BCM Welcomes Barbara Boukater Boukater Joins Staff as Business Manager BCM would like to extend a warm welcome to Barbara Boukater, BCM’s new Business Manager. Barbara comes to us from Weight Watchers of Buckhead, and she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. Barbara was born and raised in the Atlanta area, and currently resides in Marietta. Barbara has long been involved in volunteering and philanthropy, from raising funds and awareness to fight breast cancer, to organizing drives and fundraisers for schools, athletic teams and alumni associations.

“I’ve never worked at a place where I couldn’t be passionate about what I do, and get my family involved,” Barbara says. “I was looking for a job that was more than just a paycheck.” Barbara says that her faith also plays a large role in her interest in BCM and its work. “This is a growth opportunity for the faith of our family,” she says, and she is excited about being a part of BCM’s efforts in outreach and education.

BCM is excited about this addition to our team, and we look forward to including Barbara in the BCM family.

Barbara will take over as Business Manager on Feb. 28. Until then, she will be working with Jane von Seggern, current Business Manager.

BCM will say goodbye to Jane and thank her for her commitment to BCM with an open house on Feb. 21, from 4-6 p.m. See Page 4 for more details.

BCM FOOD MINISTRY 1,922 bags of food were given to 1,745 people in 581 households during December 2010. ——————————

Stan Carder Director Of Congregational Care Church of the Apostles I never was very good at math. In fact, it was probably my worst subject in school. Recently the lack of this skill was put to the test again.

Peachtree Baptist

Here is the equation: 1+1+1=13,000

——————————

You probably think that the total was way off but actually I was right! One of BCM’s volunteers, and a member at Church of the Apostles, Mr. Tom Umstead, came to me with the idea of a food drive before the holidays. One man, one can of food, and one month resulted in 13,000 food items being donated to BCM’s food pantry! That truly shows the blessing of having the wonderful volunteers who give of their time and energy for the benefit of this ministry. It truly shows the influence of one individual affecting the lives of many.

Thank you to our January Donors Buckhead Church Cathedral of Christ the King Holy Spirit Catholic Church Peachtree Road United Methodist Church St. Luke Lutheran Church ——————————

By the way... it may be terrible addition but wonderful math! Everyone’s grades were A+!

2010 Achievements BCM Serves Thousands of Families in Crisis with Your Help Last year, BCM was able to help more than 10,000 people change their lives for the better, thanks to the support of volunteers like you! Together we have achieved so much: • BCM has assisted 10,397 people in crisis — that’s 3,666 households! • 2,051 people have avoided eviction or foreclosure because they received rent or mortgage payment assistance from BCM. • 218 households were able to keep the lights on and heat their homes because of BCM’s utility payment assistance. • 8 families have graduated from our Money Management Course, where they developed skills and strategies for managing household finances. These skills will help them make long-terms changes in their households, and they will be able to share those skills with their children. • 208 children will have a happier, more productive school year because of the school supplies provided.

BCM to Celebrate Retiring Business Manager Jane von Seggern with Open House Please Join Us on Feb. 21 Buckhead Christian Ministry will celebrate retiring Business Manager Jane von Seggern at with an open house reception Feb. 21. Please join us from 4-6 p.m. at the BCM office. Jane, who has been our Business Manager for the past three years, has a long history at BCM. She became a BCM liaison at St. Luke Lutheran Church in 1997, when St. Luke became one of BCM's partner churches. Since then, Jane has also volunteered in the food pantry, where she helped manage inventory. "Giving back to the community has always been a part of my life," Jane says. "It's especially important to me to take care of 'the least of these,' and for me that means confronting hunger and homelessness. My work as a BCM liaison and, later, as an employee, has allowed me to do just that." We will all miss Jane and we value the many contributions she has made to the BCM family. We look forward to seeing you Feb. 21 as we celebrate Jane’s work at BCM and wish her all the best in the future!

• The 19 families in The 70/30 Project have collectively paid off $52,160 in debt, averaging $3,148 each. • 5,435 people have clothes to wear to interviews, school and church, thanks to vouchers for Buckhead THRIFTique. The vouchers are valued at $98,652, and all the clothing distributed to those in need is donated, stocked and sorted by donors and volunteers like you!

BCM thanks all our 279 volunteers for their hard work in 2010, and we look forward to an even better 2011.

Hourly Workers May Soon be Homeless After Winter Storm Your Donation Will Help Families Keep Their Homes The ice has melted, but last week's storm continues to impact our city and our neighbors. Businesses were closed and MARTA buses were not running. Hundreds — if not thousands — of hourly workers were unable to work. BCM is increasing our rent and utility assistance program by 57 percent so that we can help more families who have been impacted by the storm — and we need your help. Hourly workers do not get paid if they do not work, so many of these families are now in a severe financial crisis. BCM anticipates a high volume of requests for assistance with February and March rent from workers who lost wages because of the storm. Please help workers and their families recover from the storm by making a financial contribution to BCM today.

Mail your donation to BCM, 2847 Piedmont Road, Atlanta, GA 30305 to help today!
