Bemidji State Hockey Game 4 - Bemidji State at (7/8) Colorado College World Arena • Colorado Springs, Colo. • October 15, 2011 • 7:07 p.m. Bemidji State notables: uBemidji State opened its second WCHA season with a 3-1 loss at Colorado College last night. The last marked the first to CC since a Jan. 8, 2008 5-4 loss at World Arena and snapped the Beavers’ two-game unbeaten streak versus the Tigers. uAfter last night’s loss, the Beavers’ all-time mark in conference season openers dipped to 26-16-1 and is now 0-2-0 in the WCHA opener. BSU is 50-30-5 in league-opening series. uLast night’s loss drops BSU to 1-2-0 versus nationally-ranked teams this season. In 2010-11 the Beavers played 17 games against teams holding down one of the nation’s top 15 spots and posted a 7-8-2 mark in those games. Since the BSU made the jump to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1999-2000, it is 15-46-4 (.266) versus teams in the top-15. With that said, BSU is now 12-11-2 (.541) versus the top 15 since the beginning of 2008-09. uLast night’s goal-scoring total was the Beavers’ lowest scoring output of the young season. The Beavers’ odds of winning with just one goal are pretty slim. Since the beginning of the 1999-00 season, BSU has won only two times when scoring one goal, posting a 2-55-7 record in those games. uThrough three games and 60 minutes of first period play, BSU has yet to score a goal in the first period this season. The team has four goals in second and third period play this season for a total of eight goals. uMitch Cain scored the Beavers’ only goal last night, registering the marker in his first collegiate game. The last Beaver to net a goal in his BSU debut was Matt Pope, Oct. 22, 2004 versus Ferris State. uJake Areshenko recorded his first assist of the season last night giving him 1-1=2 points on the season. Now two of his career 11 assists have come in three games versus CC. uLast night’s match up with the Tigers was the Beavers’ first contest of 2011-12 Olympic ice. BSU was 4-40 on the 200-by-11 a year ago, but playing on Olympic ice has traditionally not been a strong suit of BSU. Since making the jump to the major college hockey ranks in 1999-2000, BSU is 9-32-3 on Olympic ice. uEight of the Beavers’ first 10 games this season come on the road. Last year BSU was 7-9-2 on the road, including a 7-4-3 stretch on the road after Jan. 7, 2011. The Beavers are already 1-2-0 in 2011-12. uForward Brance Orban logged his second assist of the season last night to match his season totals from each of his first two campaigns in the green and white. He now has 4-6=10 career points. He is currently second on the team in assist scoring with 0-2=2 this season. uThe Beavers’ got an assist from its blueline unit last night. Beaver defensemen have now score in each of the Beavers’ first three games accounting for two goals and four assists (2-4=6) and accounting for 33 percent of the Beavers’ total scoring. BSU defenders contributed 11-47=58 points a year ago, scoring in 28 of BSU’s 38 games for an average of 1.52 points per game. uLast night the Beavers were out shot 28-26. BSU has been out shot in two of three games in 2011-12 and trails opponents 74-71 this season. BSU is 0-2-0 when getting outshot. uThe Beavers enter tonight’s game seeking their first victory in Colorado Springs since a 3-2 triumph Dec. 29, 2006. BSU is 1-4-0 all-time versus CC on its home ice in a series dating back to 2000-01. BSU is 2-4-1 versus CC all-time. uDespite being held scoreless last night, seniors Jamie MacQueen and Shea Walters have fared well when facing the Tigers. In three career games versus CC, Walters has three assists and MacQueen has a pair of goals with one going for a game winner. uDanny Mattson and Mitch Cain each made their debuts for the Beavers last night. Mattson, a Minneapolis, Minn. native comes to BSU after a USHL career playing for Omaha, Chicago and Youngstown. Cain comes to BSU from Fort Frances, Ontario and played 2010-11 in Des Moines of the USHL uThe BSU penalty-kill unit was flawless last night holding CC without a power-play goal in four opportunities. The Beavers are now 12-of-15 (.800) on the kill and have not allowed a power-play goal in its opponents’ last six opportunities. uBemidji State’s power-play unit is still looking to get on track in 2011-12. In three games and eight powerplay changes, the Beavers have just one goal to its credit (1-for-8 (.125)), which includes an 0-for-2 night last night. uIn 2010-11 the Beavers were 4-11-4 (.315) on Fridays with just one win (1-9-3/.192) in Friday league play. Saturday’s were a different story. BSU was 10-7-1 in the final game of a series a year ago. uBSU has compiled an all-time record of 982-488-91 (.658) in 1,561 games.
