VFW Calabash Post #7288 When were you established? In 1899, the American Veterans of Foreign Service (Columbus, Ohio) and the National Society of the Army of the Philippines (Denver, Colo.) were organized to secure rights and benefits for veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippines War (1899-1902). These two organizations merged in 1914, creating the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW). On May 28, 1936, Congressional Charter incorporated the VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF THE UNITED STATES.

What is VFW? The Veterans of Foreign Wars aka VFW is a nonprofit veterans service organization comprised of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces. The purposes of the VFW are fraternal, patriotic, historical, charitable, and educational; to preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members; to assist worthy comrades; to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead, and to assist their surviving spouses and orphans. The VFW’s Core Values are: • Always put the interests of our members first • Treat donors as partners in our cause • Promote patriotism • Honor military service • Ensure the care of veterans and their families • Serve our communities • Promote a positive image of the VFW • Respect the diversity of veteran opinions

If there were a few things we should know about the Calabash VFW, what would they be? VFW Calabash Post #7288 was Chartered on May 1, 1985 and is one of the largest Posts in North Carolina with 423 regular members (those Veterans that served as described above) and 228 Auxiliary members (those who have family members that served). Through its myriad activities and events, the VFW Calabash Post #7288 raises monies to help support individual veterans and their families; the local community, including but not limited to the Fire Department, EMTs, Homeless Shelters; flood relief efforts; organizations that support veterans causes throughout the state of North Carolina and across the country and other veterans support causes. VFW Calabash Post #7288 continues to be successful in its efforts in large part from the tremendous support it receives from its members, its sponsors and the local community. More information about the Post can be found on its webpage at: www.vfw7288.org.

Ambassadors are the liaisons between the Chamber and Brunswick County. Ambassadors welcome new businesses in the area, provide information on becoming a chamber member and check in with current members on an ongoing basis. These volunteers are an extension of the Chamber staff, supporting new and renewing members through active participation in the community. They are respected business professionals who champion the Chamber each and every day.
