Bemidji State Hockey Game 24 - Bemidji State at Denver

Magness Arena • Denver, Colo. • Jan. 14, 2012 • 7:07 p.m. Bemidji State notables: uBemidji State dropped its 10th game of the year last night with a 6-3 loss at Denver. The Beavers fall to 11-10-2 overall and 5-8-2 in WCHA play and sit tied with Wisconsin (10-9-2; 5-8-2 WCHA) for ninth in the league standings with 12 points. uBemidji State’s defensive unit surrendered six goals last night matching a season-high. The five goals allowed in the second period stand as the highest opponent single-period goal total for BSU since Minnesota Duluth scored seven in the second period of a 12-0 victory at Bemidji State Dec. 7, 2002. uThe Beavers dip to 3-7-1 on the road this season. Five of BSU’s next nine games are road contests. uThe loss also snaps Bemidji State’s longest winning streak since Oct. 24-Nov. 7 of the 2009-10 season at five games. uBSU was led by Brance Orban and Kyle Brodie who each netted a goal and an assist. It stands as the third multi-point game of the season and fourth of Orban’s career, while it was the first for Brodie’s as a Beaver. uKyle Brodie, who was playing in front of friends and family as a Northglenn, Colo. native, doubled his career point production (3-1=4) last night and picked up his first collegiate assist. uBrance Orban extended his current assist streak to a season-long three games last night. uWith a power-play goal, Brance Orban became the team’s leader in point production on the man advantage this season. He now has 2-6=8 points on the power play in 2011-12. uAfter playing the first six games of his collegiate career without a single point, Danny Mattson has scored in each of the Beavers’ last three contests and has 1-3=4 points during that stretch. uJunior forward Jordan George leads the team with 19 points (12g-7a). Including last night’s team-leading 12th goal of the season, his first since Dec. 10, George has 11 points (6g-5a) in BSU’s last 10 games. BSU is unbeaten (5-0-2) when he posts an assists this season. uJordan George is just one point shy of his 90th collegiate point. He is now tied with Ryan Huddy (200206) for ninth on BSU’s Division I-era scoring list. uWith an assist last night, sophomore forward Radoslav Illo enters tonight’s game toting a career-best fourgame point streak, during which he’s netted 2-2=4 points and has an assist in each game. uBeavers are 18-2-3 since 2008-09 when Ben Kinne scores a goal. This season Kinne has seven goals and BSU is 5-1-1 in those contests. uThe Beavers’ got a goal and an assist from its defensive corps last night. Beaver defensemen have now scored in 18 of BSU’s 23 games this season and have posted 11 goals and 31 assists (11-31=42) to account for over 26 percent of BSU’s total scoring with an average of 1.82 points per game. uBSU out shot Denver last night 30-24. It marks just the sixth time the season Bemidji State has out shot its opponents and the fourth time in BSU’s last five games. However, last night’s loss marked the first time BSU has lost a game in which it registered more shots on goal than its opponent. For the year, BSU trails its opponents in shots on goal 683-544, which includes a 485-356 differential in 15 WCHA games. BSU is now 6-9-2 when being out shot, 5-1-0 when out shooting its opponent and 1-0-0 when shots are even. uThis season BSU has just one short-handed goal and that came off the stick of injured Sam Rendle Oct. 7 at Miami--the Beavers’ first game of 2011-12. Only two players in tonight’s lineup have a short-handed goal Ben Kinne (3/7/09) and Jordan George (2/12/10). Since moving to the NCAA Division I level for the 1999-2000 season, BSU lowest single-season total for shorties is three in 2002-03, 2007-08 and 2010-11. uBrad Hunt has accumulated 80 assists during his first 135 games as a Beaver to sit atop the BSU Division I assists list and hold down second on BSU’s all-time assist-scoring by defensemen list. Terry Mattson (1986-89), father of current Beaver freshman Danny Mattson, currently holds that title after piling up 81 helpers during his collegiate career. uThe last time Brad Hunt scored a point was Dec. 17--a streak spanning three games. That might not seem like much, but last time he was held without a point in four consecutive games was Nov. 27-Dec. 11, 2009--Hunt’s sophomore season. uBemidji State was 1-for-5 (.200) on the power-play last night. BSU is now 15-for-71 (.211) on the powerplay this season and 11-for-45 (.224) in the WCHA to rank fourth in league play. uFollowing a 3-for-4 night on the penalty-kill, BSU is now 82-96 (.854) on the season to sit 10th in the country, which includes snuffing out 55-of-64 (.859) in WCHA play to lead the league in penalty-kill efficiency.
