• Overall the BSU women’s hockey team has had success against the Wayne State Warriors, compiling a 16-4-2 record. • Last season Beavers hosted the Warriors and ended up splitting the weekend. In the first game of the weekend, Bemidji State gained a 3-1 victory behind three second-period goals. In the following night, the Warriors fought back and walked away with a 6-1 win over the Beavers. • This will be the sixth time Bemidji State will have played Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich.

Scouting Wayne State University

• In their first competitive action since last year’s 3-1 loss to Robert Morris in the quarterfinal game of the CHA Tournament, the Warriors defeated the York Lions, 6-0, in last Friday night’s exhibition opener. • Shots on goal favored WSU, 30-19. The Warriors killed all nine penalties they were assessed and scored three power-play goals as well as a short-handed tally by Lauren Ragen. • Julie Ingratta scored twice as part of a three-point night. Head Coach Steve Sertich Steve Sertich enters his fifth season as head coach of the BSU women’s hockey program. At the end of the 2009-10 regular season, Sertich was honored as the 2010 WCHA Coach of the Year as the team soared to new heights never-beforeseen at Bemidji State. Finishing tied for fifth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with a 12-19-7 overall record (9-12-7-3 WCHA), the team claimed its first-ever playoff victory. The team eventually won its playoff series and made the debut trip to the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF in Minneapolis, before bowing out after losing to the eventual National Champions Minnesota Duluth. In the spring on 2010, Seritch was inducted into the Minnesota High School Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame. The honor, which is bestowed by the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association, is given to coaches that have outstanding contributions to the sport of hockey in the state of Minnesota. Under his tutelage, the BSU women’s hockey team has posted its most conference wins in a single season, with nine in both 2009-10 and 2006-07. Sertich has also coached two Olympians while at Bemidji State, Nina Ziegenhals who played for Team Germany in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and Zuzana Tomickova who played for Team Slovakia in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver During summer 2008, Sertich served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s Under-22 Select team that played in the annual three-game Women’s Under-22 Series with Canada, which took place from Aug. 20-23. Sertich was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1973-75, and played on a team which trained in Bemidji. He was also a member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic team, which finished fifth at the Innsbruck, Austria games. The U.S. team recorded wins over Finland and Poland en route to a 2-3 finish in Group A. He also played two years in the German Professional League, spending the 1974-75 season as captain for Fussen and two seasons from 1978-80 playing for Nurnburg. Sertich is a 1974 graduate of Colorado College with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and humanities. He received a master’s degree in elementary education from Minnesota State in 1999.

Last time out

• The Bemidji State women’s hockey team out-shot the Toronto Jr. Aeros to earn a 4-2 exhibition win on Sept. 24 at the Neilson-Reise Arena. The Beavers used all three goalies in net, stopping a combined 21 of 23 shots. • The Beavers jumped out first with a goal from Kim Lieder (Jr., Def., Eagan, Minn.) with Tess Dusik (Fr., For., Oak Bluff, Manitoba) assisting on the play. Jamie Hatheway (So., For., Trenton, Ontario) was able to increase the BSU lead to 2-0 on a short-handed goal. • On the power play, Molly Arola (So., For., Walker, Minn.) put home a rebound shot on a five-on-three to make the score 3-1. Erika Wheelhouse (So., Def., Crookston, Minn.) and Marlee Wheelhouse (Jr., Def., Crookston, Minn.) assisted on the goal. Lauren Williams (Jr., For., Egan, Minn.) added an insurance goal off a turnover to give the Beavers their fourth goal. • In net for the Beavers, Zuzana Tomcikova (Jr., Bratislava, Slovakia) faced just 6 shots in the first period, stopping all 6. Alana McElhinney (Jr., G., Calgary, Alberta) stopped 11 of 13 in the second period. The two goals scored by the Jr. Aeros both came on the power play as BSU was assessed four penalties in the second period alone. In final period, Jessica Havel (So., G., Grand Rapids, Minn.) took her turn in net stopping all 4 shots on net in the period.

Slovakian Sensation

• After a stellar freshman campaign Beaver goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova made an even better sophomore debut gathering 795 saves on 848 shots. She currently had a .938 save percentage on the season while recording a 2.06 goals against average. • Tomcikova returned from the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver where she played in all five games for the Slovakian National Women’s Ice Hockey Team. In those five games she faced 235 shots on goal, more than any other goaltender, male or female, in the 2010 Winter Games. • She was nominated for the 2010 Patty Kazmaier Award. An award of The USA Hockey Foundation that recognizes the accomplishments of the most outstanding player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey each season. • She recorded her eighth-career shutout on Jan. 23 at Ohio State stopping 38 shots. • She was also named to the 2009-10 and 2008-09 All-WCHA Second Team, which was the highest individual award won by a BSU women’s hockey player.

Tremendous Trio

• Erin Cody, Erin Johnson and Annie Bauerfeld accounted for 46 percent of the offensive production for the Beavers last season. • Six of Johnson’s goals came on the power play. • Six of the ten game-winning goals came from the trio, four from Johnson (Oct. 30 vs. Wayne State, Nov. 7 vs. Minnesota State, Dec. 5 vs. North Dakota, & Jan. 9 vs Minnesota State), one from Bauerfeld (Oct. 16 vs. Wisconsin), and one from Cody (Dec. 6 vs. North Dakota). • On Dec. 9 Cody was recognized for her efforts in the series against North Dakota being named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. She scored four goals, including a game winner in OT, over the weekend against the Sioux.

D-Line Express

• Sisters and defensive linemates Erika Wheelhouse and Marlee Wheelhouse recorded a total of 32 blocks over the weekends against Wisconsin and Ohio State last season. Including a total of 15 blocked shots in the 1-0 shutout against the Badgers. • Erika was recognized by the WCHA for her efforts in the Jan. 8-9 weekend against Minnesota State being named Rookie of the Week. Wheelhouse contributed two assists, blocked nine shots and helped Bemidji State blank the Mavericks on all nine of their power-play chances in the two-game series. • The Bemidji State defense blocked a total of 770 shots last season.

Shootout Veterans

• BSU won three of the six shootouts that it entered in the 2009-10 campaign lending to the success in the standings that the Beavers have experienced this season. • Bemidji State was first in the league for having competed in the most rounds of a shootout with 36. Minnesota State was the second-most with 27.

Sharing the Wealth Defensive Players of the Week Rookies of the Week

• The Beavers had 17 players who have recorded points last season. • The 17 players combined to score 175 points for BSU.

Empty Box

• The Nov. 13, 2009 game against St. Cloud State was the first game BSU has ever gone 60 minutes without being called for a penalty. • There was only one penalty called during the game and technically no player on the ice was assessed. The lone infraction was on St. Cloud State for too many players on the ice.

Helper from the crease

• Alana McElhinney became the fourth goalie in BSU women’s hockey history to record a point when notching an assist on Jan. 29 at St. Cloud State. Past tenders on the score sheet include Jill Luebke (2A), Janet Hicks (1A) and Bre Dedrickson (1A).

Breakin’ Records

• Bemidji State took part in the Culver’s Camp Randall Hockey Class outdoor game against the Wisconsin Badgers on Feb. 6, 2010. The game broke the single-game attendance record for a NCAA women’s hockey game, drawing 8,263 fans. The previous record was set at 6,889 on Jan. 8, 2010 between Northeastern University and the University of New Hampshire in an outdoor game at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass.
