Enjoy the sun. Avoid the rays. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights For The Leader

Preferred Health Directory

It’s summer – time to test your skin-safety savvy. True or false? • You need to protect your skin – just what’s exposed -- from the sun just when you’re going to be outdoors for several hours. • Sun protection is only a concern during the summer. • Sun protection products are all the same; it’s the higher SPF numbers are more effective. • Sunscreen and sun block are two names for the same thing. • Skin cancer is extremely rare. Dr. Alpesh Desai and Dr. Tejas Desai, dermatologists affiliated with Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, will tell you that the correct answer is “false” to each of those common misconceptions. First things first: More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than with all other cancers combined. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are the leading cause. The mutations in DNA that trigPhoto supplied ger skin cancer start with sunburn Drs. Currently operating at Braun’s Grove Heights, 1918 W 18th St. www.ilovekickboxing.com Described as “a bag-hitting, adrenaline-flowing workout that anyone can do - no matter your age or fitness level.” Eighty percent of the Houston franchise opportunities for iLoveKickboxing were taken – with seven open so far – but remarkably, the Heights was still available. Franchise co-owner Dana Kantara, a former physician’s assistant who also did some out-

Crew Fitness

Status: opening soon at the 18th Street Bungalows www.crew-fitness.com/blog/ danstrange Crew Fitness, a row studio concept based in Mobile, Alabama, is owned by husband and wife team Dan and Marcia Strange. The gym will offer monthly memberships as well as class package options. Their website says that the owners wanted to offer “a full-body program that would deliver real results with a very low risk of injury to men and women of all fitness levels. Indoor rowing is not only safe because it’s low impact, but it also delivers an awesome cardio workout.”

Orange Theory

Status: Open soon at 3004 Yale St. Suite 200 www.orangetheoryfitness. com Already operating at Sawyer Heights, Orange Theory’s newest location will be in the Whole Foods 365 complex. According to their website, the physiological theory behind the Orangetheory workout is known as “Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption,” or EPOC. During a workout, the goal is that you will spend 12 to 20 minutes of training at 84 percent or higher of your maximum heart rate, which translates to being in the zones 4 or 5. The “afterburn” effect of this is an increased metabolic rate for 24 to 36 hours after the workout.

HCOHSEM urges back-to-school prep For The Leader August is Back to School Safety Month and a good time to review your family’s safety and emergency plans. The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) reminds parents that teaching their children how to stay safe before, during, and after school is crucial. Although schools have emergency plans and hold drills throughout the year, parents should make sure that their children know their phone number, address and how to get in touch with them or another trusted adult in

case of an emergency. Traffic safety is also key to keeping children safe. Motorists are reminded that there are heavy fines for going over the speed limit and for texting or using handheld devices while driving through a school zone. State law mandates that drivers come to a complete stop when approaching a school bus that is stopped to pick up or drop off students. Children walking or riding their bikes should only cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. After school, your children should feel safe at home. Post an emergency phone list

where your children can see it. Include 9-1-1, your work and cell numbers, numbers for neighbors, and the numbers for anyone else who is nearby and trusted. Practice an emergency plan often so they know what to do in case of fire, injury, or emergency. Download the free ReadyHarris app from the App Store or Google Play for help creating a preparedness plan.

Not Enough Said about NSAIDS

NSAIDS are non-steriod anti-inammatory drugs. They have great benets for the majority of patients but have risks for a few, (especially if used improperly). Common over the counter Human NSAIDS such as Ibuprofen, and Naproxyn (common names Advil and Aleve) are extremely toxic to pets. Kidney damage or gastrointestinal ulcers/perforations are expected adverse effects. Aspirin is less dangerous in dogs but is not recommended because any NSAID when given within days of a better anti-inammatory drug (steroid or non-steroid) will GREATLY INCREASE ADVERSE EFFECTS. These over the counter drugs can also kill you if you don’t read the labels. Never take different anti-inammatory drugs within days of each other!! Choose only one drug and use the lowest, least frequent dose to appreciate the desired benet. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not an NSAID but a small dose will kill a cat, as will Aspirin. Cats are not small dogs and dogs are not little people. Certain Human drugs, foods or supplements can kill pets. There are FDA approved NSAIDS that are specic for dogs. They are tested to be effective and safe (if used properly!). There has been a great learning curve with these drugs and many fatal mistakes have been made in the past, If your dog does not feel good after starting any new drug, Stop and call the doctor. These Wonderful Drugs will extend quality of life for most dogs but do not experiment with them on your own. Follow your doctor’s advice closely and read labels thoroughly on all drugs before giving or taking them.

From the Pews. Golden Youth trip at St. Ambrose The Golden Youth Club will be taking a bus trip to enjoy dinner and a play Friday, Aug. 10. The bus will leave the church at 5:15 p.m. and will start with dinner at Tia Maria’s (dutch treat). At Theater Suburbia, watch the play “She Was Only Marginally Modest or Have You No Shame.” The classic melodrama is wonderfully entertaining and the audience gets to boo and hiss at the villian. The cost for the evening is $13 for the play, and the cost of dinner. Call Carol Herman at 713-688-6509 or email c.a.herman@comcast.net for information. ave you ever gone through something awful in your life? At church we have been studying through the book of John for a number of months now. The theme of the book is “Believe.” The book of John was written for the purpose of helping people to know who Jesus is so they will believe in Him. One of the things that keeps people from believing in Jesus is tragedy. When trouble comes in our lives, how do we explain it? In John chapter eleven the story is told of the death of a friend of Jesus named Lazarus. If you know this story, you know that Lazarus was later raised from the dead. It is important to realize that when Lazarus was sick, and when he died, no one except for Jesus knew that Lazarus would live again. I think it is interesting to note that Jesus said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified” while Lazarus was still sick before he died. None of the disciples that were with Jesus understood what was meant by this statement. This is the reality we live in as well. When we see awful things going on around us, when we experience the death of a loved one, when we face a health crisis, or a family drama, we can often only see the bad. We don’t know what God is doing and we wish that there was some other way for it to be done. We can trust in the fact that Jesus has a plan and that His plan is good. It is also encouraging to note that later on in the story when Jesus came to the tomb of Lazarus He wept. Jesus doesn’t put us through hard situations without feeling the pain of what we are going through as well. He understands what we are going through like no one else. If we are believers in Christ we can take comfort that Jesus is with us and while He allows pain and suffering in our life it is always for a good purpose!

Clear your calendar for the ‘Clear the Shelters’ event Dear Tabby, I’ve heard about a “Clear the Shelters” event and was wondering what that is? We are hoping to adopt a dog soon. With school about to start, this seems like a good opportunity to bring a dog into our family. Can you fill me in on this event and where we might be able to meet some adoptable pets? Curious about Adoption Events in Cottage Grove

“Clear the Shelters” event. Stop by their booth at the museum and find out more about bringing a loving pet into your family. You really won’t find a better opportunity to adopt that pet you’ve been wanting than the “Clear the Shelters” event. Our shelters are full of adoptable,

loving animals--many of them even purebreds--who need a caring, responsible home. Pets adopted from shelters tend to be highly trainable, healthy and appreciate every loving touch and kind word you have for them. Make a difference in the life of a homeless animal on Saturday, Aug. 18!

Reader, from P. 4A They’re getting their words wrong there (con’t)

Dear Editor: I just can’t resist! I know the Aug. 4 editorial was aimed more at spelling, but that goes hand-in-hand with grammar. Regarding your sentence “Here’s what makes English so difficult, which may help my wife and I better teach our children,” I learned along about 5th grade that “I” is a subject and “me” is an object. Leave out “my wife” and you have “help I better teach our children.” At least you didn’t say “myself,” which has become the common substitute for “me.” Don’t know why I, me, and myself are so difficult for people to sort out! I am a relative newcomer to the Heights and enjoy reading The Leader immensely...love the local tidbits. Tracy Ferguson

For a complete list of shelters and rescue groups who are participating visit the “Clear the Shelters” event, visit www. cleartheshelters.com Do you have a question for Tabby? Email her at deartabby questions@gmail.com

Dear Editor: I love to watch football on TV. but unfortunately there is one mistake that repeatedly happens during every football season. You will hear a coach brag about how good his team has played or how good one of his players has played. Football players do not play “good.” A coach can have a good (adjective) football team, but only if his players play well (adverb).” In the last Leader you told about being corrected for spelling “stationery” incorrectly as “stationary.” In your article you made the following statement: “Hank didn’t sleeped good, he obviously slept good.” No, Hank didn’t. Hank slept well. My daughter has commented so many times about how I taught her the above. I only wish that football coaches could learn the same. Gadys Paradowski

Pets of the Week

Dear Curious, “Clear the Shelters,” will be held on Saturday, August 18 at shelters and rescues across the city. The “Clear the Shelters” effort, which teams up local NBC and Telemundo television stations with hundreds of animal shelters from all across the country, returns for a third consecutive year. Since 2015, “Clear the Shelters” has helped 153,651 homeless pets find homes.

Meet Dexter and Kona

Vera Emily Greve, 102, born Oct. 6, 1915, died July 29. She is survived by her niece and her niece’s husband, Jan and Paul Cottage of Houston. Greve retired from Houston Belt and Terminal Railroad after 33½ years of service in 1972. She was very active in the St. Anne’s Altar Society, the St. Anne’s Guild and the Catholic Women’s Business Organization, serving as president of these organizations.

This couple came into rescue with an obvious history of horrible abuse. Despite their pasts, they are both loving and gentle. They are both completely house trained and working hard on mastering their leash manners. While Dexter and Kona would really love to continue living together, they can be separated if necessary. They only ask to have another dog in their new home with them to keep them company. To learn more, go to www.scoutshonor.org.

Happy, happy birthday to Frances Bohlae, our longtime Oak Forest neighbor who now lives in Garden Oaks. Bohlae celebrated her 93rd birthday on Sunday, Aug. 5. All four younger generations of her family attended church with her and then followed up with a festive celebration at her favorite restaurant, McDonalds! Happy birthday wishes to Shirley Ann Evans who celebrated her special day on July 28. Evans, who blew out 79 candles on her birthday cake this year, enjoyed a special meal prepared by her sister, Bette Weirich, and enjoyed a visit from family. Congratulations to Leanne Carrasco and Miriah Medina who were selected to compete as part of Team USA in the Tuscany Series, a softball tournament in Italy. Medina and Carrasco began playing softball together at Oaks Dads Club when they were 11 years old and both played on Frank Black Middle School’s softball team. Captain of the Lady Rams Varsity softball team at Waltrip High School, Carrasco is a senior this year. Parents Freddy and Kylie Carrasco and brothers Jeremiah and Angel, both playing football for Waltrip this fall, are very proud of Carrasco, a poised and focused young woman with her sights set on a college education. Carrasco also plays on the elite team Elite 9. Medina is a senior at Heights High School and has been competing on the Lady Bulldogs Varsity softball team since her freshman year. She also played for HTX Tigers coached by Derrick Polk. Parents Melissa and Billy Medina and younger brother Billy, entering his freshman year at Heights High School, are very excited to welcome her home and celebrate. In school, Medina has maintained a 4.0 GPA, is co-president of the

National Honor Society and is also Head Student Trainer of the Heights Varsity football team. Carrasco played catcher and outfield positions and Medina pitched and played first base with America Baseball Softball Abroad’s USA teams in the Tuscany Series Softball Tour. These amazing young ladies and their team played and won three games in Arezzo, Cappannori Province of Lucca, and in Nettuno, Italy. Interested in short volunteer stints at an area elementary school? Wishing you could make a difference in the community, but you never seem to have the time to volunteer? Neighbor and involved parent (as well as one of my favorite writers!) Betsy Denson is reaching out to the community and seeking volunteers to make a difference at Highland Heights Elementary School in Acres Homes. Wait until you hear about this wonderful opportunity! It is a very simple and easy way to volunteer without committing to long hours or a committee – those sometimes dreaded hallmarks of volunteerism. Denson explains, “This would include VIPS approved volunteers spending about 1-2 hours at a stretch at the school to sit with the kids, get to know them and to be a model for good manners and inside

voices. If you’ve eaten lunch with your kid or grandkid at any elementary school, you know the drill.” What is a “VIPS approved volunteer,” you ask? All HISD volunteers must apply just once per year in the front office of the school, provide a photo ID and agree to undergo a background check prior to volunteering, and this is known as the “VIPS” process. Denson further shared, “Highland Heights has 561 students there, split down the middle between African-American and Hispanic students. About a third of students come from families where the household income is less than $25,000/year. Mr. Hall, the wrap around specialist, came to the school last year and said his goal this year is to build more of a relationship with the parents in order to draw them in more to the life of the school. The school building is very attractive and looks to be fairly new. Second Baptist has also adopted the school and has completed beautification projects there over the summer.” If you are interested in being a lunch buddy or a hall monitor and able to give a couple of hours next year during the day and make a real difference in the life of a child, please email betsydenson02@gmail. com for more information.
