ollege is different from high school. It is a time of freedom and exploring new opportunities. The habits your student develops during the first semester will shape the rest of their academic career. In college, classes consist of fewer grades so it is important to be caught up at all times with homework and studying.
Encouraging your student to seek tutoring, keep a planner, and ask for help when needed can make a difference!
At times, students may not know where to go to ask for help. The offers many services in one convenient location to ensure students get the help they need when they need it. The services offered in the SSC are:
Nationally Competitive Scholarships
The Writing Center
Student Counseling Services
Student Disability Services
Encourage your student to explore the different options they have for getting involved on campus and in the community. There are daily activities and opportunities to get out and meet other students, staff and faculty. Remind your student that extracurricular activities are important, but to not let these activities affect their school work. Below are different ways for students to learn about getting involved.
The CORE is the center of a student's college experience. They can help students get the most out of their time at WTAMU through campus activities, student organizations, special events and programs, leadership development and student success resources.
The LEAD WT (Leadership Education and Development) Program was created to challenge high achieving students to further develop their leadership potential. Students selected as LEAD scholars will be guided to realize their leadership potential through education, application, and service.
Rec Sports activities are intramural sports that occur during the University year and facilitate men, women and co-ed teams as well as individual activities. Intramurals provide participants with a great opportunity to relieve stress and have a great time. Encourage your student to check out the intramural schedule that is available each semester.
Students who live on campus have the unique opportunity to participate in the Residence Hall Association and Hall Council. RHA is composed of individual representatives from each of the residence halls. These individuals are elected by their peers to act as hall representatives in the campus-wide organization. Hall Council allows students in each of the residence halls to have the opportunity to participate in the governance of their specific hall.

College can be tough. Sometimes students do everything in their power to do well, but still find themselves falling behind. Instead of giving up, students should ask for help. WTAMU offers tutoring services and labs designated to help students understand topics and materials.
The Math Department Math Lab is located in the Classroom Center Room 411. They offer tutoring on courses ranging from Beginning Algebra to Calculus II. Students may also use the WTAMU Virtual Math Lab (www.wtamu.edu/mathlab) 24/7 as a reference if they want to see more examples, go through practice problems or take a practice test on an algebra topic.
The Tutor Assistance Program will match students with qualified tutors to meet their individual needs. Students schedule appointments at their convenience to have direct contact with the tutors. To request a tutor, students must visit the Office of Educational Services in the Student Success Center, Room 108 and fill out a Tutor Request Form either in person or online ( https://apps.wtamu.edu/forms/tutor_request.php)
When struggling in a science course, students can visit the Science Lab in the 1st floor of the Classroom Center.
