Bucknell men’s track and field could not have asked for a more thrilling finish to the 2009-10 season, winning the Patriot League Outdoor Championships for the first time in 19 years. The Bison have been left wanting more, and with all but five scorers returning for another season, another 19-year wait seems unlikely. “Winning the Patriot League Outdoor Championships last year really elevated our program and now put us in a situation where the target’s on our back,” said head coach Kevin Donner, who was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year after his squad’s three-point victory. “But it’s a target that we’ve always wanted to have. We now have the confidence that we can go into these Patriot League Championships with winning them as our number-one goal. We return a lot of tremendous athletes, and with a natural development and keeping them healthy, we feel as though we have a chance to win both indoors and outdoors this year.” Sprints............................................................................................................................ Donner expects the short sprints to be especially strong for the Bison this year. Marlon Woods, Isaih Bell and Justin Hicks, the Indoor Rookie of the Meet, claimed the top three spots in the Bucknell record books in the 60 meters last winter, and all three will be back for another turn. Woods, who currently holds the record by just .02 seconds over Bell, will return after being sidelined with health issues. Bucknell will count on Thomas McGarrigle to continue his past success in the short sprints as well. At the long sprints, the Bison will look for John Picardo, Jordan Donaldson and Robert Arent to lead the way. All three collected points for Bucknell at the league meets with Arent earning Track Athlete of the Meet in the spring thanks in part to his 400 meter win. Hurdles........................................................................................................................... Bucknell boasts one of the top hurdlers in the league in Arent, who won the 400 hurdles and placed third in the 110 hurdles as well as fourth in the 60 hurdles at the championships a year ago. The school record holder in the 400 hurdles, Arent also ranks third in program history in both the 60 and 110 hurdles. Although not receiving the same recognition as his teammate, Dan Mularz also has been steadily making his mark. Mularz, who was second behind Arent in the 400 hurdles at the league meet and has also left his name in the program record books in the event, finished the outdoor season strong and is expected to continue his development into his junior campaign. Mid-Distance................................................................................................................. The Bison expect the middle distance events to be another area where they can load up on points. Chris Boyd and Clayton Smith have seen their share of success in the 1,500 and 800, respectively, and both were a part of the 4x800 relay that finished fourth at the league’s outdoor meet with one of the fastest times in BU history. Dustin Horning, who anchored the Bison’s distance medley relay to an All-East finish at the IC4A Championships last season, also returns. Donner is also looking for big things from incoming freshmen Chris Sacks and Dennis Logan. “Chris Sacks is going to be a great miler. He ran a 4:12 last year and finished fourth in the New York state meet in the 1,600,” said Donner. “Dennis Logan was the WPIAL champion in the 800. Both have run 1:54 for 800 meters.” Distance......................................................................................................................... With the graduation of former league champion Andrew Huebner, Bucknell will look to David Brown to continue posting strong marks at long distances. In addition to steadily improving his 5,000 time, the junior also scored in the 10,000 at the Patriot League Championships. The Bison also hope to improve their depth with the development of veterans such as Charles Murphy and Ian Shore. .After a sixth-place finish at the league meet last spring, sophomore Nicholas Blodis will anchor Bucknell in the steeplechase. Jumps............................................................................................................................. Graduation claimed six-time Patriot League champion and the reigning Field Athlete of the Meet Kyle Anthony, but Bucknell hopes to keep up its winning trend in the horizontal jumps with Bell and freshman Ray Holmes. Bell just finished out of the medals in the outdoor long jump and took third in the event indoors last season. Holmes joins the Bison with a New York state long jump title as a junior and a runner-up finish as a senior. The Bison should not lose ground in the high jump with the return of Drew Fitzgerald, Nicholas Hruch and Andrew Powell. “High jump’s going to be an extremely strong event for us. [They] are all guys who have qualified for IC4As in previous years,” said Donner. “Nick was hurt last year and missed a lot of the season and wasn’t able to jump effectively, but he looks to be healthy this year.” Fitzgerald will look to reclaim his form in the pole vault, an event in which he won the league title as a sophomore. He is joined by Daniel Markwalter, who earned a surprising sixth-place finish at the outdoor league meet after joining the team as a walkon. Multi............................................................................................................................... Bucknell has good cause to expect big things from its multi athletes. Powell backed up a third-place finish in the heptathlon with a Patriot League title in the decathlon last spring. With a year of experience under his belt, sophomore Jason Brown should also begin making a name for himself. “As a freshman last year, [Brown] was just kind of learning the event,” said Donner. “We think he’s going to be a big factor this year.” Throws........................................................................................................................... “A big strength of our men’s team this year will be the throws,” predicted Donner. “This is an area that we really want to capitalize on.” Ted Heitzman returns for his junior year after finishing runner-up to teammate Steven Pierce at the league meet and qualifying for his second straight NCAA Regional in the javelin. The shot put boasts three Bison – Tom Barr, Quinten Marcott and Zachary Shapiro – who have surpassed the 50-foot mark in their careers. Barr and Marcott also tallied points for Bucknell at the 2010 outdoor league meet. The Bison will rely on Leonard Joseph and Luke Webster in the discus, as the duo scored in its final meet of the season. Joseph also showed his versatility, scoring in the hammer throw and qualifying for Junior Nationals in the event over the summer. “Lenny had an outstanding freshman year, especially outdoors when he developed into a great discus thrower,” said Donner. “We’re expecting Lenny and Tom to be our top weight throwers indoors and our top hammer throwers outdoors.”
