Barnes-storming display delivers Reds triumph

Team Chiropracter – Matt Sand

Baldock Town 2 Edgware Town 0 - By Mark Giles (Gilesy) On-loan front man Kieran Barnes produced a match-winning display as the Reds claimed their second league victory of the season on Saturday. The youngster notched both goals in a blistering start to the second half by Town at New Lamb Meadow before being denied a possible hat-trick when forced off by injury. Edgware had looked a useful outfit in a first half that showed the Reds having to do their share of defending, while mustering a number of corners of their own. But the home side came out after the interval with great attacking intent and it was not long before the rewards came. Barnes might have done better than hitting the side-netting after beating the offside trap, then Lewis Barker went close with a shot on the turn. The early second-half pressure paid dividends on 50 minutes when the speedy Barnes again found space, turned his defender and chipped cheekily goalwards. The Edgware keeper got a palm to the ball having gone full stretch but could not prevent it sailing into the net. Only four minutes later, Barnes yet again raced clear. And his obvious confidence was reflected in him rounding not only the keeper but also a defender before he coolly slotted home. Town introduced Alfie Barker on the hour and Louis Lee followed him on, but it was a sad moment when Barnes had to leave the action, the fans desperate to see him complete what would have been a deserved treble. The home side, though, comfortably saw out time in a display that offers great encouragement for the tests ahead.. Bull Dog Hat-Trick! North Greenford Utd 2 Baldock Town 4 – Pinky Parker Baldock were 0-1 up within 6 minutes at North Greenford Utd after Kieran Barnes put the reds ahead. It was 52 minutes later when Russell Bull went on a 15 minute rampage and scored a hattrick! It sealed the deal even though NGU scored and were awarded a penalty. Barker Double Trouble Sub! Cockfosters 0 Baldock Town 2 – Pinky A very wet afternoon at Cockfosters saw the reds battle hard against a tough away team. Then the gaffer said – this game has got Alfie written all over it and so on to the field came The Colonel. Never has the gaffer been so right! Barker went on and scored 2 goals in 7 minutes firmly putting Baldock in control! Giving the team a 3 point victory and a rise to 7 th place in the league table!

Today is Non-League Day! By Mike Godfrey www.mike-godfrey.co.uk

In case you were not aware, today is “Non-League Day” where clubs often try different cut-price schemes to entice more people through the gate. There are no Premier League or Championship games taking place this weekend, so what better than moseying on down to your local non-league ground and seeing what is on offer? You never know, you might just enjoy yourself! But getting more bodies through the gate on a regular basis remains to be a recurring headache for many a non-league club. Gone are the days of bumper crowds flocking into local grounds and it is all to easy nowadays to sit in your armchair at home and get your football fix watching Sky Sports or BT. But different clubs continue to try innovative schemes, all in an effort to hear those turnstiles regularly clicking and clanking. Have you seen our landlords Arlesey Town’s new loyalty card scheme? Upon entry to their home matches you get a stamp on a loyalty card and initially, when you accrue five stamps, you are entitled to free entry to a match. Upon collecting blocks of five further stamps you can claim entry with a free food item, entry with a free drink and if you attend every home game, you will then be able to attend the club’s end of season bash! Loyalty cards are certainly nothing new and are regularly used in coffee shops and numerous other retail outlets, but this is the first time I have heard of a football club trying such a scheme. In my opinion it is a master stroke – surely any idea to gain more numbers regularly through the turnstiles is to be applauded and encouraged?

It may be asked whether it is financially viable to offer such a scheme, but if my information is correct, the Blues normally charge an extra £1 for entry than Baldock Town, so in the long run they will not be out of pocket. Are there any other ideas to increase gates currently taking place? Over the last few seasons, our neighbours Hitchin Town have tried to increase support by holding “Pay What You Want” fixtures and this idea is being used by other clubs today. Basically you can throw any amount into the bucket and be given admission. Presumably the idea is that once you are in the ground, then you may spend more money on refreshments, raffle tickets, memorabilia etc. I would suggest that the majority of regular supporters would still pay the standard admission charge and that the only people paying a lower amount are occasional fans or potential newbie’s. But aren’t these the people you are trying to attract hoping that they will return at a future date paying the full price? So offering the chance to pay what you want is just a loss leader, again not losing any revenue as such. Trying different ideas to increase attendances at this level of football is nothing new however. Back in the depths of time, when I was entering my teenage years (a long time ago), I was a regular supporter of Guildford City FC who at the time were a fairly successful Southern League side getting regular gates of 1,500+ for most home matches. I remember at one home match, the club offered all younger supporters a free comic and ice cream as they entered the ground (just as well it was early in the season and a warm and sunny afternoon). The idea on the whole was a winner as the attendance that day was far higher than normal, but sadly they grossly underestimated the number of youngsters who came along, running out of supplies long before the 3pm kick-off time. It caused quite an outcry in the local press and the management of the club were majorly criticised for their mistake. In hindsight it didn’t do the club any good in the long run because as time went on they lost support and within a couple of years they merged with another local side, eventually going out of business. As long as there is lower level football, there will continue to be weird and wonderful ideas by clubs to increase attendances. Non-League Day is an excellent way in achieving an increased footfall, but you can only feel sorry for clubs who today have been given away fixtures. Maybe there should be another Non-League Day later in the season, just for them? Please note that any opinions made in this column are not necessarily those shared by Baldock Town Football Club.

Our Visitors today Brimsdown FC

After Brimsdown Rover merged with Enfield 1893 in 2010, there was no representative Non-League football for the Brimsdown area. In 2013, Lee Okugbeni, with help from Osbourne Powell and Peter Omondi, formed BRIMSDOWN FC to complete in the MOLTEN SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE using the secondary pitch on The Downs as out home pitch, after successfully running an u18s the year before. February 2018 New management of Ahmet Toygun and Yilmaz Celik decided to take over the club, both have been in football over ten years. Ahmet Toygun has been managing and coaching his own football academy called North London Football Academy. Yilmaz has been playing football over ten years on Sundays and successfully runs his own supermarket business. Both have bright and exciting plans for the club, mission statement is to bring the club up as high in the non-league football in 5 years time!
