To me, the design process is like an archive. It is to capture the time, aesthetics, classification of the subject. I would like to classify them by color, time or subject. Therefore, I use this idea in my portfolio to narrative my journey in these years.

[ OBJECTIVE ] To make a book about your a day of life. And using unique styles, ways or senses to keep this visual diary. [ APPROACH ] As a resident living in the Tenderloin, San Francisco. And I want to document a night walk in this area. Many people have prejudice about Tenderloin, that makes me interest in discovering Tenderloin at night. In this project, I use my own black and white photography to capture the real night scene. Combing with the breaking structure graphic elements to depict feeling of walking in the Tenderloin.

[ OBJECTIVE ] To design a poster for a designer who you like. About the exhibition of the designer's works and a lecture. [ APPROACH ] Chip Kidd is one of my favorite graphic designers. I admire his design styles, including collage, comic elements, and retropective style. To mimic the main aesthetics of chip kidd, I use my self, hand-drawing illustration in a poster first. Then using photography of the poster with a retrospectic comic style adjustments and combinations in the poster.

[ OBJECTIVE ] To draw lots a topic, and develop a system design project based on the topic. [ APPROACH ] My topic is wolf. After I do some researches and conceptual development, I want to focus on the interesting relationship between human and wolf. And I decide to create a werewolf museum, which not only collecting the films, documents about werewolf, but the stories of werewolf, the relationship and misunderstanding between human and wolf.

It serves tasty food made of fresh ingredients. COLOR SWATCHES

[ OBJECTIVE ] This is a project to choose a film director and create a film festival. The students are asked to find out a thread, witch is a connection between the selected films. And students have to design a visual system and products based on the thread. [ APPROACH ] I choose Martin Scorsese as my director. "Savage Payback" is the title I choose for the selected four films, which are the best expression of typical violent aesthetic. They are Mean Street (1974), Taxi Driver (1976), Goodfellas (1990), and The Departed (2008). All of my designs are followed the thread: The outcasts of the city living on the fringes confront dangers threatening their survival and take desperate measures to escape destruction and exact revenge. Because all the selected film were set in urban cities, I use the city elements, the textures of urban city as the visual element. And then deconstruct them and make a new composition for the main visual elements of my project.

[ OBJECTIVE ] To choose a dead, defunct and dying brand, revive them a new life. The new direction must follow the brand soul and the original brand essence. Then make a system design. [ APPROACH ] SEGA is a video game development company. However, people only assume SEGA as a home video game company. I want to bring back the brand soul, the enjoy of playing to this creative company. Encourage clients to go outside and apply the spirit in business, management using imagination in playing. To find a new way to play, to love to play again.

[ OBJECTIVE ] To create an experimental typography poster for a song. Try to catch the feeling of the song and express out visually. [ APPROACH ] I pick Teardrop, a song from one of my favorite British bands, Massive Attack. I take photos from projector to catch the movement of fluid water. For me, the gloomy color is a good reflection on the feeling of the song.

[ OBJECTIVE ] Design a money management app for 9-to-12 year old kids and their family. To encourage kids to do saving. [ APPROACH ] Money Monsters is my MFA thesis project.
