How to protect yourself during hurricane cleanup For The Leader Be mindful of personal safety during flood cleanup. Take steps to stay safe. The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) Emergency Operations Center (EOC) remains at Level 1 (Maximum Readiness). HCOHSEM will continue to monitor forecasts and weather developments along with the National Weather Service and the Harris County Flood Control District. Protect yourself from injuries during cleanup by wearing: • Hard hats • Goggles • Heavy work gloves • Waterproof boots with steel toes • Earplugs or headphones (if you’re working with noisy equipment) Prevent Illness after a Disaster • Clean up, disinfect, and practice good hygiene to avoid illness from bacteria, viruses, mold, and mildew. • Get medical care if you are injured, sick, or having trouble coping with stress. • To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, only use generators, pressure washers, grills, camp stoves, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices outside and away from open windows, doors, and air vents.
• Stay cool and drink plenty of fluids to prevent heat-related illness. Pace Yourself during Clean Up Cleaning up your home can be a big job. Be sure to take care of yourself: • Rest when you need to. • Decide which cleanup tasks are most important, and focus on those first. That way, you’re less likely to be overwhelmed. • Get help lifting heavy or bulky objects. If you lift too much on your own, you could hurt yourself.Try to work with other people, so you aren’t alone. • Get support from family members, friends, counselors, or therapists. Be aware of your surroundings If you are in the process of clean-up and debris removal from your property, please take precautions to prevent disaster-related casualties and fatalities. • Be aware of damaged water, gas, and electric lines. • Be aware of damaged building and construction materials. • Do not attempt to conduct major tree work or reconstruction without proper equipment, permits, and training. • Be aware of household hazardous waste and contaminants. • Report any hazardous materials spills to: Harris County Pollution Control Services Department at 713-920-2831.
Wearing protective work gloves such as the ones shown is one way to prevent unnecessary injury while conducting cleanup from Hurricane Harvey.

Joseph Medical Center expands services to help For The Leader St. Joseph Medical Center is the only hospital in downtown Houston, and one of the few hospitals in the city that have remained open and fully operational since the beginning of Hurricane Harvey. Most of our staff members have been on duty since last Friday, many of whom have yet to leave to check on their homes and loved ones. They have been taking care of a steady stream of patients being brought in by EMS or the Houston Police Department as well as numerous evacuees from the George R. Brown Convention Center, located just blocks from the hospital. Yesterday, we opened an 8-bed emergency triage around the corner of the ER entrance where medical students and residents are assisting physicians and nurses to assess patients and administer on the spot first aid. Houston police officers, who have not
been to their homes in days in need of medications and laundry services for clean uniforms, have been able to have their needs addressed by our staff as well. St. Joseph Medical Center prepared for Hurricane Harvey well in advance of it reaching the city, and had all the necessary supplies available to remain operational. The facility is open and is providing their full range of services. At this time, the hospital has not sustained any significant damage associated with the hurricane. Since Friday, we have seen a steady influx of patients and have treated numerous people from the George R. Brown Convention Center shelter, first responders and community members. For information about a patient or hospital services, please contact the hospital directly at 713-757-1000, 713-757-7575 or visit the website at sjmctx.com.

New home for Greater Heights Chamber of Commerce By Landan Kuhlmann email@example.com The Greater Heights Chamber of Commerce finally has some new digs. Earlier this year, it was announced that the Chase Bank building which currently houses Chamber offices was up for sale. In light of the announcement, Chamber President Jacob Millwee and others were suddenly thrust into unforeseen flux and were in need of a new home — which they appear to have found. The Preserve, a collection of office buildings at 2030 N Loop W Fwy., near the corner of the 610 North Loop feeder and T.C. Jester, will house the Chamber’s offices in Suite 2050. Millwee said the property was one of several on his radar when The Leader spoke with him about the move several months ago. The Chamber was searching for a spot with room for a reasonable amount of parking to accommodate small meetings at the offices, while maintaining (if possible) its connection to the Heights community and overall maintaining easy access for its members; and the Preserve checked off every box “As the Heights grows in terms of population and businesses, the businesses that are a member of the Chamber and in support of the Heights are getting further away from Heights Boulevard—the influence of the Heights is spreading,” he said. “If you plot out our membership on a map, where we’ll be moving the office to is actually more centralized as far as where our members are located [within the community].” That said, Millwee noted it remains the Chamber’s intention to eventually return
to Heights proper. Upon completion of the move, the new office will be just a temporary move for at least the next five years while executives formulate a long-term plan. “[Chase Bank] moving was not something in our current five-year vision, so in a way this was a reactionary idea to move, with the idea that in about five years we can have a proactive decision to come in with a little more intent on our side,” he said. Other than new digs, the Chamber will remain the same beacon it has for nearly three decades, providing its members and visitors the same quality services, Millwee said. That said, the move also provides some new horizons for the Chamber itself. “We’re excited about the move, which will be a benefit to our members in having a fresh face on the Chamber office, and will give us the opportunity for some re-organization and culling of things we’ve held onto longer than we should,” he said. Currently, a tentative plan is in place for the relocation to commence in late September or early October and occur over the course of several weeks, though Millwee noted those plans are still very rough and subject to change. “We want to make [this move] as painless as possible to our guests as far as the services they receive from us and the events we hold, so if we have to stretch it out a bit longer to maintain the same level of quality we’ve always offered, then we will,” he said. Neighbors: Myti-Burger and Hartz provided free meals to flood victims, first responders By Elizabeth Villarreal firstname.lastname@example.org
Happy birthday to neighbor Louis Ringh a/k/a Johnny Ringo. Ringo will be 90 years old on Sept. 11, and will be celebrating his special day with his lovely wife, Evelyn. Ringo, one of Oak Forest’s special treasures, can be seen riding through the neighborhood on his bicycle, visiting neighbors and spreading love, laughter and kindness along the way. Happy birthday to Amber Shumate who is 20! Amber celebrated her special day with her grandmother, Betty Taite, parents Cliff and Michelle Bigley, sister Ashlyn Shumate, and brother Cody Shumate at Tony’s Mexican Restaurant. Amber is a busy young lady who attends HCC and works for Paws Pet Resort. Wishing you sunshine and happiness! Many of our neighbors made a significant difference throughout the greater Houston area during the preparation, the storm itself and clean up of Hurricane Harvey. I wanted to share just a few of the stories we’ve received: The Shepherd Forest Civic Club became first-responders last week, when Hurricane Harvey pushed the floodwaters of White Oak Bayou into Section 3 of their subdivision. Civic Club President Kurt Schoeffler efficiently organized assistance from all three sections to help the residents of the 3700-3900 blocks of Gardendale. Neighbors came with trucks, tools and energy to help with the cleanup efforts as they cleared the water-soaked homes of damaged furniture, sheet rock, and personal items. If you can help with relocation, supplies or cleanup, reach out to info@ shepherdforest.org. Alice and Mark Sarmien-

to, our neighbors in Garden Oaks, shared that their children asked neighbors in Section 1 for any spare change they might have sitting in a jar or could be found on the bottom of their purses. Rowan11 years old, Olivia-8 years old, and Nathan-5 years old, collected over $900 in spare change! A family matched the kids’ collection by donating $1,000. After rolling and counting the coins, the kids cashed them in and then went shopping to fill flood victims’ wish lists from A Second Cup and The Giving Hub in the Heights. Shopping for two days, the kids cleaned out Big Lots, the baby aisle at Kroger and Costco. Sarmiento said the children worked hard and couldn’t have done it without the generosity of the Garden Oaks neighborhood. They are still collecting and plan to continue their efforts as long as they are needed. Amy (Wethington) Horne, Director of The Oaks Preschool, provided free childcare last week to assist parents who were involved in their own cleanup, volunteering to help others and those who had children who were just a little stir crazy after being cooped up during the storm. For infants to children of 12 years in age, they provided games, arts and crafts, outdoor time and indoor gym time. A good time was had by all. Our neighbor in Shepherd Park Plaza Helen Sangree shares: “Ian and I were enjoying a wonderful vacation in the Canadian Rockies when Harvey hit. Our neighbors Rebecca Swint and Lee Swint
kept us informed by phone and text. Late at night Lee Swint trudged through deep water to check on our home. We will always be grateful for their help.” Andy Tomczeszyn was thrilled to be invited to flip burgers at Myti-Burger on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 27, while many of us were wading through our flooded houses and trying to figure out the next step. Myti-Burger owner Shawn Salyers was determined to open to support the neighborhood so he reached out for volunteers. With the help of a few friends, MytiBurger was open for business and served some very hungry and tired folks over 100 lbs of hamburgers and 10 cases of fries. A huge shout of thanks goes out to Brian Lovins, Andy Tomczeszyn, Justin Gordon and Troy Witherspoon along with a few other volunteers who made this possible. Additionally, over the next few days Salyers drove far and wide in search of hamburger buns and other supplies to keep the hamburgers flipping. A constant and positive presence in the community, Salyers was working to clean up flood damage at Oaks Dads Club a few days later. Everyone’s favorite chickenman - Naro M., General Manager of Hartz Krispy Chicken on Pinemont - braved deep water and crazed crowds throughout the week to shop and prepare free meals to serve to well over 200 first responders (HPD, HFD) as well as countless victims of Hurricane Harvey at shelters and

In addition, Grown Up Sports is also seeking donations of food and clothing as well as new or lightly worn athletic shoes for our SHOU drive taking place the entire month of September. All of these will go to benefit victims of Harvey. This is a chance for you to literally *play* your part. If you would like to sign up for either tournament, you may do so at www.gusleagues. spor tngin.com/register/ form/616805116 If you do not want to play sand volleyball, you can come out and play in the cornhole tournament taking place at the same time. If you don’t care for cornhole either, just come by and show your support and bring donations. Anything at all helps.
Former Bernadine’s and Hunky Dory locations have a new tenant
he news of what’s to come with the former Hunky Dory/Bernadine’s building, both a former Treadsack Restaurant group restaurant, must have been on my mind in the last couple of weeks as I made a mistake on reporting the news for Hughie’s Heights. In the Saturday, Aug. 26 edition it was reported that the new Hughie’s Heights moved into the former Hunky Dory building off of North Main. This was incorrect; Hughie’s Heights moved into the former Foreign Correspondents building, also a former Treadsack Restaurant group restaurant, located at 4725 N. Main. Hughie’s Heights has done considerable work on the former Foreign Correspondents building to make it their own and the restaurant is now open. Foreign Correspondents closed late in 2016; Hunky Dory and Bernadines following suit and closing earlier this year. Who would come to scoop up their prime Heights real estate was the question many asked.
Christina Martinez Managing Editor
We have our answer for the former Foreign Correspondents building, and now we have the news for the former
Photo by Christina Martinez The Treadsack Restaurant group restaurants Bernadine’s and Hunky Dory closed earlier this year, leaving the restaurants and property vacant at 1801 N. Shepherd. The owner of Houston’s State of Grace will now be bringing his Tex-Mex concept, Superica, to the 1801 N. Shepherd location in the Heights.
Hunky Dory and Bernadines buidling – State of Grace owner, Ford Fry, has made it official that he’ll be bringing a Tex-Mex restaurant called Superica, a casual seafoodinspired restaurant, in the former Hunky Dory and Bernadine’s locations. “Whenever we look at a location, it’s always what do we feel like the neighborhood could use, Fry told CultureMap. “Some people
would say Houston could use more Tex-Mex like another mosquito, but I think it’s on another level. That’s the only way we’d bring it to Texas. Hopefully, we can perform on that other level than what’s out there. Superica came to life in 2015, currenly operating two locations of the restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, with another coming soon in 2018 to North Carolina. The Heights location of Superica is also slated to open in 2018. The Tex-Mex restaurant will occupy the Bernadine’s side of the property. Fry has plans to run a sister concept in the Hunky Dory side of the property, saying his inspiration for this restaurant comes from childhood trips to San Jancinto Inn, where he enjoyed things like raw oysters, cold shrimp and fried chicken. Fry will be bringing Superica and sister concept to 1801 N. Shepherd Dr. Email email@example.com

Hearts in Texas are big, only challenged by the Louisiana Cajun Navy. Being in the art world, my radar has been tuned into what was been happening here. Artists live all over this great city and the reports of loss started immediately and soon after the rescues, cleanup, call for donations, fundraisers and benefits followed. Here’s a rundown of what’s out there if you’d like to contribute via the arts communities. It’s overwhelming to look out there and see such devastation. At First Saturday Arts Market, many of the artists had special art designated for relief from sales. Others donated a percentage of all sales. Artists at the Second Saturday Open Studios will do the same, plus donation boxes will be out too. Concert this Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m., 3400 Main St. All money from tickets goes toward Harvey relief. The three presenting organizations are donating their services.
Apollo Chamber Players and Musiqa, and Jazz Forever will finish the concert. MATCH has generously donated their venue for the evening. More info at www.matchouston. org/events/harvey-reliefconcert Adult Swim Art Show, hosted by Insomnia Gallery, Friday, Sept. 8 from 7 - 11 p.m., 708 Telephone Rd., Houston, Texas 77008. Pop Shop America, located upstairs at 321 W. 19th St., is hosting The Hurricane Harvey Relief Pop Up with their favorite makers, complimentary cocktails, macaroons, and hands-on workshops. Saturday, September 16, 2 - 8 p.m. Silent Art Auction, JoMar Visions, 5247 Langfield Rd, Studio #25B, Houston, Texas 77040. The one big art show that stepped up and organized the fastest is FreshArts.org, hosting #TexasArtistsStrong, a Pop-up Exhibition + Fundraiser, this Saturday, September 9, 2017, 2 - 7 p.m. at Spring Street Studios, 1824
