Walk your way to better health

Press Release Palerang residents are being encouraged to walk their way to better health with the launch of the new pedometer library loan scheme called 10,000 Steps. The Southern NSW Medicare Local has partnered with Palerang Council to develop the scheme, aimed at encouraging residents to walk 10,000 steps every day. “More than half of Australia’s adults are not active enough to gain health benefits,” says SNSWML’s Health Promotion Officer, Bridie Kenna. “Walking 10,000 steps a day can help you maintain a healthy weight, increase your fitness and strength, improve your self esteem and mental health, and cut your risk of heart disease by almost half. Residents can now borrow a step-counting pedometer from

their local library for free and see just how easy and fun it can be to achieve those 10,000 steps. The pedometer counts your steps and the kit comes with healthy lifestyle tips and local walking guides to motivate and sustain an exercise habit. Ms Kenna explained that the 10,000 Steps project aims to increase the day-to-day activity of Australians by encouraging use of pedometers to accumulate 'incidental' physical activity as part of everyday living. The 10,000 Steps website can provide support, free resources and information. “We are excited to be working with local councils in south east NSW to motivate local communities, workplaces and individuals to increase their physical activity levels through 10,000 steps,” Ms Kenna said.

Palerang ready for City-to-Soil Press Release Residents of Bungendore, Braidwood and Captains Flat will soon be taking their waste minimisation efforts to a whole new level, and helping agriculture along the way. Palerang Council is about to commence a landmark trial to assess the impacts of rolling out green-waste and organics collection services across the three townships. The trial will involve approximately 2,000 households in the three townships receiving a 240L green-lidded wheelie bin, a free six-litre kitchen bins and compostable bin liners for the collection of food scraps. These scraps can be combined with other organic waste such as grass clippings, small diameter branches, garden plant waste, pulled weeds and animal manure, in the 240L green waste bin.

Council will empty the greenlidded bin on a fortnightly basis as part of its waste collection cycle and deliver the organic waste to a privately run composting facility within the local government area. The facility will use the resulting compost to improve agricultural soils and in turn, produce more food. “We’re really excited about this project and hope that the local communities will enthusiastically embrace the service,” Palerang Council’s Director of Infrastructure Planning Bill Ellison said. “We have a great community that readily adopted the recycling programs Council rolled out over the last decade, and we expect that they will welcome this opportunity to reduce their household environmental footprint. On average, about 40-50% of all waste in the red-lidded bin P4 is organic waste, which
