From Diana McLellan, "Betty Beale, queen of Washington 'Society' reporters for almost half a century, took me under her wing when I began covering parties, Embassies, the White House etc. for The Washington Star in about 1970. Years later, in '93, her publisher asked me to edit 'Power At Play,' her 'Memoir of Parties, Politicians and the Presidents in my Bedroom.' It detailed her long affair with Adlai Stevenson, friendships with everyone from Jackie to Nancy to the Emperor of Ethiopia. She flatly refused to reveal her age, even to me, even then, even off the record. (I didn't find that out 'til she died in June of 2006, at 94.)
