Golf Tips from an Experienced Amateur A former Vice Chairman of Morgan Stanley, Bruce Alonso has been an avid golfer for years. Since retiring in April 2005, Mr. Alonso has been able to devote more time to pursuing his favorite sport. We recently sat down with Mr. Alonso to get a few basic golfing tips for novices. Q: What is the first thing that someone new to the sport of golf needs to know? Bruce Alonso: Since the game begins with a tee shot, the new golfer must initially learn how to take a full swing with an iron or driver. The first thing that everyone will tell you is to keep your head down, but there is much more to it than that. You must begin by squaring the clubface with the ball and maintain a smooth body rotation. Take the backswing slowly and accelerate through the downswing. Q: Anything else the novice golfer should keep in mind when approaching the tee? A: The majority of the work necessary to create a successful swing occurs before you even address the ball. Most successful golfers employ a pre-swing routine that begins with locating a target area and choosing the correct club for the distance. Try visualizing your shot, and take several practice swings until you arrive at a stroke that you feel comfortable with. Q: How does the game change as a golfer nears the green? A: Short shots to the green, known as “chip shots” or “pitches,” are among the most challenging aspects of the game to master. Try to choose a club that will allow you to make a three-quarter swing while keeping your head and torso down. Another important thing to remember is to set your front foot square with your target area.
