vs. No.23 Concordia University - For the second consecutive game the Bemidji State University women’s basketball team was cold on the offensive end, shooting just 33.9 percent in a 80-62 loss to No. 23 Concordia University, St. Paul Friday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game at the BSU Gymnasium. The last time BSU shot so poorly was against the Golden Bears, Jan. 8 in a 85-62 loss where the Beavers shot their season-low 31.7 percent. CU shot lights out Friday, posting a 57.4 percent mark from the field, while shooting a season-best 66.7 percent from downtown. BSU (11-9, 5-8 NSIC) hung with the fast-paced and extremely skilled Golden Bears to start the game, overcoming a CU team that didn’t miss a shot until after four minutes ran off the clock. With 13:46 remaining in the first half, BSU was down 15-9. A 5-0 run by the Golden Bears gave them their first double-digit lead of the game. With 11:07 left on the clock, sophomore Taylor Davis (G/F, Crookston, Minn.) converted on a

Freshman center Emily Kaus (Eagan, Minn.) scored four points and added three rebounds and a block in that time span. That run was the only shinning moment for BSU in the half, as SCSU scored to break the tie with 7:38 remaining and never relinquished the lead the rest of the way. The Huskies got the advantage to as large as 10 with 2:19 left, but a sophomore Sydney Epema (G, Crookston, Minn.) trademark 3-pointer cut the deficit to six by the halftime buzzer, with the scoreboard reading 34-28. points from its bench in the half. The Beavers chipped-way at St. Cloud State’s lead during the early stages of the second half, finally tying the game 40-40 with 14:21 left off the hands of a senior guard Kim Rosecrans (Crosby, Minn.) 3-pointer. SCSU got the lead back with 13:09 on the clock. Every time the Huskies started to get going and build a lead, Hebrink would fire a 3-point basket back at them. She hit three 3-pointers in the span of 4:30, including two on consecutive possessions, with the last one tying the contest 53-53 with 7:39 remaining. The score remained tied until freshman Jessie Althoff (C, Becker, Minn.) joined the 3-point party and dropped a bomb to make the score 56-53 with 6:19 left in regulation. The bucket proved to be the spark BSU needed as it went up five after two sophomore Taylor Davis (G/F, Crookston, Minn.) free throws. A 5-2 run by SCSU cut the Beaver lead to two with 3:52 remaining, but freshman guard Katie Pettit (Howard Lake, Minn.) increased the lead to four with two free throws after driving the lane and drawing a foul. A Hebrink lay-up with 2:49 left put BSU up 64-58 and in the driver’s seat for the rest of the game. The Huskies got two free throws with 1:59 on the clock, but Pettit came down on the next BSU possession and converted on a running jumper through the lane to put the Beavers up 66-60. The Huskies turned the ball over on its next trip down the court and was forced to play the foul game, leading to a 70-63 BSU victory. The win improved BSU to 5-7 when trailing at the half this season. Hebrink scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half, while adding a team-high three steals. Epema led the team in rebounds with six, scoring seven points. Thompson had all nine of her points on 3-pointers, adding a career-high seven assists. Extra Frames: The Beavers pushed the Dec. 4 game against MSU Moorhead to two overtimes before falling 75-66. BSU had only played four extra sessions in head coach Mike Curfman’s first four years at BSU. Two were against MSU Moorhead and the two were against Minnesota Duluth. The last time BSU played in a double overtime contest was during the 1984-85 season. The Beavers lost the game 74-73 at Minnesota Duluth. No ‘I’ in Team: Eleven different Beavers have played in at least half of the conference games this season and 14 have seen the court. Nine players have recorded at least 100 points overall this season and 11 different players have scored in NSIC play. Road Warriors: The Beavers are 5-3 on the road this season, 3-3 in the NSIC. Last season, BSU didn’t win a single road game and in the past 10 seasons, the most road wins the Beavers have accumulated in a season is five (2007-08 and 2002-03). BSU has recorded four NSIC road wins twice in the past 10 seasons (2006-07 and 2003-04). NCAA National Stats: The Feb. 7 edition of the NCAA Division II national ranking summary placed the Beavers 23rd in 3-point field goals per game (7.4 3-pointers per game), 24th in 3-point percentage (36.4%), 44th in scoring offense (73.0 ppg), and 47th in free throw percentage (73.7%). Freshman Emily Kaus is 28th in blocks per game with 2.0 per contest. Sophomore Sydney Epema is 31st in 3-point field goal percentage at 41.2 percent

7

and 52nd in 3-point field goals made with 2.5 per game. When it Rains it Pours: Sophomore Taylor Davis poured in 31 points, in a performance off the bench, against St. Cloud State Jan. 8. The point total tied her for eighth on BSU’s top game scoring list with Maggie Gernbacher (vs. Colorado State-Pueblo, 2004-05). She was just eight points shy of tying the single game record, held by Amy Lawson (vs. MSU Moorhead, 2007-08). Davis established career-highs in points, field goals made and attempted (14-of-21) and minutes (31).

Mike Curfman

Head Coach - Fifth Season at BSU

M

ike Curfman is in his fifth year as head women’s basketball coach for the Beavers. Curfman has directed Bemidji State University to a 43-68 overall record (.387) in his four seasons while posting a 25-45 (.357) mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Entering his fifth season as head coach, Curfman becomes the third-longest tenured coach in the program’s history, trailing only Doreen Zierer who coached 11 seasons (1990-2002) and Ruth Howe who coached the programs ‘first 10 seasons (1967-77). Curfman is tied for fourth on BSU’s all-time coaching victories list. He trails Zierer (129), Howe (95), Joan Campbell (70) and is tied with Mary McDonald (43). The 2008-09 season was the worst under Curfman as the team posted a 3-24 overall and 1-19 NSIC record. In the 2007-08 season, BSU finished with a 13-15 record under Curfman, going 9-9 in the NSIC to finish league play in sixth place. With 13 wins it was the third consecutive season the Beavers have had 10 wins or more. The last time a Beaver squad had three consecutive 10-plus win seasons was from 1990-1993. Rejuvenating a program is nothing new to Curfman, he came to Bemidji State after six years at the helm of the University of Minnesota, Crookston program where three times during his tenure his teams set or equaled school records for wins (2000-01, 2001-02 and 2004-05) and racked up 55 victories during his final four seasons. While at UMC, he helped to elevate the program to the NCAA Division II level. After a 1-26 season in 1999-2000, Curfman directed the Golden Eagles to a school-record nine wins in 2000-01 and increased that record by16 the following year. In 2002-03, under Curfman,UMC made the NSIC tournament for the first time, cruising to the championship game before falling to NCAA Tournament bound University of Minnesota Duluth. Most recently his Golden Eagles tied for fourth place in the NSIC posting a league record of 8-6 while going 16-11 overall and making their first ever appearance in the North Central Regional Polls. He has mentored 10 All-Conference selections as a head coach including 2000-01 NSIC Newcomer of the Year and 2001-02 Player of the Year Jessica Forsline and was himself named as the 2002 NSIC Coach of the Year. Curfman’s teams have done equally as well in the classroom. During his tenure at UMC, the Golden Eagles posted at least a 3.0 team grade point average and finished in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Top 10 Academic National Rankings with a team G.P.A. of better than 3.4 in 2004-05. Previous to taking over the UMC program, Curfman was an assistant coach at St. Cloud State University (1994-99), serving as Dr. Lori Ulferts’ top assistant for five seasons. He also coached under Dr. Ulferts at Moorhead State University (1992-94) as an assistant while serving as the head coach of the junior varsity team. He has presented at a number of camps and clinics and is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the Minnesota State High School League Coaches Association. A native of Fosston, Minn., Curfman was an Academic All-America selection for the UMC basketball team while earning his A.A.S. degree. He then moved on to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. where he graduated in 1992 with his B.A. in Business Administration while captaining the Cobber men’s basketball program. In 1994, Curfman earned his MBA in business administration from Moorhead State University (now Minnesota State University Moorhead) while acting as an assistant coach for the Dragons’ women’s basketball program. Curfman currently resides in Fosston with his wife Michelle, his son Caleb and his daughter Emily.
