VESTAMAGER synthesis of a sensoric exploration

The project’s purpose is to grasp the landscape character and analyse it through a perceptive methodology. To catch the time aspect and motion the project uses the filmic media and moving images as an experimental language to translate the landscape. Alongside the above mentioned tools, the project uses perception and the synthesis of sonic and visual experience. Using this methodolgy of exploration and design, the techniques of filmic and sound mapping, experimental and traditional diagram making will reveal the synesthesy of landscape. The starting point of site analysis is the constant presence of human source activities and sound such as construction site, heavy air traffic or the highway nearby this vast nature area. The overlap of natural and urban features is such a strong phenomena that one can hardly find a situation on site without these. http://synesthesiaproject.tumblr.com/ https://vimeo.com/95363431 https://issuu.com/bttn_t/stacks/43d5411423834bcf8f646140d26f887f

The project is dealing with different kinds of media platforms during analysis and the design process. Today, when our life is spinned by and around digital media the project raises the question if it is possible to use the advantages of `being online` and put this `digital user attitude` into a different context. By putting the project online the idea is to set a part of the design process onto a digital platform to be able to collect and use different findings from visitors, park users or from others involved. It would funciton as a free and open library of explorations, impressions, ideas or comments about the site. http://synesthesiaproject.tumblr.com/

4

Project’s current outcome is a design proposal of setting installations onto specific sites to capture the essence, to respond and interact with natural or anthropogenic components. Installations also function as an introduction and invitation to a big scale exploration where explorers would collect different bits and pieces of the area and puzzle them together. 7 spots were chosen to catch the special features of the area, and define landscape characteristics. 7 collage diagrams were made to illustrate these.

5

6

Installation_1 Installation is sited near to the entrance of Amager Fælled. Here there is a constellation of an elevated metro line, a highway, round abouts and the Koncerthuset. The sound installation’s purpose is to respond to the phenomena of the sonic situation generated by a heavy presence of motion and highlight the currently weak entrance to Amager Fælled. The structure [1] is made of wooden poles set by different angles and lengths with varied intervals between them. This installation is also an experiment about how a structure like this can filter the different volumes of sounds. Sounds are flowing in-between the poles and by getting through them they are reflected. This generated sound can be experienced by walking through the installation.

[1]

[2]

The twin of this installation is set on the top of the artifical hill nearby [2]. Structure is built up of birch trees composed on a rectangular based plan. [3] and [4] are axis to create a visual connection between the weak entry of the park and the urban structure. Installation also consists of wooden poles and birch trees with the similar filtering and reflection effects. Birch trees are also a reference to the birch forest in Kalvebod Fælled. [4]

[3]

[1] [2]

7

Installation_2 Installation is sited in Kalvebod FĂŚlled on the edge of the birch forest. The composition`s purpose is to grasp a special light phenomena which one can see in the woods on a sunny day. The grid construction of the poles and the strings between them is a translation of a forest situation being in-between the trees. The installation is a sort of invert version of the above mentioned light phenomena. The small elements on the strings are to reflect the light and therefore generate a vibrating visual effect, a sort of “dancing lightâ€? on the strings moved by a little wind. This is also a metaphor and synesthesic form of music and the invert translation of the light effects in the forest. Construction is sited on the edge of the forest as a kind of transition in-and-out the forest.

8

Installation_3 Installation is sited on the dam near to the highway. It is also built on a 10m x 10m ground plan divided by a north-south and east-west axis. This ground plan is fitted to the existing staircase to use the experience of a vertical motion and seeing suddenly the water and the horizon. Construction consists of “flags made by poles and strong fabric to handle the big wind out there. The sonic situation here is dominated by the heavy traffic of the highway and the constant wind. Using this aerial phenomena the flag installation would generate sound to filter the highway and on the other hand being a metaphore of sailing and being on water in front of the endless horizon.

NATURE PARK AMAGER multilayered experiences - a green space strategy The aim of this project is to create a green space strategy for Nature Park Amager. This strategy functions as a guideline for the further development of the area. Presently there are several issues that need to be dealt with. These range from user conflicts over lack of identity to fragmentation of the park. Based on the layered site analysis the focal problem was identified and an action plan was developed proposing possible solutions to this and other issues. As the land on which the Nature Park is located was created artificially merely 70 years ago. The natural environment that developed on the site is still very young. It is continuously evolving. It is characterized by wide open meadows with grazing cows and stretches of wetlands which provide habitats for various bird species. The 3000ha open space of Nature Park Amager are strategically well situated southeast of the city center of Copenhagen. In the west it is surrounded by the municipalities of Türnby and Dragør. Nature Park Amager can therefore be understood as an opposite pole to the park of Dyrehaven north of Copenhagen - not only by its location but also by its appearance. https://issuu.com/bttn_t/stacks/e47ba12aa61f44f4932e2679f8a859cd

The historical background of the area is highly connected to military subjects. The closeby located Sundby Overdrev for instance has been used by the military as a training area since 1680. In 1944 the dikes that form the outline of todays Nature Park Amager were built. The area of Kalvebod FĂŚlled has been used by the military until it was taken over by the Nature Agency in 1983. In 1984 the whole area was opened up to the public but there are still reminders of the military history to be found there today. Examples for that are the old bunkers, artificial hills which are former shooting bases and the straight, long roads. Also the names of the roads (Ballonparken, Granatvej, Artillerivej etc.) show the connection to their origin. the bunkers

skyscape ‘The Lack of Identity´ is the major challenge, so this strategy aims to create a common understanding, image and identity for Nature Park Amager. The arguments for the lack of identity were, that this area is very young and has not got any traditions yet. It also has deficits in the powerstructure. The municipalities are lacking a common aim for the area, which is one of the reasons why this park is not yet a ‘brand’ but holds the posibillity to become one. Compared to Dyrehaven north of Copenhagen, the big difference is in the image and understanding that the users have of the park. When people go to Dyrehaven they know exactly what to expect. They know about its history and what they can do there. Many people don’t know the history about Amager, however. They dont know which activities can be done out there and are ignorant about the values of the area. In order to create a clear image of this Nature Park, it needs to gain identity, become a brand and promote an image with a clear story.

“My vision is a multilayered park which provides unique, inspiring nature experiences and life changing benefits. A park where I can choose between different kinds of outdoor activities, but also experience the wild nature. It would be nice if my kids could also learn something about their environment while having fun out there. And of course, we have to take care about the protected areas and species which are under conservation”

“I like it oldschool!”

The Nature Park Amager Brand is a tool to tell the story of the evolution of the park wtih it’s history and former use and development of cultural land. It also has the purpose of inviting and actuate current and potential users to visit the area in the future. The brand’s mission is to hold and communicate the values and become a strong and recognizable “sign” which people know and remember. The action plan`s purpose is also to translate nature values, through two layers, interactive and analogue. The aim is to strengthen the relationship between man and nature and to make people recognize the unseen values of the nature park. This new generation of users will get a better understanding of the need for nature protection and preservation in combination with a balanced use of the area. To increase the recreational, educational and natural values in Nature Park Amager already existing elements have to be improved. The accessibility and visibility of the park has to be strengthened and the design of the facilities within the park has to be coherent. Furthermore the educational settings have to be widened as well.

DIFFUSE PLUG-IN an urban design project - Budapest

The challenge which the project tries to answer is the lack of access to the water, the problematic access to the site itself, the fragmented situation of the area which is currently like an isolated archipelago. Site is cut off by train line and transportation corridors. Currently there are only 2 spots where one can access. Besides these above mentioned physical issues the project also giving a proposal to trigger a flow of existing and new city functions. This way the currenlty north-focused city life of the district become more balanced and a relevant but relatively small scale, mixed used, lively and vibrant center will emerge here at the southern part.

16

Project area is located in Budapest, Hungary as part of the 22nd district, Budafok-Budateteny, close to the border of the capital city and Pest County. The site is a former landfill which is surrounded by several locally important historical features and natural elements such as the historical garden with its castle from the northwest and the river Danube from the south. Being a “vein of the city, river Danube is really important in Budapest context both in connections and the access to it as well. However it is also a challenge for the whole city because mostly it is used as a transportation corridor on the coasts. There are quite a few cases where the coastline is opened for public spaces or recreational purposes explicitly. The strength of the project area is the rich natural environment, the unused riverside, the closeness of the historical past which gives an identity to the site. These are such opportunities which worth to build upon a concept. The low density - small scale urban fabric is also a mark here.

The concept of the design proposal is a visual and physical attachment, a functional “plug-in” of the area into the surroundings from it is detached currently.

diffuse city functions new nodes better acces to waterfront joints flow

The physical attachment is about to enhance the 2 existing entry points, modifying the locally important bus line and lead it through the site. On the other hand to open a 3rd point to access and reach the area accross this multilayered border which is possible by establishing a bridge or underground corridor. The project is proposing an underground corridor which is attached to an on-surface “promenade” pedestrian zone on the north and attached to a terraced-like square on the south.

CONNECTING THE INLAND a transformation project

The inland of Thy between Bedsted and Sjørring is facing serious challenges of depopulation, a fact which can be experienced strongly in the many vacant buildings in the area. Currently, about 80 vacancies are torn down each year in Thisted Municipality. But there is also a strong sense of local activism and enthusiasm for development among the local dwellers, activists and municipal planners who introduced the inland area during the site visit. The existing local initiatives (related to local communities, canoe rest place facilitation etc.) became the basis of the project. ‘Connecting the inland’ proposes to use the water network of streams and lakes as linking element between existing activities and varied landscape experiences, offering the locals and possible visitors a whole package of activities, suitable for different kinds of age or style of vacation. The station towns Bedsted and Sjørring will function as access points for visitors travelling with public transport and continuing by bike or canoe. Overall ‘Connecting the inland’ will strengthen the existing recreational activities and landscape qualities of the inland, stimulate the social community and promote active ways of living. https://issuu.com/bttn_t/stacks/34eeaf46bee5478d8b0ec80f5a46e243

Ove Lake has a rich life of different animals such as otters and whooper swans the lake is special because of its size and gives a special feeling when sailing from the narrow stream with land on both sides to the open water which make you feel small it has its one silence and atmosphere that you can only reach by being on water, this unique experience could be expressed through a floating shelter, which makes it possible to stay a night on the lake with a fantastic view to the sky and the stars.

Why here on water ? The project chose this place for shelter site to use the advantage of staying on water. By offering the opportunity to spend the night on water and not just pass by would be a strong and unique feature of the inland water experience. The project suggests an easily constructed and practical form for the shelters which would be suitable for various weather circumstances (wind, rain and clear sky) using materials from vacant buildings. With the folding out idea the shelter could be adapted fast to the users claims too; folded form protects from wind and rain or using the unfolded form for stargazing. Nearby there are many opportunities on land as well. One can continue the tour by hiking, biking or horseback riding.

LANDSCAPE : RECLASSIFIED master thesis project

The current regulations and development plans about the project’s focus area - the former Wholesale Market of Budapest, Hungary - are operating with a high density real estate development concept with a relatively low ratio of public green. In contrast, the thesis project proposes a reclassification. By this act the area would become a characteristically public green zone. The concept of the thesis project sets out a scenario which is treating the site by a reclassification method in which a higher ratio of landscape frames the new densification clusters determined for possible urban development in the future. The outcome of the project and the proposal is a landscape strategy plan which is based upon a multiscale analysis. According to the reclassification scenario, the current classification of the area will change. The reclassification will transform the area into a new public green space with ecological and recreational functions and becomes a large scale public riverside green stretch, associated with direct water connection along the 3 km long zone. Over time in the future step by step the project’s program will also affect other city areas beyond the focus site boundaries. The thesis project it putting the focus and goes into detail with a planting design strategy as a frame for further development. The strategy plan’s objective is a new spatial structure and a new landscape but also takes into consideration the possible reuse and refunction of the existing two listed buildings on site on a conceptual level.
