Your Support During the last academic year, the School community made pledges and gifts totalling £1.3 million to the Bolton School Bursary Fund.

This exceptional generosity enabled the School to spend £2.79 million on means-tested bursarial assistance during the 2017-18 academic year, supporting 342 pupils across the two Senior Schools: • Almost £692,000 was donated by Old Boys and Old Girls • Almost a third of the gifts donated last year were from Charitable Trusts • Just over £182,000 was received as legacy gifts, from five Old Boys and Old Girls who chose to remember the School in their wills • 194 donors supported the Bursary Fund with a regular monthly donation • £10,000 was donated by the two Senior School Parents’ Associations from the proceeds of their joint ball, held in June 2018 • 144 parents of the Class of 2017 donated their child’s deposit back to the School, raising just over £33,000 for the Bursary Fund In addition to the £1.3 million raised for the Bursary Fund, a further £50,000 was donated for the Leverhulme Centenary Scholarships, which support 11 recent leavers with the cost of their university education.

A Personal Story Adam Hall (Class of 2018) joined the Boys’ Division Sixth Form in September 2016, on a fully-funded bursary place. In July 2017, Adam triumphed over 24,000 other entrants from 66 different countries to win the Secondary School category of The Saatchi Gallery Art Prize for Schools 2017 with his mixed media installation, Bolton School: A Modern Tradition. Following his A Level results earlier this summer, in October he took up his place to read Architecture at Jesus College, Cambridge. Adam writes: “Bolton School offered me much more than just a great academic education. I was inspired in my art classes, challenged in my maths and physics and supported wholeheartedly whenever I needed any kind of help. I gained invaluable experience and skills and made a huge network of contacts during my short time in the Sixth Form. I was made to feel welcome and deserving of my

bursary place, and was able to immerse myself fully in School life as a result.” Adam’s Sixth Form bursary was generously sponsored by Nancy (née Gaskell, 1976-1983) and John (1975-1982) Craven, long-standing donors to the Bursary Fund, both of whom attended the School on a Direct Grant. They write: “Bolton School opened up opportunities for us (many years ago!), and we both loved our time there, so we are delighted to be able to play a part in making those opportunities available to the broadest possible group of young people today. It feels fantastic to see someone we have enabled through the bursary scheme to thrive at the School, make full use of his talents and start at a top university as a stepping stone to his professional career.”

This calculation is deliberately prudent, to ensure there are sufficient funds to support both the awards made to current bursary recipients and those planned for future generations of pupils • All bursaries awarded are means-tested, and are allocated according to a strict protocol which includes in-depth financial checks, individual interviews and, where needed, home visits.
