Here is a collection of my mast head designs, in this selection i used a wide range of styles. In terms of what shapes to use, thickness’s and colours to adapt these to fit into my modernist layout and work. I will continue developing and experimenting with all my mastheads till i get a eye catching effective masthead design. Overall i need to continue developing my designs until im happy with them, and with that create my cover designs and experiment which one suites all my covers.

L V

I also created masthead designs out of card, the use of card gave me the opportunity to play around, over lap and reposition each letters till i was satifised with the outcome, before i professionally designed them on illustractor. Next time i would create more mastheads to give me a wider range to choose from and would base most of them on one colour so they stood out more and wouldnt have the choice of picking between them based on colour.

Cover Ideas &Developpment

Once creating my masthead designs i moved on to developing my cover designs to go on the front of this magazine. I started my research for my modernism style of covers by looking at my artists which have a modernism style. An artist called Hans Neuburg caught my eye as he uses triangles to create his work, he influence me into looking at ideas that evolve around vector traingles. I then started to creating some drawings in my book, and tagged in using my red pen which colours i would refer to the style i wanted. in the sections i thought wanted colour. Which i thought was bright vibrant colours like the modernist artists used, like bright orange’s and blue’s. After i was happy with my colour pallete i used my research in triangles to merge shapes together and overlap triangles to bring as one a vibrant front cover idea. Next still looking at triangles i had an idea after looking through a kalidscope which has many abstract powerful and in my opinion modern style to the shapes it creates. Having this in mind i drew a mock up of what i would like to see as a cover design. A bright multi colourfull pattern on a simple white background with the title and logo situated at the top right where it will stand out to the customers.

L V

Once planning my modernist layout covers, I moved onto my cabinet of curiosity work to come up with ideas to turn into front covers. My cabinet work was based on artist and designer Peter Blake, his work of adding images symbols and object to i wired frame off 16 small squares. Influenced me into coming up with ideas to split these up in an abstract way but containing my work of my personal stuff by putting it back together in an overlapping way. This idea came from how many pictureframes are placed together on a wall all next to eachother but expanding out across the wall. The use of that i wanted to bring into my front cover, keeping the simple elegant work but then putting it all together in an abstract way as one idea for a new visual language cover. Furthermore using the picture frame idea off overlapping, i decided to not use exsisting work in the style of Peter Blake. But come up with an idea of colourful squares positioned on top of each other to give a nice elegant cover design.

Cover Ideas &Develop pment

For my street based cover design ideas i used one of my own pieces which i created for that project. The research came from a London trip where i took photos of London’s famous red phone boxes. These helped me for the basics i needed to adapt the image around the phone boxes. I decided to pick an image which has many boxes in it and take it in a way which was side on so you can see all the boxes but not every part of them to give a sense of perspective and depth to the image. I also want to add some more depth to it by adding clouds to the scene which would be done on photoshop. This effect gives a different appeal then just having some plain old rusty phone boxes but something else in which every one can interperate about. Another idea for my street based covers also came from London was when i was taking pictures of the iconic shard building. The idea of this was to situate this in the middle with colourful circles around it based on the London Underground Logo which will also be placed on the front cover. This image will have a adjusted level layer to change it all black and white to tie in with the artist Miles Donnovan which i used.

L V

As for my last unit which was the earth artifact i decided to research in vector circles just like my first one which was triangles this research helped me gather ideas in how to plan a good design layout. The basic’s to it is to use all circles and overlap them on photoshop and then fill in the gabs with colour to give a vibrant colourful aspect of a solar system in space. This design will be planted on top of a white background to make it stand out to anyone. With that i will add my title “New Visual Language to the top left hand corner and my logo design to the top right. With all the information added to the bottom underneath the solar system design giving a new earth based cover. Lastly I referred back to my work which i already created previously, i based this peice on a image i saw in a book called Information Graphic, it showed how much data came out of New York and sent across the world. I used this information to plan a cover which had the earth in the middle and lines coming out from New York to all the other countries and states which it goes to. I want to represent that using colour of orange and yellow lines based on a black background to give a more striking appeal to the cover.

In this chapter i used my pre existing plans from my book with the guidence of my research images to start putting together my covers. The previous research of traingles in a vector way was something i liked and wanted to include. I started with a strong dark blue background and started to create some triangles using my chosen colour sellection. I based it on shades of yellows and blues. Once getting a basic layout of my main three traingles with colours added to them, which i added a gradient to each one to give what look like shading. Next i wanted to add a pattern of smaller triangles next to each other, I simply created a shape and copied it till i got a line of them and copied them and place them above each line so it filled my biggest triangle. Once done I then selected them all and added a bright orange red colour to them to make them stand out as a main feature to my work. I then added smaller ones at the bottom to give it more of a striking appeal to the cover. Lastly i added some grey triangles in a loweropacity to break up the corner making your eye line go in to the centre. Once creating one cover i carried on to start to copy ,move around r e-s ize an d re-colou r different triangles to see which one gave me that striking appeal a cover should have.

L V

My next modernism style cover was based on my research i got from looking through a kalidscope at home, the beautiful colours and abstract patterns tied in very well in what i wanted from my modernism covers. I used this patterens to come up with a something that represents a kalidscope image. I started my piece in Illustractor creating shapes using the pen tool to get a basic 5 sided star. Using t hi s i add c olours using the gradient tool and outer glows to give a white glow feel coming from inside the star. Next i started to move outward and concentrate on one section as after completing one i can copy and adapt to fit the other sides. I wanted this image to be bright and colourful so i used purplesreds and oranges to brighten it up with more triangles added, every part i added, i also added a gradient to it, all going from white to the mid colour throught to the final colour. I added 3 final triangles group together as one in pink to give that girly appeal aswell as the strong blue in the middle for men. After finally murging the groups together as one i copied it all and place it in different places. To where i can put my headings and other information around it to find the best suitable place for them to situate in the cover.

Street Graphic was one of my favorite units to produce work for, so with this i planned to use a red London Phone Box as my main icon in this Cover. I started off in Photoshop with my image i took from London off my five phone boxes in a row on which i on a perspective angle. With this i found a desert image which i thought would work well as a floor for them to stand on. I transformed the back ground to black and white to give a more of a mystery feel. With the boxes i added adjustment layers of Levels and added contrast of light in the northern parts of the box. Once i was happy with the light on the boxes, i added some clouds around them and in the foreground to break up the desert ground, as that isnt the main part i want people to look at. Lastly i added a beam of light on a 30% percent opacity. This light which could be coming from a street lamp or something similar adds an idea of not knowing and then wondering what it could be gives another mystery feel to the design. Once again i moved the phone boxes around the foreground to either give more space at the top of the image or at the bottom so i can add the text around them.

L V

Next was to create a piece which in my plan was to use more images taken in London but using the famous london Shard building and its London Underground Logo. I started off by adding the shard and underground logo to the image. Then situated them that we are looking at them both from below looking up. Once i was happy with how they were placed i saturated them both, then adjusted the Levels so i kept the right amount of white to still be able to make out the words underground and right amount to keep the shape of the shard so its regconisable that it is that building from London. Next i wanted to add some colour, i based this on the multi colourful circle movement, with this i added different colour circles on top of each other to create a vibrant striking blow of colour to the image. I made three different sets of circles and copied them and place them around the items cutting some in half to make that they are situated behind the shard and foreground. Lastly i copied the image and placed them in different places ready to add text around them in the next stage.

Furthermore was to continue base a couple of covers on my cabinet of curiosity work. This work was based on an artist called Peter Blake, so using using him as an insperation i planned my peice to use my own images i made for that brief . I used 4 different peices of work and cut and slice them up, and using his way of working i postioned them in an abstract way. By overlapping them that you can still make out what they are but gives the style of Peter Blake which i still wanted to maintain. Each image i used meant something to me in my life thats why this one is quite personal to what i liked or where ive been in recent years. Since the main image in the centre saying ‘LIFE’ kinda shows that everything around that is linked to me and what i do and like.

L V

In my next cover i decided to use a similar style of work but not using pictures of my work. I wanted to keep the idea of the overlapping boxes but use a different way of showing that. In my research i saw picture frames which have been placed all over a wall in an abstract way. So using that method i decided to think about making my cover like that. Like Peter Blake i wanted to use bright bold colours because his work stands out and isnt dull. Using photoshop i created sqaures and rectangles of different thicknesses, colours and sizes and placed them around in any order of manner, as i want it as abstract as i can. When happy with my layout i added some block colour ones to it and changed where i wanted them to sit. After that i added some thin green lines going across to give something different to the peice instead of just having sqaure and rectangle shapes. Once done i collected all the peices and move them about in different places across the page. I even duplicated one to give a 3D effect to make it look like its jumping out at u by coming off the page.

14

NVL Front Cover Initial Designs In my final cover idea i planned to use an existing piece i made before hand in that unit. The idea came from a book called Information Graphic. This piece is all about global traffic date coming out off New York which is all to do with the global market over there, sent to the rest of the world. I started by getting an image of the earth and in photoshop inverted it to all black and white. I added a white glow behind it just like our own o-zone layer which we have around the Earth. Next i used orange brown and yellow lines and using the pen tool made curved shapes going to different places across the world. I added yellow and white dots at the bottom of where they go to, to give an estimated idea of where about it has landed on the map. Lastly i grouped together everything and placed them on different artboards, to see where the best place for the earth to go on the page.

15

L V

My final cover designs comes from my earth artifact brief, where my work was based on the solar system i wide vast empty space but in one part houses a small planet and a star called Earth and the Sun. Outside that we are held together by a huge galaxy containing billions and billions of stars and that is what i wanted to show and represent in my way. My plan was to use just circles and create what looks like a galaxy. I started off by placing in the centre a huge black circle which represents a star, and then going round i randomly placed cirlces of all different sizes to obtain a galaxy shape. I made sure i placed lots of smaller ones around the centre one as i want it to grow with size when moving out. Also so i can add many different shades of colour in the middle. Next once i was happy i wanted to add colour, there are many different galaxies out there with bright vast colour shows. So with that research i decided to have lots of colour not to bright tho but in a dull tone but colour is colour. I decided to have shades of blues, ornages, yellows and pinks in a spiral effect coming from the centre of the piece. Lastly i created some small circles in groups with white dots to make it look like lights from a solar system. I placed many of these around it in different opacitys to add to the effect.

This chapter concludes my cover designs, using my initial covers from before I started to add my required information to it. This was a hard long process as it required to slowly go through loads of different fonts on Illustrator to find a match to each cover design. My first font I chose was Gill Sans MT which is a very similar font to Helvetica. I first wrote it out and i thought i could change the ‘V’ and ‘W’ to shapes, by using the triangles I created before. Once I saw the result I instantly liked it because I thought it gave the text something else instead of just placing the text on top of all the shapes. I then added my other text and again using the same font of Gill I placed them in my blue traingles as I knew where I was going to put them beforehand. Lastly I had to pick which Logo I wanted and I went for the round one for this cover in orange and red with the NVL in white, this in my opinion matches the colours I chose to produce the Initial cover.

My next Modernism style cover was to finish my Kalidscope based image. Once I made it on Illustrator, I then followed my basic development plan of having a white background which I just put a white box behind it with a black boarder going round to give the definition of the canvas size. Next was once again add my text I tried Gill Sans like in the first but I also like ‘Bauhaus 93’ which is used in the directly left cover. This style of font I liked because it tied in well with the idea of using shapes but in a circle type of way instead of all triangles which my pattern is made up from. I also tried different logos in each cover, I particular liked the over lapping NVL in the chosen blue green and purple, I think this ties in well with how the pattern is put together by placings other triangles on top of each other just like the three letters of the NVL.

NVL Front Cover Final De signs Next was my street based covers this cover was to have 5 phone boxes in the clouds, this was done on photoshop and now in Illustrastor I started to insert my text. For this piece I found a font called Glouchester MT Extra this font I thought looked very old and victorian just like the style this cover shows. I also changed the letters from white to red to give an extra dimension to the image. The rest of the information is all in Gill Sans but like the heading I changed the first letters of the words Form Follows Fuction to Red and of the Issue date. I then added my logo which I chose three colours which match the cover and placed that in the top right hand corner keeping the same gap width around the edge of the logo and text. I also tried other logo and fonts in my other covers below but overall I liked the font of the Glouchester and style of logo in the first cover.

Another cover which I needed to add text to was my London Shard and Underground image. I thought with this one to change the font size. I kept the Gill Sans font but decided to enlarge the N so which will be the size of two lines so I can fit the rest of the New and the word Visual next to the next. I placed the Language underneath it with the L but slightly raising it into the N to make it look like its linked. Next I placed my other text in to the cover, I put these at the top just under the heading with the date on the right of the shard but staying quite close to it. Like in the phone box cover I used the same logo but in different colours, I chose bright glowing colours picked from the same colours used in the circles to make it stand out to the crowd.

Cabinet of Curiosity was another type of covers I needed to add text to. I started off with my heading which for one in the middle of the three at the bottom I used Gills Sans but this one was Gill Sans Condensed Ultra Bold which gives a more younger comic feel to the image especially with the image I have which has a lot of colour and unusual pictures in it. For that cover I tried by putting the image at the top and the text at the bottom. This in my opinion works well with having the text at the bottom because its unusual to have it there but for this style I like it. I kept the logo in the same place but put the date and Issue at the top half in a gap on the left hand side which in standard magazines is normal to have the date or price in a random place on a cover. Overall I liked how this one turned out.

My next cover was my multi colour square tile image, this was made on Illustrator so when done I went straight into adding my fonts. One I particularlly liked was the bottom middle one again which used a font called ‘Cooper St’. I liked this font as its quite a young looking font and groovy which personally ties in with the bright squares I made. I placed the font dead centre of the canvas, I did this as for that cover I moved the image just off centre and at the bottom so a couple of the squares went off the page giving something different by using the whole page instead of constantly having a border going round. Lastly I centered by information text and added the date on the bottom right on one of the green lines. Overall I really liked the final outcome.

NVL Front Cover Final De signs Lastly I came to my Earth Covers, where I experimented in where to place the galaxy and if I split up the headings. In my first cover I decided to keep it normal and put the headings at the top with the logo and information at the bottom which looked alright but I wanted to place with the space which was available. So in my next cover I move on to a different font called Maiandra GD which uses slightly of straight lines. I kept the first part of the heading at the top but put the word Langauge at the bottom under the galaxy. I placed the information on the left and aligned it left even tho the headings is central. So to counter balance this I put the date and aligned it right. So each side as something aligned to the edge while the heading is central in the middle of the cover. I continued to eperiment with other positions and logos so find the best place for everthing to situated.

This is my last cover based on my earth project, like in my other cover I played around in the positioning of the earth. I started in the center with my usual Gill sans font this font is dead simple easy to recognise and easy to read and very powerful in my opinion in its appearance. But I wanted to find out different fonts and different places I could position stuff. So with my next cover I moved the earth to the top right creating alot of space at the bottom to put my headings. With this I still used Gill Sans as my font and moved the exsisting text to the bottom but changing the size off all three words so they are all increasing in size showing a different apperance I can created just by changing the places of everything around. I contionued this with another two covers and found overall the second one with the earth positioned at the top was my favourate cover.

Another part is to design my contents page. The contents page will contain every part of my magazine. I have designed three different types of layouts. Using a block theme to add another item so it looks more interesting. I also added my logo to every layout as a reminder to what ur reading. Overall I liked the third one as the all blue boxes match well with my trainagle background. I added each subtitle to a random number to show how it will set out as I dont know the final page numbering yet. I will use this is my final magazine and have done in this one as it matches well with my theme throughout.

NVL Grid System & Layout Designs

31

The grid system is the main bit in what will make my magazine look professional. I based my research on a book called No More Rules by Rick Poyner who is a writer, lecturer and curator, critical writer in Art and Design.Which talks about Post Modernism’s impact.

Using his book I came across the same points through out which I want to use in my magazine. Firstly in it I notice that every paragraph starts with a slight indentation, this simple way of starting slightly in makes the paragraph stand out. My next point is that through out he keeps the same width of text which in this book is 8.5 cm he uses this on every page. I also notice that he aligns his t ext left which keeps a clean sharp edge to each paragraph making it look nice.

L V

My next point which I found from my book and is what I will have is, the use of white space he has. I like how an empty bit of white space can help a book not to be to crowded and over powering. This use of white space can attract a readers or make them go away.

Another point is that he keeps the same white empty gap around all his pictures and text and title on each page. Between pictures he has a 5cm gap but not at the top or on the side which are different. This I do not like as I think it should be the same all the way around this is some thing I will change from the way he has done it compared to how I will keep the same constant gap of probabaly around 5cm. Lastly he keeps his page numbers are in the same place which I will use.

32

NVL Grid System & Layout Designs

Lastly I have drawn some small thumbnails to show how I will layout my magazine. The images with the crosses through them are where my images will go on my double A3 spread. I have eight different types of layouts going from having a whole picture covering one whole side of the sheet. Or having many small ones on one side with the text situated next to it. Personally I like the second on down on the left hand side as it contains many pictures and a large amount of text. I also like the one directly opposite it because it have a large image plus a small with a big amount of text with a large amount of white space. Overall I use 3 or 4 of these small thumbnails layouts in my magazine because a wide variety gives a more professional magazine.

L V 33

Overall I am happy with my mast heads design and front covers. I have used new techniques and methods to put this magazine together in the style of my modern artist Hans Neuburg. His work has influence me in my background using the triangles to creat a simple but modern style of background, as a base to add my work on top. Im also happy with how my titles contain two colour, when the writing goes over the green triangle it turns black from white this is also to keep with the modern theme which it has. Furthermore my research about Rick Poyner has changed the way I have set out my magazine. Keeping the same gap around all my images and textboxes incorporating throughout the same width of text box which is 8.5 cm giving me room to add my images next to it. Overall I think I have created a good looking professional magazine incorporating all off the following requirements which I needed to add to my magazine.
