MISSION STATEMENT . . . Enriching the quality of life through recreation, education & preservation.

SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER 2016

Executive Director’s Letter Dear Bourbonnais Township Park District Residents: On November 3rd, 1986 the Bourbonnais Township Park District was created by a referendum vote by a margin of nearly 2 to 1. This is when Lomira Perry’s vision for the future of Perry Farm started becoming a reality. Her wishes were that at least 40 acres be used for a park and the name “Perry” somehow be a part of it. In the past 30 years, our park district has met or surpassed its goals for realizing Lomira Perry’s vision. We all have benefitted from the legacy she left. A legacy is an interconnection across time, with a need for those who have come before us and a responsibility to those who come after us. We take this responsibility seriously here at the BTPD. As original Board Commissioner Harry Burkhalter once said, “Perry Farm was where we got our beginning. It’s not where we end.” To continue to move forward, we need to look back at all our accomplishments during the past 30 years. Make sure you check out our timeline in the middle of the brochure that points out Hollice Clark III Executive Director some outstanding highlights. You will want to make plans to join us at one of our facilities on Thursday, November 3rd for cake and festivities. More details in the near future! We are launching into the most spectacular season of all here at the farm. We are anticipating, along with the community, our 4th annual Scarecrow Contest and Festival. The community involvement has continued to grow leaps and bounds each year. Saturday September 24th is “opening day” of the scarecrow season with the festival from 10:00 AM to noon. Celebrity judging will be taking place along with the People’s Choice voting for $1.00 with all proceeds going to the Presence St. Mary’s Breast Health Center. We will have the sounds of fall with some music and tasty treats to delight your taste buds. Next up is our widely popular “A Night in Sleepy Hollow” with something for everyone. We have Acting Out Theatre Co. reenacting “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” while the other side of the park has thrills and chills on the Haunted Trail. Coming up on November 12th is our 6th annual Turkey Trot – a walk/run for foster kids. We will continue to partner with Starfish Foster Home where all the proceeds go to support this important nonprofit organization. Thanks for all your patience this summer as we upgraded our trails, roadways and parking lots at Perry Farm Park. Many people walk, bike, run & play here every day. We hope the improvements will enhance your experience for many, many years to come. Please join us at the farm this fall as colors explode on our trees. To have the privilege to be a part of Perry Farm in all its autumn glory is truly a gift. Come over and watch a golden autumn sunset and see why living in the Midwest is rather spectacular. My door is always open for suggestions or concerns. Please email me at Hollice@btpd.org or call me at 815-933-9905. We hope to continue to enrich the quality of life in our community for the next thirty years. Hollice Clark III, Executive Director
