What is Subject-based Banding (SBB)? • From 2008, SBB has replaced the EM3 stream in Primary 5 and 6. • Every child will be given the choice to take a mix of standard or foundation subjects, depending on his/her strengths. • SBB encourages every child to stretch his/her potential in the areas he/she naturally excels in.

Why introduce Subject-based Banding? • To recognise the different abilities of pupils and give them greater flexibility to concentrate on the subjects they are good at. • To encourage greater interaction among pupils with different strengths.

How will PSLE scores be calculated? • The PSLE scoring system remains unchanged. • The raw mark for each subject is converted to a transformed score (T-score). – The T-score reflects the pupils’ standing relative to other pupils on a common scale. • The Aggregate Score is the sum of the T-score in all subjects. – Each subject carries equal weighting.

How will PSLE scores be calculated? • The PSLE score takes into account the –content and demand of each subject –number of subjects taken

HIGHER MOTHER TONGUE (HMT) GUIDELINES ON SELECTION

Curriculum •

Pupils from different classes taking HCL will be placed in the same class for HCL lessons.

•

There is an additional 2 periods of HMT lesson per week. This will be conducted outside the usual curriculum time.

Examination and Scores •

HMT pupils will sit for both MT and HMT papers during examination.

Scores for HMT will be reflected on the result slip.

However, scores for HMT will not be included in the calculation of the total score for the examination.

Criteria for HMT (P5 to P6) •

The pupil would continue with HMT in P6 if he/she – – –

passes all 4 subjects;and Achieved at least 75 marks for MT at P5; and pass HMT.

Subject combination will be determined by school.

Opting Out • Pupils who are offered HMT in P5 are not encouraged to drop the subject at P5. • They can decide to do so after completing the entire P5 HMT syllabus.

HMT at PSLE •

Pupils who offer Chinese/Malay/Tamil or Higher Chinese/Higher Malay/Higher Tamil at the PSLE and are

in the top 10% of the PSLE cohort; or In the top 11% - 30% of the PSLE cohort and meet the language criteria to offer Higher Mother Tongue Language, i.e. an A* grade in the Mother Tongue Language, or at least a Merit in the Higher Mother Tongue Language may opt to study Higher Chinese, Higher Malay or Higher Tamil at secondary schools.

HMT (Chinese) at PSLE • Pupils in the top 30% of the PSLE cohort who take Higher Chinese at the PSLE will be given bonus point for admission to SAP schools. This bonus points is only considered for admission to SAP schools.
