Hope Harbor Home What is the Mission of Hope Harbor Home? Hope Harbor Home strives to break the cycle of domestic and sexual violence in Brunswick County, NC with safe shelter, advocacy and education.

What services does Hope Harbor Home provide? 24-Hour Crisis Hotline (910) 754-5856 -This Hotline is always answered in person by someone who can talk to a caller in confidence about domestic violence. The Hotline can be the first step for many victims in the journey to stop a lifetime of abuse. Empowerment Support Group - Hope Harbor’s Empowerment Support Group is available to current and past victims of domestic violence, in or out of the shelter. Ending the abuse requires a total commitment to a safe future. Around-the-Clock Safe Shelter  - A roof over our head, a place where we know our children are safe from physical violence and shelter is such a basic human need, we often take it for granted. But this most basic of human needs is an important factor in getting a victim away from an abuser. For women and their children in immediate danger from an abuser,  Hope Harbor Home offers not only safe shelter, but also guidance through the steps toward an independent life for themselves and their families. Victim Advocacy -Hope Harbor Victim Advocates assess clients’ risk factors and may offer emergency shelter in the initial phase, to remove themselves and families from a dangerous situation. Navigating the legal system is a large part of the challenge that lies ahead of each victim. Trained victim advocates at Hope Harbor are available to discuss domestic violence and help connect victims with all the sources of public and private assistance available to them. Hope Harbor employs three full-time advocates, one of which is fluent in Spanish. Community education and outreach programs -Hope Harbor staff members are active in the Brunswick County community raising awareness of the issues and signs of domestic abuse. Programs to schools and civic organizations promoting nonviolence and addressing such issues as: • Bullying • Safe Dating • Good Touch / Bad Touch • Non-Violent Conflict Resolution • Respect for Others Hope Chest Thrift Stores  -Three Hope Chest Thrift Stores in Brunswick County offer gently used high-quality clothing, housewares, furniture, books, collectibles and other items to the public. Profits of the Hope Chests – located at Leland, Oak Island and Holden Beach – provide vital financial support for Hope Harbor Home’s programs, domestic violence victims and their children. The stores offer the community at-large a virtually free way to contribute to the betterment of their community, simply by cleaning out their closets and garages and donating items for sale at one of the area Hope Chest Thrift Stores.

How is Hope Harbor Funded? Donations, state support, local support, etc. Hope Harbor Home is funded in a variety of ways. Most administrative costs are funded by government grants that are applied for on a yearly basis.  We also receive private grants that typically go toward the betterment of our office and shelter such as buildings and grounds needs as well as updating to ensure safety and code standards.  We also rely heavily on the support of local community members in the form of donations of items, time, and supplies.  Donations are typically used directly in our shelter, unless items are donated to be sold in our local thrift stores which provides essential financial assistance toward the clients we work with.  The bottom line, is that no donation is to small and everything helps when it comes to providing a safe future for our community

What is the one thing you would like readers to know about Hope Harbor Home? If I could leave the members of Brunswick County with one thought, it would be that domestic violence IS happening. It's happening in your neighborhoods, workplace, and communities.  Studies show that 1 out of every 4 women have been a victim to some sort of intimate partner violence in their lifetimes. That means that between your sister, mom, neighbor, and best friend, someone you know finds this to be a personal issue. If we don't stand up for our friends and families, who will we stand up for?

For more information on Hope Harbor Home or ways you can help, check out their website at hopeharborhome.org and sign up for their monthly newsletter: Domestic Violence in our Hometown.

Movement Works

Ambassadors are the liaisons between the Chamber and Brunswick County. Ambassadors welcome new businesses in the area, provide information on becoming a chamber member and check in with current members on an ongoing basis. These volunteers are an extension of the Chamber staff, supporting new and renewing members through active participation in the community. They are respected business professionals who champion the Chamber each and every day. Each month, we recognize an Ambassador who has shown unwavering support for our business community and the Chamber.

Maria Denney NY Life Insurance Company Brunsco Chamber Ambassador

"I enjoy being an ambassador because this is my way of saying thank you to the small business owners and the community. I am able to meet other business owners in the community by stopping in their business to say hello and thanking them for being a member of our chamber. This allows me to be visible to the community so when they are in need of my services they will think of me and my business. Giving my time and showing that I care about others is who I am as a person and a small business owner." To find out more about these or any other services, programs or events, contact the Chamber at 910-754-6644
