Enjoy a beautiful, tranquil holiday in Southern France In a region of France known as La Chataigneraie (the Chestnut Grove) lies Lagarde. The picturesque area boasts stunning natural beauty with a combination of mountain ranges, forests, lakes and rivers and a sprawling countryside. Not only does the wonderfully mixed landscapes provide beautiful scenery but also provides plenty to do by way of beautiful walking paths, hiking, cycling and exploring the mountain ranges. There are wide French doors leading from the living room straight on to the patio area. You’ll find a large wooden table, sun loungers and a BBQ in the tranquil spot perfect for relaxing and making the most of the beautiful weather with a lovely alfresco dinner or lunch.

The second gite, La Belle Chatainge is a 3 bedroomed gite sleeping between 6 and 8 guests. The master bedroom has a king-size bed and an en-suite, the second bedroom has twin beds and the third, smaller bedroom also houses bunk beds, perfect for children. In addition to the en-suite, there is a second bathroom and a lounge/dining area with a fully fitted, open plan kitchen. There are plenty of terraces to choose from for catching the sun, reading a book for enjoying the views, a swimming pool and a large room equipped for table tennis and other games and also a children’s play area and swing set. The gites have been owned by Denise and Gary Stephens since 2010 after the two decided to jump in with both feet and realise their dream, living in their own little slice of heaven in France. Arts & Textiles Meet the Artist

Helen Hadley

Helen Hadley is a contemporary textiles artist who works with both textiles and mixed media to create vibrant and eye-catching pieces. Helen creates a wide variety of wall hangings, images and 3D creations working from her own studio and as part of the Phoenix Contemporary Textiles Group and a member of the Kingston Embroiderers’ Guild. Since Helen was a young girl she has always been fascinated by textiles and working with a needle and thread. Describing how her mother used to make all of her clothes and taught her how to stitch the hem of her dress, Helen says that she became inspired by material from those early days. This inspiration led to her creating her own clothes as a teenager (including her college ball gown) and then later making clothes for her own children. Despite her creative flair having to take a backseat whilst she was both working as a teacher and raising her children, Helen later became reunited with her passion for textiles. In her retirement she embarked on City and Guilds courses in creative and machine embroidery and joined local textile groups.

A lot of Helen’s creative work is inspired by her travels across the globe and the photographs that she has taken on her journeys in places such as Arizona and China. She often uses certain objects or colours within those photographs as inspiration for new pieces. As well as working with textiles and fabric, Helen also creates pieces using card and thread – it purely depends on the subject matter and her intuitive feel for her idea. Her initial ideas for a new piece of art can also come from finding inspiration in a particular piece of fabric or colour – the texture and tone helps to form her ideas. Helen also says that the way fabric behaves in

her hands or how material moves in her hands also has a bearing on her work. The painting and dying of fabric are techniques that Helen utilises to give her work a fresh and vibrant quality, with the use of beads and wire adding a further dimension to her work. As well as working on wall hangings and framed pieces, Helen has also created a wide range of 3D objects including embroidered evening bags, cushions and scarves. She is currently working on ideas for next year’s Phoenix Contemporary Art exhibition theme. Helen has exhibited her work at a variety of venues both locally and across the West Country, including the Red Street Gallery in Brixham. Her work has been shown in the Menier Gallery in London and at the Beverly Hills Gallery in California. This year as part of the Surrey Arts Open Studios, Helen’s personal studio will be open to the public between 29th November – 1st December and 13th December – 15th December.
