Our First Online Annual Report
My mornings begin with 400 smiles, and my days are filled with opportunities to work with girls, teachers and parents.
We begin a new century and a new year with a new format to our annual report. For the first time in Burke’s history, you are receiving this annual report as an online document. This reflects not only our commitment to innovation, but also our obligation to environmental and financial sustainability, more important than ever in this challenging time.
All of these constituencies have given time, energy and resources to Burke’s in our centennial year. Through this annual report – which lists our donors and those who have served in volunteer leadership positions – we would like to thank the entire community of Burke’s supporters.
Burke’s is a school that balances tradition and growth – a balance that I view as one of its key strengths. While honoring our century-old traditions, we strive to stay fresh, try new ideas, and continue to expand our understanding of the best practices for educating, encouraging and empowering girls.
classrooms and much more; we successfully completed the largest capital campaign in our school’s history; and we launched a revamped and revitalized website.
The year 2008 epitomized this balance: we celebrated our centennial; we honored the legacy of Jessie-Lea Abbott, Head of School at Burke’s for thirteen years; we began a new century with a refurbished campus that includes a beautiful new library, state-of-the-art science, art, music and drama facilities, new kindergarten
Our faculty and staff strive to bring this balance to the classroom each and every day of the school year. Our girls learn in an environment that challenges them to become scholars and thinkers while nurturing them as children and young adolescents. I feel fortunate, indeed, to serve as the seventh Head of School at Burke’s.
Our girls learn in an environment that challenges them to become scholars and thinkers while nurturing
them as children and young adolescents.

The year 2008 represented a milestone in the history of the Katherine Delmar Burke School. I look forward with tremendous anticipation to the continued growth and development of our school as we work together to be the best we can be.

A Year of Accomplishments Burke’s continues to thrive as it begins its second century. Following the comprehensive Strategic Plan approved by the Board of Trustees in June 2007, we continue to pursue opportunities for curriculum development, financial and environmental sustainability and collaboration to build on the strength of our diverse community. The success of Burke’s remains, as it has always been, a result of our focus not just on what we do well but also on what we can do better. As the world around us changes at an increasing speed, the Burke’s board, administration, faculty and staff continue to work to keep Burke’s at the forefront of serving the needs of its students, families and community.
We completed our fiscal year ended June 30, 2008 with a balanced budget and are on track to do the same this year. Total operating revenue for the year was $10.4 million, slightly ahead of budget. Approximately 82% of our revenue came from tuition, with 11% from fundraising and 3.5% from both our endowment draw and from other income. Fiscal 2008 was a very strong fundraising year, with $751,000 in Annual Fund donations and an additional $355,000 net contribution from our Parents’ Association and centennial events. Our centennial efforts also resulted in a $250,000 pledged gift to the endowment and we received over $1.5 million in new gifts and pledges to the Second Century Campaign reflecting the remarkable generosity of the Burke’s community.
The 2007-2008 year was filled with accomplishments. At the top of the list was the naming of our new Head of School, Kim Wargo, and celebrating the milestone of Burke’s first 100 years with a remarkable weekend of events last May that was attended by more than 1,600 people. In addition, we completed the final phase of our Second Century Project this past summer with the renovation of our kindergarten classrooms, new outdoor play areas and site work. We closed our centennial year by surpassing our $12 million Second Century Campaign goal – a new fundraising record for Burke’s – and by burying a time capsule filled with pictures and descriptions of Burke’s traditions, letters from the class of 2008 and highlights of this historic election year for a future generation of our school to discover and enjoy.
On the operating side, our expenses for the year were $10.3 million. Instructional costs made up 66% of the expenses, general and administrative costs 19%, financial assistance 10% and depreciation 4.5%. It is important to note that Burke’s is much stronger than it was even a few years ago. We have new state-of-the-art facilities, historic highs in admissions, a generous financial assistance program and very strong faculty and staff in support of our excellent academic program. The Katherine Delmar Burke School has been educating girls for over 100 years, through world wars, recessions and even a depression. Thanks to our hard-working board, talented faculty and staff and dedicated community, we will continue to do so well into the future.
I would like to comment about the school in the context of the difficult economic times of the past few months. While there is no escape from the economic and financial market realities, we are fortunate to have a talented and dedicated board with extensive experience in finance. We have, like most everyone, experienced losses to our investments and along with our community face considerable economic challenges. Burke’s endowment, which totaled $11.7 million at the end of June 2008, has been negatively affected by recent market conditions and today is down roughly 25% from that point. The endowment is well diversified, professionally managed by the Commonfund and closely monitored by our Investment Committee. Our practice regarding the draw we take on the endowment to help fund the school’s yearly operations has been and continues to be conservative. Thus, we are able to ride out this period of negative returns without making significant adjustments to our programs.
I want to close with a special thank you to the faculty, staff, parents, students and alumnae who have played such an important role in the accomplishments of this past year. I would also like to thank my fellow board members for their dedication, hard work and singular focus on making our school the best it can be.
Jennifer Gridley, President Board of Trustees 2007-2009 January 2009

A Special Thank You Burke’s Centennial Weekend was a remarkable tribute to the school’s 100-year history of educating, encouraging and empowering girls. Alison Carlson and Mollie Ward Brown
These events were made possible thanks to the hard work, creativity and generosity of so many in our community. The board, administration, faculty and staff would like to extend its deepest appreciation to Alison Engel, Centennial Steering Committee Chair, and Alison Carlson and Mollie Ward Brown, Centennial Events Chairs, for their vision, leadership and management. Burke’s Second Century Campaign Burke’s exceeded its $12 million Second Century Campaign goal on December 31, 2008. This campaign showed unprecedented levels of generosity and participation from everyone in our community – Burke’s families, faculty and staff, alumnae, foundations and many other friends of the school. We extend a huge and heartfelt thanks to everyone in our community who made the Second Century Project become a reality by contributing to the supporting capital campaign.
