Getting it together

T O THOSE WHO worry about the indus-

I try's ability to manage issues and coordinate broad policy questions, the report of the joint Forest Industries Advisory Council and the Forest Industries Council makes good reading.

Unlike the bad old days, when it seemed that the forest products industry lost more battles than we won, it now appears that the movers and shakers really got it together at their meeting earlier this year at Scottsdale, Az.

The membership of the two groups reads like a virtual lltho's l4tho in forest products. The FIAC has been defined as being like a meeting of the industry's shareholders and the FIC as similar to a board of directors.

While there has too often been more planning than action in the past, the new FIC system of "issue coordinators" that has been established would seem one of the best systems yet devised to handle issues, before

they reach crisis proportion. Where problems are industry wide, as in environmental regulation; private, non-industrial forest productivity; public forestland productivity; and solid waste, individual coordinators will be responsible for securing an industry-wide response. If problems are of a more limited scope, one or two associations or even an individual company might deal with the situation.

The FIAC had two overall objectives: (l) to increase understanding of the key universal issues facing the forest products industry and the systems developed to deal with them; and (2) to stress the importance of senior executive involvement in all phases of issue management.

As the battles over this country's resources get tougher and rougher, it is encouraging to see that the top people are taking the steps to plan and, more importantly, to implement those plans to assure that the industry is well set up to protert .ls interests.
