A student-run grocery collective, the Food Collective is a local  hub for both leadership development and food-related education for its members and patrons.    About the Position:  The Student Kitchen Coalition — a multi-stakeholder coalition spearheaded by and  incorporated within the Food Collective — seeks to scale up the Food Collective’s  existing Community Kitchen model into a project capable of making a magnitude-larger  on campus food security as the linchpin in the UC Berkeley Food Waste Recovery  Coalition ecosystem, developed in concert with the UC Berkeley Basic Needs Security  Committee.   While an ambitious endeavor, we assert — as students and staff participating  intimately in the frontline food systems work at Berkeley — that a Student Kitchen  represents the best opportunity for UC Berkeley to leverage the sum of its existing assets to

create a sustainable campus food system that is ecologically sound, operationally efficient, student-serving, and socially just. As we work toward the establishment of a permanent  space, we are looking to h ost a series of high-profile pop-up meals to build awareness,  materially provide a large number of pay-what-you-want meals, and further  organize students in advocating for the program’s institutionalization on campus.     This student position will be d irectly supervised by full-time staff at the Berkeley  Student Food Collective and the student Board of Directors in concert with the  direction of the Student Kitchen Coalition.    People of color, women, immigrants, people with disabilities, working class and LGBTQ  people are strongly encouraged to apply.    This position was made possible by generous grants provided StopWaste Alameda.     Responsibilities:    ● Work closely with the Food Collective’s full-time Executive Director and student  Board of Directors; report regularly to the Board and its committees    ● Organize at least 4 — and as many as 7 — Student Kitchen pop-up meals at UC  Berkeley, pairing volunteer labor with culinary professionals to create meals  distributed on a $0-$5 donation scale using primarily recovered food.     ● Co-teach educational workshops with Food Collective Education Directors about  reducing food waste with curriculum and facilitation support from Stop Waste.     ● Facilitate Food Collective membership participation in the Stop Waste Challenge,  where members track their food waste for a period of six weeks during the year.     ● Plan and host a culminating event that reflects the experience of members tracking  their food waste with curriculum and facilitation support from Stop Waste.     ● Support in distributing information about addressing food waste to our greater Food  Collective community.

● Emergent tasks as directed by Food Collective full-time staff and Board of Directors in concert with Student Kitchen Coalition.       Desired Qualifications:    ● Experience identifying and analyzing socioeconomic systems of power, privilege,  and oppression  ● Strong ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people  ● Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team  ● Ability to work independently and to foresee, identify, and recommend solutions in  the position’s areas of responsibility  ● Interest in food systems, cooperative governance and/or societies, and  anti-oppression work.
