Letter from the CEO With this 2018 Annual Report, I am proud to share with you the highlights of another successful year, and I hope that you feel proud of your impact on our organization and this community. In the pages ahead, you’ll see merely a snapshot of the incredible year that was. Because of your support, we were able to serve more people, host more programs, buy more books and do even more. Everyday, we work hard to support you in your endeavors, whether they are personal or professional, technological or traditional, intellectual or simply in the pursuit of fun. The picture on the next page is an excellent example of the kind of innovation that is possible with your support: in April of 2018, we opened The Backyard at the Doylestown Branch with proceeds from a bequest by the late James Michener. Featuring hundreds of native plants and perennials, a fire pit, seating, cafÊ tables and more, patrons are embracing the chance to enjoy the library outdoors in this unique and flexible space! Gifts like this one, and like yours, provide us with unique opportunities to expand our impact and enhance our services. None of this is possible without your support! We are excited to make 2019 another great year! Your library card is a key that unlocks limitless opportunity. We hope to help you open some new doors this year. Stop by your local branch or visit our website at www.buckslib.org to learn even more.

Badge Squad Are you a Globetrotter? A Coding Ninja? A Phanatic? Maybe you’re a Reading Rebel or a Cyborg? You can be anything at the library! In 2018, we launched Badge Squad, a program aimed at five to fourteen year olds who can complete a set of themed challenges to earn a badge they can proudly display or wear. Kids can work alone to earn badges or work with friends and family. In the last twelve months, we’ve handed out more than 1,600 badges to participants! Come into the library to grab challenge directions for self–guided work, or come to one of our Badge Squad programs to meet others and work toward a specific badge. New badges are introduced all the time! Visit www.buckslib.org/badgesquad to learn more and search for Badge Squad events on our calendar.

cloudLibrary Of the more than 2,076,519 checkouts in 2018, nearly 25 % were a part of our digital collection! In February of 2018, we launched our newest digital resource, cloudLibrary. In addition to books and audiobooks, cloudLibrary users can choose from an expanded selection of new and backlist titles. cloudLibrary is compatible with iOS, Android, Nook, Kindle Fire and PC/Mac computers. Digital borrowing has never been easier! Visit www.buckslib.org/e–library to access all of our e–resources.

2018 Annual Report

Summer Quest Last summer we launched our newly– rebranded summer program called Summer Quest, including our traditional summer reading challenge and a long list of programs for community members of all ages. With Summer Quest, our goal has been to encourage learning, in addition to reading, to help children stay engaged during the long, “lazy” days of summer. Accordingly, we more than doubled our number of summer programs, offering 1,354 different educational and entertaining events throughout the county, attended by more than 43,000 people! We hosted performers like The Academy of Natural Sciences, Dance China NY, Lehigh Valley Zoo, Flow Circus, Hu La La Polynesian Dancers, a magician, an acrobat and much more! We worked hard to offer families a diverse schedule of programs, exposing them to different cultures and topics, with hands–on, immersive experiences. Most importantly, we saw a lot of laughter and a lot of smiles! We are also pleased to report that more than 8,000 participants logged nearly 2,000,000 minutes as part of the summer reading challenge! By reading throughout the summer, participants honed their reading skills and avoided the dreaded "summer slide." In addition, our participation in the USDA Summer Food Service Program, offered throughout our partnership with the Bensalem Township School District, fed nearly 1,750 children at our Bensalem and Levittown branches. We also handed out over 2,600 donated books courtesy of our Children’s Book Drive. Literacy is an important foundation for future success, and by engaging children in the summer, we help them build skills at an early age that will benefit them throughout their lives. Summer Quest 2019 kicks off on June 22! Visit www.buckslib.org/summerquest to learn more.

Career Corner Learning happens in many ways, including play. In December 2018, we were excited to open Career Corner at the Yardley–Makefield Branch, made possible through the support of the Hamilton G. Disbrow Trust. In the same vein as Penn’s Little Village at our Langhorne Branch, which opened in 2016, Career Corner features a fully–realized, immersive playspace for young children to explore and experience. Featuring a diner, animal hospital, dress up station and construction site, toddlers and preschoolers can develop their literacy, communication and problem–solving skills and prepare for school through play. Play is not just for the little ones! We have an extensive catalog of board games, instruments, party supplies and more for kids and kids at heart. Stop in at your local branch to learn more.
