SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

The Gulf Coast continues to attract thousands of visitors each year, and with good reason. The beaches are white, the waters are clear and blue and the beachside towns offer visitors a host of things to see and do. Over the years, we’ve recommended the restaurants, museums, festivals, parks, shops, resorts and attractions of our favorite nearby beaches. This year, we’ve compiled a list highlighting all of our favorite beachside destinations from our past two years of issues, eliminating only those businesses that have since closed their doors. With more than 250 places to visit between Mississippi’s Bay St. Louis and Florida’s Apalachicola, we suggest you start packing. Fall will be here before you know it!

Mississippi’s Front Yard

Gulfport, Miss., rebuilds and experiences a downtown renaissance. By Barry Wise Smith

In the six years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Mississippi Gulf Coast, coastal communities have made major strides toward repairing the area’s damaged tourism industry. Major attractions like the nationally acclaimed, Frank Gehry-designed Ohr-O’Keefe Museum and Jefferson Davis’ Beauvoir have been painstakingly rebuilt. Casinos are bigger than ever, there are golf courses aplenty and most businesses and restaurants damaged in the storm are thriving. This year, the city of Gulfport reopened its port facility, with Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour hailing the project as the largest economic development project in the state’s history. The rebuilding of the Port of Gulfport, the third-busiest container port on the Gulf of Mexico, is estimated to create more than 16,000 jobs and generate more than $1.6 billion annually in direct revenue to the local economy. The areas surrounding the port are also experiencing something of a renaissance, with the redevelopment of historic Jones Park and Gulfport’s bustling downtown. The Jones family donated Joseph T. Jones Memorial Park to Gulfport in 1935, with the promise that it would be used solely for recreational purposes. “Jones Park is Mississippi’s front yard,” says Gulfport Mayor George Schloegel. The 26-acre public waterfront park is scheduled to celebrate its grand re-opening in May 2012 but has already begun hosting local events. Plans for Jones Park include a children’s play area with maritime-inspired play equipment and a splash pad, an amphitheater, a 28,000-square-foot pavilion, a small-craft harbor (home to Ship Island Excursions) and waterfront promenade, fisherman’s village, and other green spaces. Located at the crossroads of Highways 49 and 90, Jones Park will be a “central” park for the Mississippi Gulf Coast; a place where families from across the Coast and visitors can come for entertainment and recreation. “We are extremely excited about Jones Park,” Schloegel says. Across Highway 90, Gulfport’s downtown is also undergoing a serious rebirth. A $4.4-million façade grant program—the largest in U.S. history—has rebuilt more than 80 building fronts, and a recently completed $7-million streetscape restoration project is paving the way for the openings of a number of new businesses, bars and restaurants in downtown, making it a new coastal nightlife destination. “Downtown Gulfport is thriving in a way we haven’t seen in nearly four decades,” Schloegel says. In May, Gulfport hosted the first annual Gulfport Music Festival featuring popular acts Train, Flo Rida, Montgomery Gentry and Sean Kingston, among others, in downtown Gulfport. More than 20,000 people came over two days, and plans are on for next year with a possible move to Jones Park. So, get down to the coast, and enjoy Mississippi’s front yard.

Dauphin Island brings visitors back to the basics of beach vacations: surf, scenery and seafood. Just 33 miles south of Mobile, the eastern portion of the 14-mile-long island boasts white sand beaches, local seafood and several natural and historic attractions. A few things visitors won’t find on Dauphin Island: traffic lights, rows and rows of high-rise hotels, chain restaurants and amusement parks. Dauphin Island is not the place for a wild beach getaway or actionpacked family vacation. It’s more of a destination for those who truly long to “get away from it all.” “Folks and kids either love this and discover how to entertain themselves or hate the slow pace,” says Marion Laney, who’s been a full-time resident since 2004. In addition to his Dauphin Island real estate business, Laney is the director of photography for Good Eats, a show hosted by Alton Brown on The Food Network. While there are no hotels, visitors can choose from a plethora of beachfront rental houses and condos or camp out at the Dauphin Island campground. “The road ends on Dauphin Island and, like many islands, we attract interesting folks from around the country. This variety is the secret sauce we islanders savor and protect,” Laney says. School children from all over the Southeast are surely no strangers to the wonders of Dauphin Island. For years, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and its public aquarium have been favorite field-trip destinations. Bird enthusiasts will appreciate the town’s 2008 distinction as “America’s Birdiest Small Coastal City.” The entire island, home to 347 species of birds, is designated as a bird sanctuary and serves as a migration point for winged travelers on their way to South America. The pet-friendly island is also home to a 7-mile-long bike trail, a golf course, and Fort Gaines, site of the Battle of Mobile Bay. Additionally, Bellingrath Gardens and Home—a 1930’s estate surrounded by colorful blooms and an osprey habitat—is only a 15-minute drive off the island. Advice for maximizing a trip to Dauphin Island? Leave the pile of work behind, pack an unfinished book and get ready to discover the deserted beaches and charm of a real Gulf Coast fishing village.

If it wasn’t for the expanse of silky white sand and turquoise water in the distance, those cruising along Highway 30-A in South Walton County might just think they’ve landed in Miami’s South Beach or Palm Springs instead of Seagrove Beach, Fla., thanks to a new landmark at Scenic 395. The “V” restaurant boasts all the lines and curves you might expect from a mid-century architectural masterpiece, yet it’s just Phase I of the future Hotel Viridian resort. The resort’s plans include two beachfront homes on either side of the large beachside lot across Highway 30-A from the restaurant and boutique hotel suites above and behind the restaurant. The restaurant’s rooftop will eventually boast an infinity pool with an expansive view of the Gulf and cabanas on three sides. There are also plans for a full-service spa. With General Manager Sean Goss, a veteran restaurateur, and Chef David Cunningham, formerly of Commander’s Palace, at the helm, V is in capable hands as it hones its farm-to-table craft. All produce and seafood are sourced from within a 100-mile radius of the restaurant. Free-range, grass-fed meats come from farther afield, but the goal is to make the food as much “of the place” as possible. Dishes are an exercise in restraint with each ingredient a standout in its own right, yet the combinations are inspired. Start with a dozen Apalachicola oysters with a vibrant grating of citrus zest on top and a satsuma-infused mignonette for dipping, or go for the plump miso-crusted diver scallops on a bed of the earthy, locally foraged mushrooms, surrounded by a moat of slurp-worthy, smoky crab broth. For main courses, the “Walkers” section of the menu offers up Blackened Beef Sliders oozing with melted Gouda sandwiched in diminutive house-made rolls. Condiment cups of sinus-numbing mustard, spice-spiked ketchup and homemade pickles take these burgers over the top. A mini fry-basket makes for a whimsical presentation for the expected side. Craving steak? The Steak Viridian is comprised of three perfectly cooked tournedos of beef on a bed of smashed potatoes loaded with grilled scallions and caramelized cipollini onions. For the less voracious, order up the 8-ounce filet with the V’s Tamarind Steak Sauce, which is fruity, flavorful and very much like classic barbecue sauce. Grilled asparagus is just one of the options among the seven sides offered. The “Swimmers” section of the menu is teaming with fresh Gulf seafood, ranging from Fire-Roasted Tile Fish atop pasta with bits of lobster, tomato and asparagus in a buttery tarragon sauce to a perfectly cooked Cast Iron-Seared Triggerfish on a bed of pea risotto. Meuniere sauce ups the richness factor, but it’s nothing a glass of Russian Hill Pinot Noir can’t cut through. Do save room for dessert. Try the Abita Root Beer Floats or the more decadent Dark Chocolate and Blackberry Beignets. The V does not take reservations, so plan accordingly. Whether you sit indoors or out, every seat boasts a Gulf view and, thanks to forward-thinking developers, always will.
