises money on each item sold to the child’s family; and the earlier the orders get to us, the higher the Schools fundraising potential. We hope this new service will benefit the School, as well as providing fulfilling work for the Printers at Burwell Print Centre. If you think your School might be interested, please have a look at our website and request a pack.

EVERY LITTLE HELPS There are many ways that you can give Burwell Print Centre a helping hand but one of the easiest is with AmazonSmile. If you are an Amazon shopper already, simply choose us as your chosen charity and we’ll get a 0.5% donation from your purchases. If you visit smile.amazon.co.uk (instead of amazon. co.uk) every time you shop on your computer, we get a little boost from your purchases at no extra cost to you. You can also activate AmazonSmile in the mobile app if that how you usually buy. Open the app, click the 3 lines at the bottom that open the menu, choose settings, then select AmazonSmile. Whether you love it or hate it Amazon are very much part of modernday shopping habits, so a tiny donation from a giant to a small charity like us is much appreciated. Of course, the more friends of Burwell Print Centre we can include the better so please pass this information on to your friends and family!

INSPIRED TO WRITE A BOOK? At the Print Centre we have had a huge increase in the demand for our book print and design services since reopening. It looks like the people of Burwell and beyond, have been writing their memoirs; that story they have always been plotting or, an illustrated child’s story while they have had a bit of extra time. We have had some really lovely and unique projects pop in and are delighted to help realise these ideas into final designs. With our digital printing services, we have a distinct advantage that we can offer small print runs either as a sample for a bigger run, or if you only need a small number produced for your family members. We have a range of binding options available including perfect binding and booklet making to get a professional finish. If you have a been writing and would like help to format your content, please get in touch whatever stage you are at, we will be pleased to advise on the next step for your project.

A DIFFERENT SORT OF PLAN PRINTING As you may know, Burwell Print Centre has had a plan printer for a few years now. It is often in use, printing large scale A0 plans of building plots, electrical wiring diagrams and garden plans for landscapers. At the start of May we were asked to print a different type of plan, a sewing pattern for scrubs! We donated 45 sets of scrub patterns to “Cambridge For the Love of Scrubs” and “Scrubs for Cambridgeshire” two local volunteer groups, who helped keep our local hospitals and care services in handmade scrub uniforms. If you have a plan you need printing whether it be a sewing pattern for an outfit you are creating, or a building plan of your new house extension please email it to us.
