In This Issue Introduction Health Fair and Worksite Health Education
In this newsletter, we share a few end of the year highlights. We also want to thank our partners, volunteers and donors for your incredible help all year and for supporting our current Holiday Giving campaign. Thanks to the generosity of many, Building Skills Partnership (BSP) will be able to improve the lives of more low-wage building service workers and their families in 2013 through training and college scholarships.

Angeles in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente, SEIU, and the Service Employees Trust fund. Over 80 building service workers received health information and free services provided by Kaiser Permanente, such as glucose, cholesterol, BMI, and blood pressure screenings and flu shots, as well as information on health and dental insurance. The health fair was part of BSP's statewide effort to offer health education at worksites and union halls within classes or during workers' lunch breaks. Currently, BSP has over 104 janitors participating in a ten-week walking program at worksites across Los Angeles and Orange County. Participants in BSP walking programs report that they choose their foods more carefully by reading food labels and are more aware of the long term risks that can follow from being overweight. They also lose an average of almost two pounds per person over the ten weeks.

Google volunteer Andrew Howell wrote this testimony as part a successful fundraising webpage he set up for BSP: "For over two years, I've been volunteering with Martin Santillan, a custodian at Google, teaching English and computer skills through Building Skills Partnership (BSP). When we first met, Martin expressed how much he wanted to reach out and speak with people around him, from his Sunday night salsa class to the security guards with whom he works the night shift. Through our lessons and BSP's supplemental group classes, Martin has grown enormously in his English abilities and constantly tells me how he uses them in his job and life. Over the last 2 years, I've seen a marked change not only in his skills, but in his overall wellbeing which goes beyond the workplace and into our community. Most importantly, I've made a true friend."
Orange County Scholarship Fundraiser Thank you to all those that came out to support BSP's scholarship fundraiser in Orange County, including Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva, and former Assemblyman and current Community College Trustee Jose Solorio. Recipients of BSP's 2012 scholarship program spoke at the event and inspired donations to our fundraising drive for next year's scholarships. Since 2008, BSP has provided over 40 scholarships to the children of janitors or other building service workers.
