ADULT ENRICHMENT

EnhanceWellness EnhanceWellness is here at the Burien Community Center. We have a highly trained EnhanceWellness Counselor here to help you begin your journey to better health. Whether someone wants to lose weight, faces health challenges, is grieving, or is coping with depression, EnhanceWellness, a participant-centered motivational intervention with proven results, provides a highly trained community health worker here to work with you. Research has shown that participants in EnhanceWellness can decrease the length of hospital stays, manage their chronic conditions, lower their use of psychoactive drugs, alleviate symptoms of mood disorders, and develop a sense of greater self-efficacy.

Begin Your Journey to Better Health

EnhanceWellness happens in three steps: Screen, Plan, Action

1

AN ENHANCEWELLNESS SCREEN identifies personal strengths and risks. Together, an EnhanceWellness team member and the participant review a detailed health questionnaire.

2

THE ENHANCEWELLNESS ACTION PLAN focuses on areas the participant chooses to work on. This plan can also be shared with the participant’s physician.

3

THE PARTICIPANT THEN MOVES INTO ACTION with the support of a highly trained counselor, who offers ongoing encouragement, feedback, and monitoring. The counselor helps with problem solving, health education, and referral to support groups and additional services, including individual and family counseling, if indicated.

EnhanceWellness is a reliable complement to formal healthcare services for older adults. It is backed by independent research and has been shown to yield measurable results in health — an important consideration for service providers, public and private funders, health care partners, and older adults themselves.

Senior Membership Program Transitioning into a Giving Program

Helping Low-Income Residents

They say that “all good things must come to an end”. In reference to the membership program with the Burien Senior Program, it is not the end, but a transformation of. Beginning in 2018, we will be transitioning the membership program into a giving program that will help low-income residents of Burien be able to participate in the full range of programs that we offer. No fear, benefits from the membership program are not going away, they are just looking different. Current pricing for classes that were under the membership program will not change, the member price will now be called resident discount. We discovered that everything in the senior newsletter is also available in our Recreation Guide. You will not be “missing any news” it will just be in a different format. You will be added to the Burien Recreation Guide mailing list that comes out quarterly. Over the next few months we will be developing a giving program for those that would like to make a contribution. We are in the discussion phase but will roll out information as soon as it is confirmed. We will continue to offer the exciting and popular programs that we have over the years and look forward to your participation in them. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 206.988.3700.
